- This informational video was filmed on October 20th to show the road conditions on Shumont Road in Black Mountain, NC, south on Hwy 9. There are a handful spots with significant road damage due to slides, but there is at least one lane or shoulder open so that it can be driven all the way to it's end.
Thank you so much. I been wanting to go up there. My Great Grand parents lived on Bald mountain Church road. That had the last place on the right before you get to the Church. It is still today one of my favorite places in the world. i have stayed away because I do not want to be in the way. We have been sending merchandise to the flood area. I live around 20 to 25 miles from where the flooded areas start.
Thanks for doing this! Scarry drive up the mountain!
You're welcome. I hope you were able to see what you needed before you head back this way. Some of those spots are pretty precarious, but I felt comfortable driving over in a full-sized pickup (2500 HD). It's tough to say how much rain it would it would take to further erode some of those spots so that they're impassable. Probably not too much.
I’ve ridden that road several times by bike…brutal climb and precarious downhill, but worth it for the beautiful scenery.
Rhododendron is usually on north facing slopes, not necessarily by altitude.
I never have cell service when I’m hiking or run into these Rhododendron patches- and then forget to look it up later. Thanks for the info!!
How far from stone mountain
I'm not familiar with a Stone Mountain in that area. The Stone Mountain near Boone is 100 miles away. Is there a mountain locally know with that name on Hwy 9 South?
There was a tornado
At the top of the road, where the horse barn is?
