The power level of going first has completely detered me from playing.
When hand traps are mandatory its a problem because they are random on the first hand. Cards now either have to be randomly drawn on turn 0 or be unrespondable on turn 1 to be playable.
    Thats insane.

I've always said that if they're going to keep Hand Traps and make them compulsory for competitive play then they might as well add Archetype Hand Traps into every Archetype deck. Same with Triple Tactics Thrust, ROTA, Kaijuu, Ghost Ogre, Ash Bollsom etc... Add an Archetype equivalent to every deck which needs it.

I think the biggest problems with modern yugioh are these:
    - Game decisions are compressed into specific game actions in a turn rather than over the course of multiple turns. When game actions get compressed like this, it makes mistakes far more punishing.
    - Cards and game mechanics have weird nuances that are not intuitive (ex: non-targeted effects, chain blocking, how combos link together, etc.)
    - Almost every deck is a combo deck by normal card game metrics. For starters, not everyone enjoys playing combo decks and might prefer other styles of play like aggro or control. Modern Yugioh is built on the core principles of combo and offers little other play experience.
-When every deck operates like this, floodgate effects become too strong, as they offer the only way to prevent nonsense or slow down the game. This makes stun control the only other play style to choose, which is generally seen as un-fun.
    - Cards and current combos are far too overwhelming for new players. This is true for players who have and have not played other cards games before.
Yugioh as a card game would benefit from a revamp or another format(s) that offered different play experiences or made the game easier to onboard newer players.

As a Yu-Gi-Oh player, I started with the release of the Yugi/Kaiba starter decks. I fell in love with the game and played endlessly with friends. I also convinced my mom to take me to the nearest Toys 'R' Us - about half an hour away which was a big commitment for us at the time - so I could play in the Duelist League. For a little 6-7yo me, this was the big leagues. I didn't always do well, in fact I hardly ever did. But one of the only memories I still have of all that time ago playing is sitting across from an older boy (15 or so) and flipping Reinforcements to buff my Red-Eyes for game and him explaining that his attack ends with him taking damage and he would lose on my next turn afterwards. That pride has stuck with me and the compliments he kept giving throughout the game were so formative to my Yu-Gi-Oh experience. Which, I could go off on a whole other rant about men's mental health and how just a simple compliment can change our outlook for years. But I digress, back to my story. My friends moved on from the game, and my mom couldn't keep taking me to the Duelist League after a bit, the time commitment was just too much. So, my cards turned into just a collection. One that I treasured and kept pristine. Then, when I was 12, we were moving to a different state and so many things were sold in a yard sale to lighten the move load. My cards - thousands of first edition Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokémon cards - were sold off for a penny each and the ones left over were thrown away. I cried and cried, the move was already hard enough for me and this on top of it all devastated me. Almost on a subconscious principle, I avoided Yu-Gi-Oh afterwards. Card games as a whole, really. It wasn't until my Junior year in high school that a friend got me into Magic. And from then on, Magic was my card game hobby. But lately, now just over five years out of college, I've been wanting to reconnect with Yu-Gi-Oh. I've gotten into Master Duel and I have been loving it. My first attempt a couple of years ago was a nightmare, but I went in with the wrong expectations. I tried to play modern Yu-Gi-Oh and expected it to be like 2002. Going back to it with the thought of it being an entirely different game has been the difference maker. I grabbed the Swordsoul structure deck from the new player giveaway and I set out to learn the game all over again. And so far, it has been a blast. I've consistently made Platinum III, which may not be too high but puts me into good matchups for my skill level and card pool. But I still have issues...
Master Duel is, at its core, flawed. The tutorial does a good enough job of teaching you the very foundations of the game, but it essentially teaches you how to doggy paddle then pats you on the back and says to swim in the Olympics. And once you overcome that massive learning curve and start to play the game as it is now, you hit the second biggest barrier. Card acquisition. Now, Konami is a business, and profit is obviously their top concern. I understand this. But I feel they could learn from, of all things, Wizards of the Coast. On Magic: Arena, you earn a booster pack's worth of currency daily if you get your 15 wins. And even better, progress for that is tracked in every game mode outside of private games. When I've mentioned this to other Yu-Gi-Oh players in the past, the counterargument for this is that Ranked then has no purpose. It's where Master Duel gives you rewards and if they instead gave them out for Casual then why bother with Ranked? To that, I point once again to Arena. End of season rewards. The current rank-up rewards are good, I enjoy them, and they feel like enough for what they are. But, to continue to encourage ranked play and improvement, wouldn't it also be better to give *more* rewards at the end of the season based on your placement? In Master Duel, when I finish in Platinum, my reward is starting again in Gold with a pat on the back. In Arena, when I finish a season in Platinum, I get three of the most recent booster packs, enough currency to buy one booster pack of my choice, and two alternate arts for cards. If Master Duel followed this same reward principle - give out mission progress in Casual play, give out more and better rewards in Ranked play, and give us better rewards for Daily and even a Weekly mission overall - players will universally have a better experience in the game. And speaking from my own personal experience, when I enjoy a game more, I'm more incentivized to spend money on microtransactions. After all, why would I spend money on something I *don't* like?
Lastly, I feel Master Duel would also benefit from the introduction of additional formats. It has the benefit of being a digital client where various banlists can be enforced automatically and card pools can be cherrypicked much easier than when trying to organize these in paper. Generic formats like Draft and various retro formats are always put forward, and with good reason. I would love to see these get more (or any at all) support and recognition in the one place they can easily get it. But I would also like to put forward a suggestion I don't see be brought up much. Structure Duels. A dedicated queue where you select one of the Structure Decks you own, and it takes you to a deck building screen with the card pool given by the deck and the number of copies you own. Build your deck exclusively with Structure Deck contents and match with other players who are also only playing a single 3x of a Structure Deck. It brings back the feeling of sitting down with friends with decks you bought at Wal-Mart for $20 and going head-to-head. I'm also a big fan of the different Festivals and themed events Master Duel holds, especially when they enforce a limited card pool. A rotating playlist of these events and Festivals that changes, say, weekly or bi-weekly, that players can choose to jump in and out of just to break up the current gameplay loop would be massive for player retention.
I know this is essentially an essay I've typed out, and I fully understand if this doesn't get any attention because of it. But if anyone stuck through and reached here, thank you. For reading this, for giving me your time, and hopefully for responding and sharing your own thoughts and experiences. I continue to engage with Yu-Gi-Oh through Master Duel and through nostalgia emulation with friends, and I am just now starting to collect pieces to go to my LGS and play in Locals. I love this game, I am glad I picked it back up, and I want to see it improve. Cheers, Team APS. Passing the turn back to you.
Edit: I typed this up while listening at work, and to answer your question for us: I don't think it's Indie given the overall property, but outside of the Big Three card games? I really enjoy Marvel Champions as a cooperative living card game. It has a fantastic design space that's open to a lot of personalization, my girlfriend and I both play and enjoy creating our own Marvel OCs to make decks for. A mutual friend of ours got us into it, and together the three of us are always on top of news and new releases for the game. Can't wait to get my hands on Magneto's deck, and while I'm not too excited for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. expansion I am still looking forward to it and whatever comes next!

For me personally, it feels like all modern decks play the same. Once upon a time it felt like all archetypes did something different: Lightsworns milled, Crystal Beats put themselves as spells, Glads shuffled themselves back and forth, Heroes did fusions etc. But now it feels like every deck has a started that searches some cards that allow you to combo up into setting up some negates. It feels like the game loop is the same.
For example I saw people beinf excited about the new "Exodia" deck but like... it's not really an Exodia deck, is it? An Exodia deck aims to assemble all 5 Exodia pieces and win the game that way, the new deck just uses the pieces as combo fodder to go for the same starter -> combo -> set up negates loop that every other deck does.

Certainly true, but part of that comes from the death of the anime. So many of the unique archetypes originated in anime themes where the primary goal was to be fun to watch, and there wasn't much pressure to set a high power level because people were going to buy Crystal Beasts regardless of how playable they were. With no anime, there's less of a push to design wacky playstyles, and there's more need to make archetypes powerful because the "you saw it in the anime, now buy it" angle is gone.

I think sooner or later people realize the game design has been getting more and more toxic over time, at least I did because I havent been playing for 10+ years. Every game in Yu-gi-oh is a non game for someone. Card games are luck based enough as it is to be able to draw cards to play the game. Hand traps and traps with the power they all have now make the game even more luck based. DId you draw Shifter against a deck that needs the grave? automatic win. Did you draw fuwaros against a deck that needs to summon a lot? automatic win. Droll against a deck that needs to search? automatic win. Are you even playing a game at that point or are you just trying to stop your opponent from doing anything. Also the cards cost way too much for a game with trash prizing other than case tourneys. Its just too toxic at the end of the day. I switched to pokemon where there are no Hand Traps but deck building is still relevant. Ive won games i thought i was going to lose in the beginning because you cant just steam roll and win on the first turn. Not all the time at least there are options and plays to let you win fast and in cheap ways like in yugioh but its not every game like yugioh.

I got into yugioh when master duel came out, and I was HEAVILY invested in the game. What pushed me out was the fact that newer decks keep coming out being more powerful than the previous deck. I didn't wanna keep buying the next meta just to stay relevant in tournaments, but it was also disheartening to see my decks (EX: Labrynth and Vanquish Soul) slowly become weaker simply to power creep. Also, I was getting fatigued every time a new set came out because I would then basically have to take a test on all the new cards and their effects. I'm into Warhammer 40k now

  • @lifequality
    @lifequality 22 дні тому +8

I always bring up 2 reasons why I quit:
Yugioh fails to be a game that is only complex and not complicated. But it has become complex AND complicated. And the best games in human history are often designed in a way where you understand the fundamentals very fast because they are easy to learn. And then you are introduced to deeper strategies rendering the games much more complex while not being complicated to learn initially.
Yugioh had this around the time before pendulums but just gradually lost it while become more and more crazy. And not only in a good sense. It’s just unbalanced and messy these days. And card pools arent balanced.
    2. Konami is just way to greedy while not caring enough to also deliver a great balanced product. I know Yugitubers tend to protect Konami because their business relations might be at risk; but Konami really is that bad of a company when it comes to customer needs. They frankly dont care and it shows in short printed secret rare staples, it shows in unbalanced tier 0 formats that occur more and more often. It shows on every front.
These 2 things alson are already enough.
But then; there are even other points that just make it even worse. (F.ex OCG and TCG marketing differences).

Lots of good points, nice video. One thing that comes to mind is when Paul said how he thought nearly all cards released prior to 2022 could be released from the ban list, because more modern archetypes/decks since then aren't so affected by them (like cards that allow you to draw cards), however, the main issue with those being unbanned is that they would also help make the most oppressive decks even more consistent/powerful, kind of like hand traps and similar cards have done. :/
(I too am on a hiatus, but I plan on returning at some point, when I get the itch again....)

For the issue with Tins being a good product or not, it's purely on Konami for ruining them in the first place. Why get rid of promos, and intentionally bloat the set list and cram all chase cards into secret slots so it's harder to pull? On top of that, they reprinted the bonanza IMMEDIATELY after so Tins lose any sliver of remaining value. If you look at the OCG, OCG sealed products have a lot of other stuff like sleeves, dice and whatnot. I don't know who's in charge of doing Konami product designs, but they need to really improve.

I will always say that the over powered extra deck monsters being generic enough to fit in a lot of decks is what ruins yugioh. We need more specific summoning requirements that keep extra deck monsters in their respective archetype. Ex, apollusa, chaos angel, baronne de fluer, and borrelload savage need errata’s to require in archetype materials to summon (ex: savage requiring a rocket dragon as material). It’s too much when my opponent has multiple of those negating beat sticks on the field at a time with a main deck that’s not even related to any of those cards

I think y'all are missing the point of the question about ownership and collectibles. I think you hyper focused on the idea of owning property as in land or a home, but the question to me sounded a lot more about how we don't own *anything* nowadays.
How do you get your music? Do you have an expansive CD collection or do you use Spotify?
Do you have a substantial library of books or do you maybe use an e-reader or listen to audiobooks?
When you buy a game on Steam, where's the physical CD for the game so that you can play it even if something went to hell with the platform?
If you do still have CDs or DVDs, what do you use them on? Computers don't come with disc drives most of the time, consoles are now coming as digital only options being pushed at you, and people don't really buy Blu-ray players or DVD players anymore.
I think *that's* more what the question was about. Year by year we own less and less and instead we borrow or license it from a big company. I don't have to buy a license for the Gundam kit that I build and put on my shelf, and I don't have to keep an Internet connection active to look at the art I have on my wall, I can wear a t shirt with a cool print of Mario without having to subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online.
When more and more of what we pay for we'll never touch or be able to truly say we "own," people will gravitate toward things they can confidently say is theirs (even moreso for the cool things we love).

My brother and I still play casually from time to time; been off and on since we were kids. The thing both of us hear consistently is that pendulums and Link cards were where most of us dropped off.
In my case, it was like “ok, synchros are just fusions. Got it.” “Xyz, just like Synchros. Got it.” “Pendulums; my opponent plays 8 cards on turn 1 and wins… I’m out.”
My brother is a little more forgiving; he argues that power creep ebbed and flowed between the different stages of the anime, original, gx, 5d’s, etc. but everyone he talks to says they had a similar experience to me and that was where they stopped too.

Pendulum player here ✋🏾 I’ve tried other card games but yugioh just feels the best and most natural for me. Learning a new deck or new combos isn’t always easy but it feels so rewarding when you nail it and then experimenting with the deck, changing the builds, putting cards in, taking cards out; changing the lines of play you can take and creating a completely different board with the same or similar cards in the main/extra deck is the most cathartic experience for me. Learning how to play around problem decks/cards or how your deck can be punished by various counters is a great learning experience and puts what you have in perspective versus the many different decks that exist in the game. I also only play on Master Duel because the convenience of being able to see all my cards, build a deck or just load in a game at the touch of a button just feels good; also learning how pendulum, which is my favorite summoning mechanic by far, isn’t even at full power in tcg/ocg just keeps me drawn to Master Duel.

I think a Elite Trainer kit could be good for yugioh players that buy at retail stores because if they go off pokemon then you'll get 10-11 packs in the box plus sleeves. A yearly Trainer Kit could also be a good introduction product, print common versions of the common staple cards and some of the more popular engine cards like Azamina, Fiend Smith, and Keshtier, doing this would give new players easy access to these popular cards and engines while still protecting the value of the higher rarity version's of the cards since everything in the box would be a common.

This will sound like an extreme change, but Yu-gi-oh needs keywords to reduce that card text. A lot of the cards seem to have repeated text that is highly redundant, like mentioning once per turn, cards except "name of the card" and can't be special summon or set...except in a specific way.
If you keyworded summoning conditions, use a symbol or overall game rule that states unique effects are once per turn unless otherwise stated, etc.
Perhaps text it out in a digital environment like Master Duel and see how it plays out. No harm is done if it doesn't work.
A few symbols and keywords to keep the game digestible would go a long way. No, I don't have an answer for every possible card effect, but all the repeated typical text on cards can be reduced significantly.

I just re-picked up YuGiOh after MANY years of not playing. I’m talking when Infernal Flame Emperor came out.
I have to say that I do love the modern format. HOWEVER, I do not like how quickly the meta changes. It can take me around 1-2 months to research, play test, and physically build a deck and then a new set will come out and more than likely changes the meta. How do you combat or work around this?

    • @CaptainMarvel4Ever
      @CaptainMarvel4Ever 14 днів тому +1

I mainly just do one deck. I'll build other decks if I think they're fun, but for the most part I just try and improve my Ancient Gear deck and prep it for every format. Maybe if a meta deck is cool I get into it, but no mater how invested or uninvested I am, I just come back to Ancient Gears, a deck I know and know how to pilot well and I'm right at home. Maybe if I've been away for a bit I fall on my face, but once ya figure out the meta you slide back in.
Helps a lot if you're favorite deck got specific support some point after 2021.

I mean I think that's the joy of Yu-Gi-Oh. No matter who you are there's a deck for you. My advice is to go to Master Duel meta and look through the list of secret packs, because those packs usually have most of the cards and strategies you need within them. Then it's just a mater of what deck you think is cool and resonates with you that you can play well. Who knows, maybe your deck hasn't even been released yet and one day you'll see an archetype that just speaks to you.
Good news is Konami is at least spreading the love and giving just about every deck broken cards. Heck look at Genex and Jurrac, they were so bad Konami said screw it and gave them cards that would make any other archetype tier 0. So more and more we're seeing most decks get the tools they need to play well.

For indie card games, I've been playing a lot of Force of Will. It's a game known for great art but it's sad to see them cut corners in that front because when the art is good, it's REAL good. I feel like I can't show it to people until they revamp their presentation (a 4th time).

I’ve noticed that most yugi tubers are doing legacy style matches (goat, Edison, battle city) and the community love its. I think if you removed links from the game and harped down on the ban list a little more you’d probably regain a ton of interest. A lot of these meta decks require link extenders

In a game that sold us on the range of creativity and back and forth play...
The game starts with how much time and money you can dump into it (the more the better). You now have to choose from a very small handful of decks that look like robots, waifus, and/or dragons, with the options being whatever anyone else is playing. The game plan is now "whatever you draw, go through 20 cards on your first turn and another 5 (that are almost identical) on your opponents, for the goal of making them play as close to zero cards as possible. Do it long enough for your opponent to take a bathroom break. If they somehow play through it... Then if your deck is one of those that can just do it all over again, cool. Either way, someone effectively OTKs. Wait for a banlist or new releases that are more about profit than balancing, and then do it all again ad nauseum.

As far as modern stuff, and not liking to make modern yugioh content, i think theres value in showing your modern favorites like voiceless voice and such, wether its a handful of duels or a ladder or something
i think a lot of us who watch enjoy the excitement you have for the yugioh you enjoy
Some of my favorites are when you use those decks, like when you won you swapped deck, those were really fun videos

Speaking on "indi" card games. I carry two decks of Yomi in my deck box to play in between rounds at locals. Everyone I've shown it to has loved it. Its not a TCG, each deck is a purchasable product.
Edit: Okay after watching more of the video and learning you guys both like fighting games, Yomi is a fighting game simulator. Both players place a card facedown at the same time and reveal it. Its a rock paper scissors type game with "Grab", "Attack", and "Block". From there, you're allowed to add cards from your hand that "combo" from the landed hit.
Its really fun. $20 buy in, I say it deserves an episode :)

My favorite indie card game is Varia. It's like Flesh and Blood, but you can make your own characters, and you don't have to play the resource management mini-game every time you want to play a card. You just get a flat 10 action points per turn.
Also, the difference between "your turn" and "my turn" is just who plays cards first. Each turn feels interesting because you aren't just blocking or avoiding your opponent's attacks, you can actually counter-attack.
Finally, it's an XCG instead of a TCG. If you want X card, you just need to find out which deck it comes in and buy the deck. Worst case scenario is that you want a playset of a card that is a one-of in a deck and you have to buy 3 of those decks. Decks are less than $20 and you can get a whole season of 8 characters for $100. The decks are very playable and competitive with each other, out of the box.

"What Really Pushes Players Out of Modern Yu-Gi-Oh?"
repetition, the inability to play and the barrier-to-entry that is learning the meta card pool when it comes to staples and how grating it is to see the same exact scenarios nearly every game (on both sides) regardless of the deck people are playing. When people play a game, they want to see the dynamic possibilities of the variety of gameplay so they can find what appeals to them and what to prepare for but yugioh, as a lifelong player, it very difficult to want to show to people who are unfamiliar because of the gamestate its standardized to be what the game revolves around. There isn't so much of a game to learn anymore as much as there is a study guide of what you're going to have to deal with that you can't prepare for and how much of the game relies on knowing exactly what moment you should ash what card on to get any advantage- but they had a called by, oh well, you lose.

As an old-school yugioh player who was immediately turned off by the XYZ and Synchro meta games, it really just seems like the game has become too complicated which is fine for hardcore players who want to go down that route but excludes casuals (most people). I would love to have a format that only allows cards up through the GX era.

I personally have a Love&Hate relationship with Yugioh specifically speaking on Master Duel and I’m also speaking as a casual player as well 😅
The cards that are damn near impervious to effects or have multiple negates (Dragon Master Magia for example) is an instant fun killer for me. Might be fun for my opponents what but fun is it to have to surrender when your deck is basically locked?
Konami needs to make it to where you get rewarded for going into casual and dueling there instead of ranked being the main priority when there aren’t events as well for the casual people who want to try out their new deck combos and not get recked in rank or have to play The Absolute Monarch everytime to get your strategy down

Kudos for the Mob Psycho 100 recommendation! One of the best. That's one of mine and I'll include Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Vinland Saga. FMAB is 64 episodes but it's a complete story and has so many great characters and an interesting story that kinda reminds me of Avatar in it's structure. Vinland Saga isn't finished but the 2 seasons it has are brilliant. The overall theme is growing and becoming a good person. And this is shown through Thorfinn who grows up with hatred in his heart but has to overcome that. And the only other thing I can say is it has such standout characters. Since y'all said Mob Psycho, I'll throw in another one: Spy x Family. It's got around the same number of episodes right now as Mob and is still going but is just wholesome fun. The 3 MCs are fantastic and the goofy situations with high, yet somehow low, stakes is just great.
I've actually made a list recently of 7 Anime for Non-Anime fans and those 4 shows are on it along with Cowboy Bebop, Death Note and Demon Slayer. First two are classics while Demon Slayer is like the original Star Wars movie. Just good fun and action! (The animation in the fights is also god tier)
