Control & Alan Wake Explained - What is the Dark Place? (Spoilers)

- Hello everyone & welcome back to the latest video in my attempts to explain the Remedy Universe. In today's Video we will bring the two games together and discuss Control & Alan Wake in the same breath.
The story of Control makes reference to various other Thresholds of Reality within the narrative. There is, however, one Threshold that is not shown and only briefly alluded to within that game. That is the Threshold that is the centerpoint of Alan Wake, The Dark Place.
Using the symbolism present in Cauldron Lake and the Spiral Door, this video will attempt to explain the relationship between The Dark Place, and the world that Control built. In the end, What is the Dark Place?

There's another threshold in the house presumably into the lake. Arish says They use the water for something, but never drink it.
I remember something about that. I'll have to go take a look. If it's the same lake then it's a good thing lol. That's what the brothers used to make their moonshine and caused their visions.

@@piratetv1 Well, the water is from the *Threshold* that the *Clog* comes from, so I suspect that it’s not safe for human consumption simply because it’s highly contaminated.
Never played Alan wake, but this is a brilliant theory. Ten out of ten deep dive in to the world building.
I definately recommend checking it out! That game is incredible and was my first entry into the madness that is Remedy.
What really made me think about this was how the landscape of the foundation shifted from a forest, to an ocean, and others when Jesse first arrived. Reality there felt malleable kind of like the Dark Place.

Honestly, AW inspired me on so many levels. This game and Joe Campbell's Hero with 1,000 Faces is what made me love literature.
I just did some more digging into what Ahti says when Jesse disturbs his vacation. Roughly " avenged the Swedish brothers for decent steam."
Tor and Odin were just in Ahti's sauna and couldn't handle it. They just gave him the tape for Jesse. I don't think she caught who it was until she listened but she's known old gods music since she was 9
Interesting. Was he speaking in finnish when he made that comment? I dont recall this. If so that's very interesting. Last time we saw them was I think 2012 and Barry was restarting their career.

Once i figured out that because of the font, the translator was turning i into L, i got better results.

Thank you for finding this. It really makes me wonder what the Old Gods have been up to since they had their comeback tour.
I swear your channel has become one of my faves over the last month, such rich content and amazing theories on deep stories and criminally underrated games. I honestly can't believe no one before you has done this since all of Remedy's games have so much world building content, lore and many philosophical themes attached to them. I especially love your take on the water symbolism and how it ties into dimensional planes of existence with the Cosmic Ocean. It's something I've also thought about and another reason why I think it's viable the Remedyverse can one day be fully connected due to the Ocean View motel being a nexus which leads to different planes of existence, we just need Remedy to get the rights for all their titles so it can happen haha. As always looking forward to the next video!

Yeah the legal issues with IP always get in the way of good storytelling. Look at Sony and Disney right now. I am barely into Max Payne for the first time but I can imagine a story where Max is pulled from the book reality into this world or Shifter's make an appearance. I wonder how Jack and Martin Hatch would fit in to this story.
I just found something.. on the chalkboard in Quantum Break, there's actually a spiral on it, explaining it "going into the depths", so like a whirlpool. Also, it talks about how most of universe is made up of dark matter, the Dark Presence. I also found interesting as it mentions that the shoe box is the thing that can resist alteration or something of the matter.
Anyways, I just knew you were talking about the Spiral, so though I'd bring it up.
Absolutely! That black board basically gives us a roadmap of what Remedy plans for the next Alan wake story. The most intriguing thing for me, at least in the shirt term, is in the bottom left. Where it says AWE it says ot stands for Altered World Events but also Alan Wake Experience. The next dlc is called AWE...I wonder of it is a subtitle for Alan Wake Experience.

It basically just confirms it, so Jesse will "experience" something Alan Wake-y and Dark Presence-ish is some shape or form (if they bring the Taken in Control, I WILL DIE.. In the game countless more times...) The black... BOARD, oh crap, that too haha
But the black board gives so much context that I think it helps out the game when it came with the downloadable Alan Wake game with Quantum Break

Based upon the promotional art Remedy released I think you may get your wish. I am beyond excited to see what happens!
Let's take for a moment how the mechanics of the game works: even for the DLC The Foundation, the game used the same map mechanics and all the action is located in a new sector, which is the Foundation. The same goes with this DLC, which I read is also gonna happen in a new sector: The Investigation Sector. This sector seems to be the one studying the AWEs, and I'm guessing that it will be some kind of multiple labs analyzing the stable thresholds, or the ones they can merely control (like the panopticon for the Altered Items). The thing is that the main story doesn't mention this sector at all, so I'm assuming the story of the DLC will start with some NPC telling you that something weird is happening there and they require your assistance. At this point several things may happen, but I guess that a new threshold may appear in this sector and it gets you into the OceanView Motel, resolve a puzzle and strangely enough, openning the Spiral door, which would really confuse Jesse. Where this door may lead you is unknown, but is the only possible connection with Alan Wake. I don't see another way of seeing physically Alan Wake, if we even get to see him and not some kind of spiritual voice in Jesse's mind. Probably, the Bright Falls AWE is reapeating again and Alan is looking for the chance of getting out of here once and for all.
I think it may have been Emily who Hypothesized that in order for th Door to be unlocked in the Oceanview we must have entered through it at one point. This would mean Jesse would have to enter The Dark Place from another entrance before that door will open. At least if we believe her hypothesis. One big thing I am curious about is if any additional slides are found in the Ordinary Dump Site. Each one of the slides opens up to a new threshold. It would be fun to literally hop through these Slide Projections and explore. Maybe one of them leads to the Dark Place.
@@GamingUniversityUoG didn't remember that from Emily, you are right. I don't know which place could be the first entry, assuming we play inside the sector because of the lockdown. And the slides seemed to be burned, but was because of this that the Hiss was released (because of the burned one from Trench). So you may be right, but where are the burned slides?
I mean, the most probable thing is that they were in Dimensional Research along with the slide projector, but nothing were found.
Are you some kind of future-telling wizard? Your thoughts about the AWE-DLC are spot on.

Personally I was very very very excited when I jumped down into the darkest part of the foundation, and had to fight my way out using light. I feel like this was a direct reference to how the AWE DLC is going to play out while you fight the darkness in the investigations sector.
You know I didn't even think about that side quest when I made this. Now that you mention it being forced to use the TV or Lamp as a light source to navigate did bring back AW vibes. The deeper you go into the Foundation the Darker it gets!
the spiral symbol make me think about the lighthouse and the scene when alan enters it, the shadow of stairs and the light of lighthouse is very similar to it therefore maybe it is actually the center of this threshold
The lighthouse will definately feature in the next alan wake video. And yes spiral staircase symbolism is a huge thing in literature. Spiritual development as one ascends or going up and down the stream of consciousness.
Much like Fantastica in the Neverending Story, I doubt the Dark Place has an exact center. Unless we say within an infinite place wherever you are at is always the center.
I feel the lighthouse was a creation of Alan since it plays in his literature a lot. In Alan's short story, Errand Boy, the climax of the story took place in a lighthouse much like the one seen in his nightmare.
Its awesome that Ahti and the Andersons are friends. Coolest characters in the universe.
Agreed! The Andersons have always been my favorites. Maybe I'm biased a bit since I'm a musician too.
I also think not any artist can activate the dark place as far as we know only Thomas Zane, Tor/ Odin Anderson, and Allen Wake have done it. All of them para-utilitarians
I think the jury is still out whether or not Jake Fischer actually made any changes. Dr. Hartman suspected he may have given he immediately invited him to stay at the lodge. As far as I know Emerson, Lane, and Desole never did anything.
@@GamingUniversityUoG The artist who drew the Taken (Rudolf Lane) may have - he only started getting the visions when Wake showed up. Coupled with the fact that there isn't a massive slew of missing people and that some Taken come out of the ground (like in final chapter) it may be that he was touched by darkness like Rose and made to draw Taken for the Dark Presence. That isn't counting the named Taken like Rusty and Stucky. Just a theory.

Awesome video. Love the idea that the Dark Place is a seed and the Oldest House a "Tree". I'm replaying Alan Wake right now and noticed this detail from a tree nicknamed "The Great Old One": "Felled by lighting in 1937, this exceptionally tall Rocky Mountain Douglas Fir... was over 200 years old. According to local legends, it stretched beyond the stars."
I remember looking at that tree in the game. And the other important tree called The Witch's Ladle can be seen on a billboard when you're heading back to Cauldron Lake on the first game.
My god the quality of your videos are god tier. So much effort put into these videos I have been binge watching your videos and man let remedy blow up and your channel's growth is inevitable.

Water has always been used as a metaphor for other worlds/realms. The lovecraftian nature of the remedyverse is awesome. So many links. My favourite being the hotline. In lovecraftian lore. The other realm is there is just we don't have the insight to see it. However, if we did. We would go mad. Reminds me of how people die when they pick up the hotline. They don't have the brain capable of comprehending this other realm.

I think the only new thing I would add in is the relationship between Time and the dark place . But that's what the new vid was for.
When I first saw the spiral door in Control I was instantly reminded of the tree from Alan Wake (the one that was blown apart , in the nature hike trailer in Episode 2 I think)
There was another one I think in episode 3 that was knocked down during the 70s by a lightening strike. I remember reading in Alan Wake Illuminated that the tree was intended to have be blasted by Tor Anderson.
@@GamingUniversityUoG I just clicked with the swirl . Thanks for reminding me , I just found it was a key moment that kinda stuck out for me in Alan Wake . When I saw the swirl and hearing about Alan Wake and Control being connected my instant thought was swirl door and Alan Wake's world .
Another door the one opposite the swirl with the nailed C if I remember rightly had a foreboding feel to it .

Just noticed something...maybe nothing. But look at that picture you posted from Alan Wake at 4:50. The reflection in the lake doesn't really look like the mountain on the shore it's reflecting, but rather an inverted black pyramid. Maybe nothing but it caught my eye.

This was great. And to top it off the end of the video sounded a lot more like a conspiracy than a statement/question that usually end them.
Yeah for this one I didn't feel like we had a definitive answer so I wanted to make sure it was a question or tin foil hat theory for the last bit.
your channel should grow man. it's like the vaatividya of remedy series. i was so engaged with the from software games from dark souls to bloodborne to sekiro. and it is also vague in its storytelling, hiding lores and backstories behind item descriptions to dialogues. i was immersed with that, and now this ♥️
I absolutely love what I call, 'Archeology style storytelling' where the player/reader has to spend time digging under the surface to get a closer understanding. It makes it a lot of fun to immerse oneself into the world.
Personally, I've only played Bloodborne in the Soulsborne series and I know I missed a lot of information. One of these days I may get back to it when I have time.
@@GamingUniversityUoG oh you will be amazed with how much you may have missed. the lore actually "hidden" or left up to the player to decipher is immensely vast across all of the games. i would also suggest playing other titles. you may even cover their lores. I'm sure you'd find something or come up with theories which many never thought of before.
Just the fact i even wanna watch a lore video so i understand control better is really a testament to how great that game is. I have only ever watched lore videos for bloodborne and dark souls 3 before this but without having played alan wake I was curious to know what the back story was so I am not lost in the awe expansion. Yeah I knew a lot of Control fans may not have played the previous games so I tried to get some stuff up to fill in the blanks! Alan Wake was my first Remedy game so it has a place in my heart.

I remember seeing quiet a bit as well. I'll have to replay to find then all. We do know the dark presence likes using a tornado. Interesting though.

So happy you are doing these. Like others have said, nobody seems to be covering the Remedyverse Lore/Mythology. Which is insane because it's literally begging to be dissected. So thank you for the great analyses. I finished CONTROL when it came out. I just yesterday finished Alan Wake for the first time, but have yet to play American Nightmare. Around 2:40 you say, "When Alan first arrives in a version of Night Springs..." is that a misread and is actually supposed to be "a version of Bright Falls"?

I'd definately say play the Writer/Dignal dlc as well as American Nightmare. And to answer your question, no it was not a mistake when i mentioned Night Springs. It was very much intentional!

The spiral in Alan Wake 2 makes so much sense now. Been watching Oxhorn's playthrough of Control from 3 yrs ago and immediately recognized the Spiral on the door in the Oceanview Motel.
My new favorite cliffhanger line [redacted]. Gah I love Remedy's games and storytelling.

Mr scratch must represent the scratched out portions of Alans works. My main source is the letter found by the fbc that came under the door at the ocean view motel. "The scratched out portion reads" and the writing becomes pretty erratic.
I just remember a cutscence with the Dark Presence. Alan is remembering him becoming The Dark Presence's writer. Right at the end of the Flashbask, the Dark Presence jumpscares us, shouting "YOU". This could mean several things. The Dark Presence can see future Alan Wake in a flashback, or getting Meta, the Dark Dream of the Ocean can see the Anomaly that is the Player.
It really depends on whether we think Alan travelled back in time during that drunken night. I always looked at the scene as the moonshine allowing him to remember in a dream. In his subconscious he always knew what happened but this let him see the memory that was gone for whatever reason. I believe that the camera was the mind of present day Alan looking in. Much like we can see ourselves in dreams. This is who the Dark Presence addressed. What that means is up for discussion. Could be a lot of things.
"In one dream, a writer wrote about a cop.' In another, the cop was real."

I honestly have no clue. I wonder about that myself. The symbolism works perfectly but we can never know without interviewing the writers about what they originally intended. It is a rorscharch test. I may be projecting some of my thoughts on it. Who can say.

Hey wasn't expecting a video so soon after your previous video about Former! I definitely think that the AWE DLC is basically going to be one big setup for Alan Wake 2, probably having a cliffhanger ending with the spiral door opening... hopefully we get to see Alan again after all these years. Do you think the Dark Presence and the Hiss are related?
I've been really pushing myself to work on this YT project more frequently. Remember back when I started it took 4-6 weeks between videos lol.
To answer your question I don't know but I lean towards them being unrelated. The Dark Presence always seemed like the Shadow Archetype of the Collective Unconscious to me. The Hiss give me a 4th dimensional resonance vibe. I'll have a video on both eventually. Oddly enough I find The Hiss more similar to Shifters for reasons I'll explain later.
Reminds me of Outer Wilds' take on quantum objects existing in all possible states at once, until a conscious observer locks them into one state by observing them. They take this idea to the extreme, likening the big bang to an entire universe of possibilities condensed to a single point when observed.

Low-key 4:03 Cynthia Weaver was the other incident of the bright falls AWE in 1978
All of them happened in pairs.
(1970) Thomas Zane and Barbara. Thomas had to rescue Barbara, while Barbara had a Shadow double which kills the real her. (Thomas failed saving Barbara from the Shadow. Hence why he couldn't return.)
(1976) Odin and Tor Anderson. Tor had to rescue Odin, while Odin had a Shadow double. Tor was successful in returning with his brother from the dark place. (I believe that's how berry found out about the Christmas lights working. He learned it from Tor when he used fireworks.)
(1978) Cynthia Weaver and ?. Clearly she lost someone to the dark place hence why she was so scared of the dark. She spoke of someone wanting to kill her, a Shadow double of a familiar face. She never identifys who she lost though. But she probably never got that person back hence why she goes back and forward into the dark place.
(2010) Alan wake and Alice wake. Alice was successfully rescued from the dark place while Alan had a Shadow double. Which I think is weird, I believe Alan didn't conduct the ritual correctly, hence why he's stuck in the dark place with his Shadow double. But lucky for Alan, he's a parautilitarians who can use altered items.

Seeing the breakdown of the story, mentions of Campbell's Monomyth, comparisons of Dark Matter to the human Unconscious Mind. The topic of Dark Matter leads to a discussion of Baryonic vs Non-Baryonic particles. Its fascinating!
Man it's astonishing how the get to merge philosophy and science to such levels of deepness. I truly love this studio.
Lore wise, I got particularly blown away by the spiral sign in the board, like they had these symbols and little, "key” elements established for years. I mean, the way they have been building up their mythos is really admirable.
Btw: apologise in advance if I seem vague. I am still learning the language.
Sam has stated that a lot of ideas for the Alan Wake 2 that was in preproduction ended up going in to Quantum Break. So I knew there was a lot of info on that board that was intended to be part of Alan's Sequel.

Hey man, why don't make a explain video for Polaris or hedron as it's called? How come it is the guide of Jesse but also the source of resonance in slide 36 and the way the hiss attacked our dimension? So what is Hedron? Or polaris?
Also, why did hiss destroy hedron?
Also in some collectible documents titled "ordinary AWE report" it mentions other kids from the Jesse and Dylan's school being under ther influence of an entity called "non-mother" by them drinking her milk and turning to monsters. That is after these kids discovering the slide by following after Dylan and jesse and taking the slide and use to open a door to dimension of this non mother that turned them violent. Is there a connection between this non morher and hiss? Can you dig up anything about these lore related materials and make some explanation video? Would be awesome
I definitely have those topics on my to do list. My hypothesis on the Hiss and Polaris will take a bit of prep work and research before it is finalized.
The whole Ordinary AWE felt like it was taken right out of a Stephen King novel. I think the most curious thing there is one of the kids, Hugo I believe, could not be found in public records as if he never existed.

That's an idea that I have been discussing with some of the community lately. That just like matter is made up of the elements, reality is made up of different Planes/Aspects and each door leads to one.

You know in the music video for Late goodbye there is a similar sign to the desert shore motel, I don't know if that's a coincidence or not just figured I'd point that out.
What if an ascended shifter like Martin Hatch got his slimy hands on an O.O.P like the projector? He could exist in all branching timelines of all the different dimensions in the astral plane. Scary.

I like the cosmology explanation at the end of the video, but where does that leave the astral plane? Perhaps it is the Dark Place, or perhaps the DP is a dangerous portion of the Astral plane.
If we go by ancient Cultures and their beliefs, the Astral plane is thought of as one of two things. Either pure Consciousness in its entirety the place where all Souls reside. For example Kami is a Nature Spirit so a Mountain or Lake is considered to have their own Spirit/Kami that represents it. The Kami doesn't exist here but exists within the Astral Plane. Also in this sense they consider the souls of the dead to go to the same place.

question: how does Max Payne fit in your Remedy Universe? Don't quite remember any major references to water or ocean in there.
It is kind of mentioned by Dylan that Max Payne exists in a different universe. However, Alan Wake authors the Alex Casey novels which are essentially the same story.
There is a couple ways to look at this. Either Max exists in a pocket universe with a name swap. Or Alan unconsciously drew inspiration from this other MP dimension when writing his series.
Personally, once we get the Max Payne remakes I think Remedy will include some new content that will answer this question.
I wonder then, why is the dark presence in the dark place? Is it the source of all creation yet cannot revel in what it’s seed of reality has sprung? Hence why it is so desperate to escape and control not only our plane of reality but all planes? Like I am the reason that any of this exists it is mine to control. Hence the title CONTROL as well? Haha well I know that some game companies do watch these kind of stuff. Square reached out to creators like HMK for things in the past.
I don't think anything I produce will change anything in the story Remedy is making. They have thought the whole thing well thought out already I imagine. It's either, "haha this guy is crazy" or , " oh shit how did he guess?!"
I was talking to Vida a couple months back, the community manager at Remedy, and she has been seeing a lot of people talking about the channel though. If I get any kind of response from them I'll freak out lmao.

As long as the story was written with logical consistency. These powers are hard to handle. There is a line in American Nightmare where Dr. Meadows asks him that very question. Asking why he doesn't just give himself superpowers.

Well we know that Mr. Scratch was able to travel back and forth between the World and the Dark Place at will.
I always considered the story to take place in the Dark Place in a certain sense. More of in a self contained partition set in the Real Arizona desert. It had a window that let us peak out. Let me know what you think, but in my head it is exactly the same as Bird's Leg Cabin being on Cauldron Lake. We know it was physically there in the Real World as Alan and Alice visited it. However, it was only there when the story called for it. As soon as its role was over it vanished back into the Dark Place.
Personally I don't think Scratch is gone. More that in the story of AN he was burned away. It's hard to really say from how vague it is.

It kind of spoils the pacing of Alan Wake if you watch this now. At the moment Alan wake and Quantum Break can be found on Steam. QB is also out on xbox one while alan wake/American Nightmare can be found on xbox 360.

Nope sadly. At that time Microsoft had exclusives on it. We may be getting a remaster for multi console but that's just speculation.

River port in quantum break is not the same river port of Alan Wake. Alan's riverport is in Washington weres quantum break riverport is in massetuette making both quantum break and Alan wake are 2 different realitys as I thought ages back this is how Jesse is alive but jacks gf is gone but not dead from his Reality

I'd have to do more research on Ginnungagap since I dont study Norse much. But I also equate it to Khaos that existed before the great egg split and Kronus was born in the greek mythos.

Ive heard some people discuss that theory. The design of Zane's diving suit is similar to the Former's eye of light. We'll have to wait and see until more of the story comes out.

Thats an interesting thought. In American Nightmare Alan does mention that the Dark Place is full of intelligent life. I'm not sure if Jaeger is directly related here but I've been wondering if the Board originate from the Dark Place.

Should have been better to leave stuff to AW world with more things left to imagination and dealing with more absurd in AW2 , instead of linking with Control and making it all sound like bad SyFy TV show story , which also was QuantumBreak's flaw
Frankly that's why I really enjoy the Tennyson Report in the game. It is an employee complaining that the FBC is spending too much time trying to figure out the lovecraftian setting through science and only having minimal success.

I've tried to watch a few of your vids and I gotta say, I think they all aim too high. You over explain things. I think that's a shame cuz you're clearly putting a lot of effort into it and not stretching it out just to hit a certain minute mark. But it still ends up being more than most people want to digest when it comes to a video game.
Again spelling "Mr. Scratch" produces sound noise which hurts ears and has no reason for being. This is, I guess, the third video where you put this sound effect. Again, please, don't do that.
