Donnie is 80 now and can still sing this. It's amazing.
i am from Pittsburgh Pa. Donnie is a hometown hero! he has plenty of awesome music. you absolutely need to hear more. he's still bringing it today, too. & he can still wail!
Donnie turned 80 a little while back and still rockin'. He's fighting cancer now, prayers if you can for one of the best known / unknowns, Pittsburgh proud via Elwood City and Carnegie.
I saw Donnie in Cleveland in the early 1980's. I didn't want to go to the concert (I'm more of a Zeppelin kinda guy). My friend made me go with him. Truly, it was a blast! The band was great, high powered and polished. Donnie was engaging, funny and a great performer. I'm so glad I went...never judge a book by it's cover!
The layering done in this recording was ground-breaking. It's a masterpiece of rock 'n roll.
I don’t always listen to Ah Leah! but when I do, so does everyone else in a 3 block radius.
Amen
Hell yeah!!!!!
Truth!
Not many know that Donnie played guitar in the 70's funk band Wild Cherry. Donnie is still kicking butt today at age 80!!!
I had the Wild Cherry album (you know, _the_ album) when I was a kid in the '70s, and later _Ah Leah_ was all over the radio and I always loved that song (though for whatever reason I never heard any of his other stuff back then).
But I never knew Donnie was in Wild Cherry. Very cool, thanks for the info.
Before that he was the frontman in the Jaggerz!
I absolutely love it when these music reviewers hear bands I've loved for 40 years plus and realize how great music was back in the 70s and 80s.
I grew up 2 blocks from Donnie's childhood home. His mother was our Den Mother in Cub Scouts. I hung out with his brother and worked on Donnie's Jaguar XK-E.
I've met Donnie in Pittsburgh and he is the NICEST man you'll ever meet. He made sure to say hi and get pictures with everyone who wanted one and would just talk up a storm with anyone.
He lives like 2 miles from me. I used to give him a ride home after he’d drop his Cadillac off at the dealership that I worked at. He’s a super nice guy.
Whats cool about this song is every voice of any kind on this song is Donny
My wife is the star of the dreams that were inspired by this song! we are a month away from 50 years married--obviously we did "make it"!!
Ah! Leah! was released in 1980 and was voted ‘Song of the Year’. Takes me back 50 years to college days. Great song!
I had this cassette back in 1981!!!
He has a lot of songs & STILL records new music! Donny was in 2 bands before going solo, 1 being Wild Cherry who had the #1 hit
"Play That Funky Music" before he joined.
He was touring last year (2023) with REO Speedwagon when he had to cancel because he wss diagnosed with cancer.
But he is touring again this year in his 70's!!!!
He is extremely popular in W. Pennsylvania where he's from & this song is commonly played at Pennsylvsnia major league sports games & races.
I recently found a UA-cam clip of Donnie celebrating his 80th birthday, performing a concert in front of his home town crowd of Pittsburgh. He was totally killing it!!
Ah...Donnie❤
Just saw Donnie at the Bluestone in Columbus, Ohio on 4/6/24. Still rocking at 81 years of age. Excellent show. Lots of energy although he had to sit about every other song. His pipes are still amazing. He hit all those tough notes on "Ah Leah", "Sweet Merilee" and "That's the way love oughta be". I also saw him back in the day in the early 80's. Enjoyable today as he was 40+ years ago.
He's always been considered one of those underrated or under the radar type of guys who never seemed to blow up as much as he should have. He has quite a few well written songs with catchy melodies and impressive vocals. Try his early 80's semi-hit "Do You Compute" for more great stuff.
Amen on the song LOVE IS LIKE A ROCK. And the song DO YOU COMPUTE!!!
Looks like Donnie Iris is BACK ON THE STREET.
Donnie Iris and Sniff & The Tears - you are the Indiana Jones of music reactions. Digging up those lost treasures.
I love this song and until recently i never knew who did it. I was amazed by his appearance also lol
But no denying he had a great song. He hit those high notes !! Thankx for your reaction 🤟🎵🎸
If you punch up his name with this song, a live version will be on it.
He looked 15-20 years older but still nails this song live
I still say, his best song. That's the way love outta be.
Here he is looking like Bill Nye the science guy and jamming out hard! Just goes to show you really can't judge a book by its cover ✌️
Donnie's "My Girl" will absolutely knock you out. (Seriously...it's an amazing display of layered background harmony vocals and intense amounts of melody. It even has a killer sax solo!)
Glad you could find this gem, it has been one of my favorites since 1980. Kelvin in Nova Scotia.
Always loved this song, never tired of it. It came out during a time when the music scene was full of what was called "faceless artists", many we didn't know what they looked like and it didn't much matter. Then MTV came along, and you know the rest.
edit: Not a one hit wonder, try Love is Like a Rock
Joking, Agnes, and Shock Treatments were also great songs.
GREAT REACTION, HARRI. My Girl was an even bigger hit than Ah! Leah! Donnie is great.
Love is Like a Rock isn't even near the top of the songs he had IMHO. Agnes. Do you compute. Sweet Merilee. This Time it must be love. Thats the way love ought to be. So many great songs.
@@davidziemann9653 Well, you are welcome to have a differing opinion, I prefer Love Is Like A Rock.
Love this song great song
When this came out it was fire for my ears 😊
Good one!!! Very underrated hard rock love song 🤘🏽❤️🔥🤘🏽❤️🔥🤘🏽❤️🔥
Wow!! Reminds me of Buddy Holly's look, but a completely different sound!!! NICE!!!
Great early 80's rock song! Brings back memories of High School and weekend parties. I have it on my channel. Thanks for the flashback!✌
Hello from Leah, Cody Wyoming!!! Please never stop reacting my bestie😁 you're awesome
some of the best screams ever put to record at the end of this song
A favorite
Donnie Iris visually reminded me of Buddie Holly, music, as innovative as Buddie's, but different.
🎹🎹🎹 🎸🎸
I bought the album for this song. A great 80's song.
Have always 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 this tune. ♡
He was on a hit in 1970 by The Jaggerz called "The Rapper."
I didn’t know this!! That’s cool, loved that song!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yea, the guy looks like a rock 'n' roll accountant, but you hear those screaming vocals at the end, the deception is complete. It's a very well-written, arranged, and produced rocker. Got a LOT of radio play back in the day, a classic.
Love this song!!!
"Love Is Like A Rock" you need to check out next from Donnie Iris. Saw him in 1993 when he opened for Foreigner.
Hello Harri! Thanks so much for taking a chance on Donnie! He has a brilliance that escaped many other artists of the era. "King Cool" is a great album! I think you will enjoy it! Peace, friend and thanks for your terrific channel!
Don't remember him....good dong but he couldn't have been very popular.
@@michaelasay8587 Hey friend. Agreed, not popular as far as airplay, but his songs are truly memorable. So many responses mentioned, " Love is Like a Rock", " Sweet Marilee", "My Girl" and " The Rapper" from the early days. Give him a listen. I think you'll like the breadth of his catalogue.
Donnie Iris... I asked myself where did this guy from ? LOL! amazing song thanks Harri,
Pittsburgh
The day this came out, I was driving. It came on the radio and I drove to the nearest record shop "Licorice Pizza " and bought the album. In my nearly 60 years of record buying this is the only time I heard a song and had to HAVE it no mater what.
Yeah this is a good one alright. Nice reaction too. You may want to listen to "Merilee" by him. Another banger! 👍👍👍👍👍Oh, he was also with a band called The Jaggerz in the 60's who did a song called "The Rapper."
Donnie had a big hit in the late 60s with his group The Jaggerz: “The Rapper.” I really preferred the swagger of that one over his later solo work. Someone should request that one. I’m sure most of the besties would remember “The Rapper.” Thanks, Harri.
Is he still alive?
Yes 'The Rapper' by Jagger Z that was my favorite song for the whole year it came out. Thanks John Chu for pointing this out and yes I agree Harri should check out the very good song called 'The Rapper' JaggerZ
The B side of The Rapper 45 rpm single, "Will She Believe Me," has a great Woodstock era sound.
Thanks for the reminder John, loved The Rapper.
I had no idea that he was in that band! That was the first 45 that I ever won from a radio station! I had to call in and be like the fifth caller or something and I got that Jagger's the rapper as a prize. Wild! I had no idea. Peace!
Heard this on radio 20 minutes ago. Used lyrics to find it. Never knew who this guy/band was but always liked it. Has a great vocal hook and power chords. Rock the house, Donnie...
From my hometown Pittsburgh. Still get to see him playing locally. Smaller venues like Jergels. 500 people. Up close and personal.and he rocks every time. Try Agnes. My favorite by King Cool
My favorite too
Really like your reactions to Boston, my favorite group. Donnie Iris has some great tunes such as High and the mighty, Do You Compute, Love is Like a Rock, Tough World and alot more.
Donnie Iris is the #1 example in Rock 'n' Roll of not judging a book by its cover. Genius singer-songwriter, very good guitarist and keyboardist, and producer. By the way, those layered background vocals were all him. That's how amazing he is. He just turned 81 years old on February 28th.
Unfortunately, Donnie Iris basically was a one-hit wonder. "Ah! Leah!" was one of only 2 Top 40 hits he ever had, the other one being "Love Is Like A Rock" from his second album _King Cool,_ and it was his only Top 30 hit. ("Ah! Leah!" hit #29 in 1980, while "Love Is Like A Rock" hit #37 in 1981.)
It's a real shame cuz Donnie actually did have some other very good songs: "Do You Compute" and "Injured In The Game Of Love" especially. You should react to these other songs, too. Thank you for this great reaction video!!!!
I Absolutely LOVE this tune, always have! and I am older than most, lol...don't matter, good is good good! Props bro, I Love you!
I better get ready for hearing this song in my head for the next few days, happens every time I hear it. (Here we go again) 😂🤣🤣
From Pittsburgh to the UK 🇬🇧 .. I love it
Backing vocals on this cut were amazing!
I saw many of his concerts in the Pittsburgh area a few decades ago. Great band, great man!
I watched ur Pat Travers episode too. I honestly get into it seeing you hearing a great song for the first time. I group late 70s and 80s and I truly believe it was some of the greatest rock in history. Another great great Donnie Iris is Love is like a Rock. And cool Benn book
Love this song, Harri!
It's a true JAM!
I remember well when it came out and, everyone
was rocking to it.
Great choice, great channel my Man!
Great tune. I saw him in concert in Norfolk Virginia, in '82 as the opening act for Hall and Oates when I was a kid. Great show. My Dad still today talks about how foul-mouthed he was onstage haha
wow i am glad you got a hold of this wounderful tune you discribe it to a t great must should be given discripsion and you do that well
This song is the song I picked my daughter's name out of I said if I ever have a daughter her name is going to be Leah and when I came to Arizona from Massachusetts I met my second husband we have a daughter Leah I've loved the song since I Young
All vocals Donnie Iris
He had 80th birthday and can STILL sing this song. Look on UA-cam for Donny Iris and the Cruisers.
And I believe he recently beat cancer. Onc of the nicest guys on the planet.
Dang! Thanks for the reminder that we had such good music back in the day. The most unlikely-looking person could rock it out.
Yeah, he's known for the most part, for this song. And the song is the popular point, a lot of people couldn't tell you who sings it.
Harri, this came out in the early 80s when I just started college. The rock bands in the clubs covered this song and we really had a blast dancing to it. Then we went out and bought the album and wore it out. I believe that, unfortunately, Donny might be a one-hit wonder! Thanks for bringing back some fun memories with a great reaction, Harri! ❤ 6:20
Another great hit by him....Love Is Like A Rock!
I just love your reaction to a lot of these songs but you were feeling like I do, every time with this song. When the Detroit radio jocks picked up on this when it came out in the early ‘80’s , it was on EVERY station all the time. Those DJ’s enlightened us that Donnie sang “ The Rapper” which was a big hit here but we had never heard of the Jaggerz and that song was big around here before Ah Leah. Donny was also in Wild Cherry before this collection of musicians named The Cruisers. Song should have been a number 1 but it got to number 6 in Canada and we get their stations being just across the river from them so we were twice as lucky to hear it. I wish the best for Donny as he was dealing with some health issues but we will always love this tune. Thank you Harri ! Peace
I recommend "Love Is Like A Rock".
Try Love is Like a Rock by Donnie Iris. ❤
Real instruments love it😊
I love his song "Agnes" a tragic tale of a toxic relationship
Grew up in Pittsburgh, Donnie is a staple and still going strong in his 80s. Try his song Agnes next. Its a fun song.
One of the best of the one hit wonders! He's from Pennsylvania, and they still play this at Steelers games, at least the "here we go again" part.
How can he be a one hit wonder. I have been a huge fan of Donnie since this song came out. Actually "My Girl" from 1982 is his highest charted song at #25 which charted higher than Ah Leah which peaked at #29. "Love Me Like A Rock" went to #37. Three songs that hit the top 40 and therefore not a One Hit Wonder at all.
Great one hit wonder. That being said he's like in his 70's now and still tours when he's not bartering in Cleveland . Look's like Buddy Holly on this album cover.
Excellent representation of 80s music. Layers of harmony, typical rock chord progression, catchy chorus, & good guitar solo.
Harri, THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for reviewing this song! Donnie Iris is such an underrated talent! He was a regional superstar here in the 70s and 80 out of Pennsylvania! The next song you should hit it’s called “AGNES”, it is a banger!! Here is the link from the same album as Ah Leah. ua-cam.com/video/L5ii-msopis/v-deo.html
"Love Is Like A Rock" is my favorite Donnie Iris Song plus "My Girl" is Definitely a Rocker but the previous mentioned song is even Heavier then "My Girl". Great Reaction my friend.
Try "Love Is Like A Rock" from Donnie Iris. Also, "Go For Soda" from Kim Mitchell.
Looking at Donnie Iris, you'd never think he could rock like that or just off-the-charts wail at the end. God, I love this song.
I worked with him in the 90's and early 2000's. Band I roadied with did a bunch of shows over the years together, of course he head lined.
Donnie Iris played with the jaeggerz they did a song called The Rapper
Love is like a Rock was another hit of his. Thank you for the reaction. I grew up with this. Love this song today too
Great tune, don't recall him on his own, but John's reminder of The Rapper brought back great memories. Great reaction Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Sorry for speeding, officer. Ah, Leah came on.
We played this song in the operating room time and time again! Such a good vibe❤ thanks for sharing your input Harri❤
I agree, this is a surprisingly hard rocking song for 80s synth-ridden pop. Very well done!
I always learn something from your group, Harri. I never took an interest in Donnie Iris back in my time (he's now 80 and I'm early 70s). Whether that was intentional, or I just didn't have the time to hear every artist of the era, I don't know. I definitely heard this song before and while it didn't grab me then, it sounds a lot better to me now. Constantly changing and developing music tastes, I guess. Anyway, he's from Western PA (as am I) so I probably should have known more about him. I didn't know he was part of The Jaggerz and Wild Cherry. As I said, your followers always teach me something new.
Saw him in the 80s after this song came out, he opened for Michael Stanley Band in Cleveland. Thanks man great reaction. Michael Stanley brought him out for an encore after the show to hear his scream again.
Early 80s banger!! I was 13 dancing
He was a three hit wonder, although the first time was with the band The Jaggerz in the 60's. He was 36! when this song dropped.
He just turned 80 and is much loved in Pittsburgh pa
Not the song you'd expect from someone who looks like he will also sell you insurance.. great tune
Please check out the group Wild Cherry, play that funky music white boy. I think you'll like it, Donnie had a part of that group 😊
This song was HUGE on LA music - the video as well. It continues to get airplay to this day.
Huge in L.A.? Can you imagine Pittsburgh. I almost named my daughter Leah because of this song.
Some may say he was a one hit wonder .. but I think they may not heard "Love is Like a Rock" or "Injured in the Game of Love" or "Do you Compute" Not to mention hits he had in bands before going solo!
Thank you harri
Check out his 80th birthday bash, he still got it. He rocks harder at 80 than a lot of others do at 40.
