  • Recording acoustic guitar; comparisons between piezo electric, internal microphone, dynamic microphone (SM57) and condenser mic (Oktavia MK-012). There's lots of recording tips and tricks of the trade here, I have loads of experience recording guitars, having worked as a session guitarist for the last 20 years. All of the guitar playing is just me messing about, improvising, I tried to keep the ideas in a similar vibe so that we could compare the sound of the different microphones more clearly. All recorded at my studio:

      @@davespeakmanmusic Not a problem. I haven't looked so forgive me if you've already got one, but possible a video on mic placement when recording. And also, in addition to this, how to manipulate the audio on a DAW to make it sound great (i.e. using eq, reverb, echo, etc.). Cheers!

    I'm doing research right now trying to put together a home recording studio. this video is very helpful. thanks for posting it.
    My band is a duet. most our songs involve guitar, piano (upright), and two vocalist. would really like to record full run threws with everything going all at once instead of piecing parts together. is that a good idea?
    I have a nice computer and instruments but currently have 0 recording gear. thinking about getting a Zoom H8 and a bunch of SM57s. plan is to use the unidirectional mics that come with the zoom H8 for recording the piano, then use the SM57s to record everything else. whatcha think of this plan? I dont mind spending more on mics I just keep seeing sm57s come up in my research.
    I liked and subbed. again really nice video.

      Recording everything live at the same time is great and usually yields the best performance. I would look at some small diaphragm condenser microphones for recording your piano (Oktava mk012 or Neumann km184 depending on your budget). I’d look at a nice live vocal microphone for the singer - something that will keep spill out. I really like the sennheiser 935 for live vocals. You could consider a Shure SM7b for this too. For the acoustic guitar I’d probably go with another small diaphragm condenser - might be better to keep the acoustic in mono.

      @@davespeakmanmusic thank you for the fast and thoughtful response. I did like sound of the oktava mk-012 in your video slightly more than the sm57. I really appreciate all the advice your savin me a bunch of time.
      any suggestion on a DAW? I'd say im decent at picking up soft wear programs.

    • @davespeakmanmusic
      @davespeakmanmusic  3 роки тому

      No problem. I think I would start with one of the free DAWs and use it until you need facilities that you have to pay for. If you’re on Mac - I’d just use GarageBand on PC either Reaper, Ableton Lite or Protools First. Maybe watch a few videos about the workflow in each bit of software. They all do the same thing and sound identical (providing you’re using the same plugins). Are you on Mac or PC?

      @@davespeakmanmusic I'm on PC. Thank you for the suggestions. I'll give those programs a look. I'm pretty decent with Photoshop, illustrator, and MuseScore so hopefully those skill will translate some what.

    Hi
    Great video and very good examples!

    What can you say about EQ before interface? Is it worth?

      @davespeakmanmusic  3 роки тому

    • @florindinu4348

      @@davespeakmanmusic yes. Let's say Mic-preamp-eq-(maybe compressor)-interface

    • @davespeakmanmusic
      @davespeakmanmusic  3 роки тому

      Yes, I like to do that. I also really like recording parallel compression while tracking (especially when recording drums). I think in many cases, when recording guitars, choosing the right microphones for the sound you want and using the right sounding guitar is the way to go. If you can add a little polish with some EQ, then great. I don’t cut much when recording - I tend to boost (probably only 1 to 2 dB max). I nearly always compress vocals and bass guitar on the way in and sometimes EQ, if it sounds like it needs it. 😀

    I am using a large condenser and a dynamic at the same time, to give a little more woody sound.
    I have them placed in the same position, 12th fretboard, as I'm not looking for stereo image, but for more beefy balanced sound.
    In this case, is it necessary to have the compressors linked in stereo?
    Thanks

    • @davespeakmanmusic
      @davespeakmanmusic  3 роки тому +1

      I think I would as otherwise, the phase will be shifting if one of your compressors triggers and the other doesn’t.
