There's a very long discussion to be had about this. I don't know that the internet is creating more or better athletes, but as mentioned, it distorts our perception of the norm. On average though, yeah, athletes have been improving for a long time. One of the biggest contributors is that in the mid-80s, all of a sudden sports were an actual thing that anyone who worked hard enough could achieve, and where even a journeyman could make enough to take care of a family well forever. Conditioning became a year round thing, so did nutrition. Athletes are machines now. In the 80s, for a period Mario Lemieux was as known as Wayne Gretzky, and it that same triple-S tier of player, and he smoked cigarettes on television in his post game interviews. Just imagine someone like. Who's the number 2 in the NBA. Kevin Durant? Imagine Kevin Durant pulling up for a post game with a pack of Marlboro's. I know there's still a drug culture in sports, but I think the days of going out and drinking until dawn a couple nights a week is gone and dead. You work hard because your body is your business. There's also a general improvement of lower tier players, as the ceiling keeps growing for talent, the floor comes with it. The base minimum talent level to be a professional athlete now is not far from the top end talent, save for a few super star mutants, of generations past, is more or less my thesis. In some sports more than others.
There’s a girl that’s a freshman on varsity for my high schools women’s basketball team and she dropped a 30 point double-double. And at my brothers basketball game the ref kept not calling the ball dead when it hit the top of the backboard which it’s supposed to be dead ball. His coach kept getting mad and got into a heated argument. The ref said at one point sir I’ve been doing this for 20 years the top is not out. My brothers coach went that’s cool I’ve been doing this 30 years. Straight savage. He got T’d up obviously. But omg
