Great detailed review as usual! I don't understand why they don't have a 1440p panel, which I think is a must in a premium 17 inch laptop. I would rather have lower refresh rate 1440p with greater brightness than a 1080p 350nit panel, even if it is 360hz with low latency.

Yes, I agree. Seems strange when all the rest have 1440p options

They don't even have the 4k from last year lol. Not saying 4k makes sense in this screen size, but at least it had better color accuracy and was a lot brighter for non gaming usage. I guess Dell just slapped the new cpu and gpu, stacked with the cheapest ddr5 ram they could find, and called it an update. For $500+ ofc.

@Steve, awesome review, covering all the aspects of the laptop. However, that 2.5 hrs battery life with UA-cam playback at 50% brightness is really concerning and becoming a trend with 12th gen H series laptops. Although, we are getting some nice performance boost when plugged in, I think we're going backwards to couple of years, when gaming laptops used to be something to be used in your desk, always plugged in. Ryzen 4000, 5000 and now 6000 series processors have shown that we can have high performance and battery life at the same time, making a gaming laptop far more versatile and enables it to use as laptop, not just a desktop replacement. It may be 10 to 15% slower than 12th gen but can also give 10 hrs+ battery life for that UA-cam playback.

We have seen with Intel spending billions to convince users that they are better than Apple Silicon and they have gone out of their way to ramp up performance with little fires-ectopic to efficiency, which some may argue is the raison d’etre of the M1 chips. A lot of YT creators praise Intel for allowing full performance on battery but that means battery life bombs and I feel if you are unable to do both, as Apple Silicon does, then AMD have gone the better route by power-throttling when on battery, to get those better SoT’s. I get the impression that all the hype for these 12th-gen are going to prove inflated and that next week when the M2 arrives we will see Intel back to square one. Of course, this is a gaming laptop at heart, so Dell have focused on that, but an AMD solution for those that want better battery life would be nice, but I suspect Intel are hanging on for their life and are offering deals if OEMs stay with them exclusively.

I agree mate. I was discussing this with a friend last night. These efficiency cores don't seem to be that efficient after all...

@@OWNORDISOWN Actually people jumped to conclusions thinking they're similar to ARM big little architecture. The fact is that kind of arrangement is not possible yet in a CISC (Complexes Instruction Set computer) design on which x86 is based on. For that the OS and the CPU needs to have far deeper integration currently only possible in RISC based designs or in custom SOC + dedicated OS Combination you see in the gaming consoles. What I think Intel's purpose is to increase the thread count without increasing the power consumption to an extreme as P Cores are already very power hungry. Currently there is no software which can identify and assign lighter threads to E core and heavy threads to P core and that's entirely done by the logic inside the CPU. Its similar to the thread assignment logic used by OS to assign threads to physical cores 1st and then to the logical cores in a SMT enabled CPU.

Great review, Stephen. Been waiting for this one. Disappointing to see the performance of the 3080 TI. Since they don't have the 3080 available, it may be like the X15 R2 where the 3070 TI gives the better value. I don't understand why they offer a QHD in the X15 R2 but not the X17 where it would be more natural IMO, but overall I think Alienware did well with this gen. Excellent video. Yep i've been following it closely. Alot of precious metals are mined in Russia. Palladium mainly comes from Russia, Russia is also the worlds biggest exporter of Nickel. Alluminium is quite high at the moment. Copper - Russia is the 2nd largest exporter after Chile. Platinum-Russia is one of the top 5 exporters. Gold is rising. It wouldn't surprise me if computers continue to rise in price this year. But not only computers look at the price of wheat it has skyrocketed. Ukraine and Russia are 2 of the 5 biggest wheat exporters in the world accounting for 25% of all wheat exports, and then you have the rise in oil prices as well. This year will be tough on everyone. Sanctioning Russia will unfortunately have a boomerang effect for us consumers in the West.

TBH I'm surprised that you even bought this machine. A 17 inch 1080p screen is unacceptable. It's great that Alienware kept the temps in check, for a change. However, other than that, I don't see a lot compelling about it. There are too many compromises to warrant the cost IMO. If I was interested in productivity and gaming, I would look at the competition. I guess this works for those who want maximum framerates and nothing else.
I assume you plan to return this machine for something better.

Yes, this is 2022 where even ultrabooks are moving to 2.5k and 3K displays. I can no longer accept 1080p in a 17-inch panel, it is a massive downgrade if you have ever used 4K. For non-gaming workflows then 4K is a great feature and at this price almost compulsory.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  2 роки тому

Newegg lists the 3060 model of the TUF at $1500 whilst the 5 pro with a 3050Ti is some $200 more expensive. On that basis I think the TUF is better value, especially since they have improved the panels and you now have a mux switch. I still prefer the look and port layout of the Legion 5 Pro but they seem to be asking for a lot of money...

I think the 3070 model is a great machine. The 3070 is definitely capable and if you see a deal its worth having.
I used to UV the CPU and OC the GPU all the time but the 11th gen and 12th gen are often locked down undervolt I have found that there is not as much wriggle room as before. Shame. Diabling the efficiency cores on 12th gen does give a CPU clock boost but higher temperatures but helps in games that like a fast CPU.

7:44 Well the temperatures seems very unbelievable, damn, that cpu is almost 10 degrees cooler than gpu.
What room temperature did you tested the laptop at? Any approximate value will be helpful.
As my Helios 300 is almost close to boiling water, touching 95+ degrees Celsius on cpu (i7-11800H) easily at nearly 25-30. Celsius room temperature.
Are the new thermal pastes very effective? Cause i will be repasting within 1-2 months for sure for my satisfaction.
Undervolting is disabled/locked in my laptop, in "Edit Power Plan" i tried to set "Maximum processor state" to 99% instead of 100% with sudden drop in thermals like 20 degrees celcius, which looks like software based assumption, well, laptop being running nearly at same temperature for next 10+ minutes and no software tweaking can drop physical temperate to 20.c instantly lol.
This technique makes my laptop underperform a lot, so i changed back to 100%.
Talking about these new processors, they look very promising for "content" creators, editor and professionals. (Not only youtubers but i am talking about movie productions and editing done at large scales, and of course music production) cause they are all into APPLE APPLE APPLE currently.

Hello Steve, thank you for the awesome video I have the alienware x17 r2 12700h rtx 3080ti 360hz 1080p , and I apologize in advance for this long text message, but I think this will help many other owners of this laptop.
I noticed on battery some flickering on the bottom of the screen sometimes there is artifcating. I tried changing display to 60hz which seems to solve it and then put it back on 360 hz and tried to change the display power saving mode in the intel graphic command center, which seemed to fix it when turning it off but then it happened again the next day so i turned the display power saving mode on and no more flicker. did you experience anything like that? I appreciate it if try to see if you experience this while surfing the web on battery. Also saw similar problem on reddit , thank you again for your efforts.
Since the intel display power setting didnt solve the issue, I made a call to Dell support and one of their agent remotely checked my laptop and I showed him the screen issue when on battery as I had it filmed using my mobile phone , capturing software doesnt detect it as its hardware issue. The Dell agent uninstalled the igpu intel driver and downloaded the one from dell, and he went into advanced => pci ecpress=> link state power management and changed the values to off on both battery and plugged in modes. I used the laptops for about 30minutes havent realized any issues. What i did next i went back to those settings and set them back to their defaults which is maximum power saving on both battery & plugged in modes and then the screen was flickering & doing double imagery even on desktop. So went back into link state power management and tried to change battery mode to moderate power saving and off on plugged in mode, as of typing this its been like 20 minutes no issues. It seems I narrowed it down to this in advanced power management. I hope this helps and it would be great if u let me know how your machine behaves, and please let me know your thoughts on this if it solves the issue, with your experience is that a defect or you think the new drivers/new intel cpu architecture needs better drivers which might get resolved & ironed out with software. Thank you , and best regards

What's the use of those RGBs in the keydeck when a lot of the keys/functions do not light up? Just don't try to defend them with the one-can-develop-mussle-memory-for-specific-secondaries-placements line of thought, as this can easily be reversed to one-can-develop-mussle-memory-for-all-keys ideology thus no pricy or energy eating RGBs on the front/keydeck are actually needed ;) The rear ring is just for show, pretty much useless, and in a mobile format where every electron out of the battery pack counts, it should be considered a detriment or flaw in the design flair... At least Lenovo in their Legions actually makes use of the RGB/lighting do bolster functionality - sure in the previous/last year gen the included Corsair software made it a detriment to mobile aspect of possible workfklows but Lenovo this year planned to have some of the RGB controls moved to firmware and their own application/software stack within the Legion Centre. But Dell, knowing full well of the drawbacks and flaws of the last year releases, decided against fixing those in the R2 models. It's not like Dell doesn't know people like to see all the keys/functions when it's needed - they're making sure to have such functionality properly implemented in their XPS and and business lines, even in the lower Dell gaming units, but not in the top-of-the-Dell's-gaming-crop...

Nice review as usual. The ultra thin and all ports on the back layout is really not for me. I guess at least the fan noise is passable.
Nice to hear you will review the GE66. I have a GE76 with 12900HK, 3070Ti, and QHD on the way. Out of the options I have seen so far it seems to be the best in the 17 inch class for me. I am just hoping it does not have any high pitched fan whistle in balanced mode.

Thanks! I think you have one of the most powerful systems out there. Ill make sure to listen for any fam whistle on the GE66. My main concern would be the screen, I would have screen issues on my Dragonshield in optimus mode.

@@OWNORDISOWN Yeah, I was surprised when the MSI Store got a few of them in stock the other day as it is still listed as pre-order through resellers. I hope optimus mode does work ok. I guess dedicated mode could be used but I doubt it would make it through a three hour meeting unplugged, and is also very stressful on the battery that way. I also have hopes that a repaste will not be needed with the upgraded thermal pad they are using now for the 12900HK.

This price jack is manufacturers cottoning onto how inflated desktop components are right now for sure, does not reflect performance gains over the non-Ti variants at all. Razer Blade laptop hike for example is just a joke tbh compared to what we've had up to now. I think so many people are buying laptops instead of overvalued desktop GPU's instead because, you can simply get a much better deal doing so but now, that's out the window.

I got the same exact model delivered yesterday, and then you post this review lol. But I must say, so far using the laptop I have agree with all that you mentioned. The cooling is definitely on point here, and while the 12700h is a great improvement, the 3080ti has almost identical performance to the 3080 I had in the Msi GE76 that I had to return.
