This was so significant and wildly relevant to the franchise; as a turning point for Gale Weathers. She had been callous to what Sidney was experiencing, and had taken every opportunity to profit from her misery. All behind the premise of Sidney mis-identifying Cotton as her Maureen's killer. This was so powerful because after seeing her loved one murdered and being made to feel absolutely helpless she automatically assumed Cotton as a killer the moment she saw him. She's a journalist for Christ sake and didn't have a shred of evidence other than him being there by coincidence. It's wonderfully written because from here on out she checks herself on her egoic bullshit, and remembers what it was like to be the helpless victim.
Well, there IS the fact that his hands were literally drenched in Dewey's blood and she had just WITNESSED the killer murder her love. What else was she supposed to think BUT that he was the killer.
