  • In this video we'll balance the equation S + HNO3 = H2SO4 + NO2 + H2O . Visit www.Breslyn.org for video guides on balancing equations and more!
To balance S + HNO3 = H2SO4 + NO2 + H2O you'll need to be sure to count all of atoms on each side of the chemical equation.
Once you know how many of each type of atom you can only change the coefficients (the numbers in front of atoms or compounds) to balance the equation for Sulfur + Nitric acid.
Important tips for balancing chemical equations:
Only change the numbers in front of compounds (the coefficients).
Never change the numbers after atoms (the subscripts).
The number of each atom on both sides of the equation must be the same for the equation to be balanced.

It's better to assume coefficients of reactants & products as a, b,c,d,e. Balancing means all atoms must be equal in both sides.
Now solve a,b,c,d,e by writing equations.
    For S: a=c
    For N: b=d
    For H: b=2c + 2e
    For O: 3b=4c+2d+e
Now assume any one as 1 & solve remaing by using these equations. For simplicity assume a or b =1.
    If a=1 then c =1. Now solve b,d & e.
    U will get b=d= 6, e= 2

At 1:30, how did you come up with the coefficient of 2 for H2O? Just random? Instinct?

    • @neetubawa4233
      @neetubawa4233 4 роки тому +2

Bcoz number of O2 on reactant side is even and if it would be multiplied to any of the numbers the result will also be an even number,
But on product side we r having sum = odd number and which need to be converted into an even one so as to ensure a balanced equation, only 1 O atom in H2O need to be converted into even O's (bcoz other are already even but this one is not and hence causing a prblm)
Therefore we will just multiply it by smallest even no. 2 to proceed further for balancing.
