I will always play this music the way I understand it. And if it doesnt sound flamenco, well... I am not pretending to be flamenco! There are some things about the culture that I never quite wanted to get into, things that I strongly disagree with. I am playing this music as a Russian, and it touches my heart, and because of that I know there will be people who will feel the same.

Your words ring true Grisha. Play music because it touches your heart, and we will listen for the same reason. Every form of music is part of the culture of the time and place where it was created. But then the music becomes part of world culture, available to every musician with the skill to play it, and every listener willing to hear and learn.

Point is, I do not want to limit myself to any one style. For me, flamenco compositions I play are wonderful pieces of music first! They just happen to be composed in flamenco style. I am not pretending I am a Spaniard from Granada or Sevilla. I am a Russian from St. Petersburg!

Dear idalotumbao! I've listened to flamenco music non-stop since I was 4 or 5, which makes it 25-26 years. I understand flamenco sentiment because it's the music that shaped my musical taste. When I started playing I could imitate and copy very very well because I have a good ear and fine hands.

Absolute musical genius, so much emotion and feel in every note he plays!
I am in my mid 40's and in my lifetime for sure Grisha is the most complete Flamenco player. The execution of some of Paco's technique mixed with his own style and the odd gentle classical touch makes for the most wonderful flamenco interpretation.

Grisha! Can´t belive I found him on UA-cam!! These videos bring tears of nostalgia to my eyes... I was a big fan of this talented young man already in ´93, when I lived in Russia. Me and my friends were regulars at his concerts, were his father would perform too. I was delighted and impressed by Grisha´s talent back then and I´m definitely not less impressed today, 15 years later! Molodets, Grisha! Keep up the good work and good luck!

I am still coming again and again to this performance, even after all this years. Grisha, you play the guitar the way it's meant to be played. I would love to play this piece as fluently as you. The tremolo, the picado, all is spot on and, at the same time, so russian :)

love your music, sir, and I love reading your comments about playing this music as a Russian in St. Petersburg. Absolutely love that. Paco de Lucia also heard criticisms about not being flamenco enough and I think all of that talk is a waste of time. You are so inspirational through your music and words. Thank you, maestro.

Having said that, I must admit that I enjoy listening to Sabicas, Paco, Gerardo, Manolo, Vicente, Tomate and others tremendously! But I also feel that it is not the only way for this music to be played.

  • @Grisha_Goryachev

But I will never imitate anybody anymore. I am not a flamenco guitarist and I am not trying to be, or say I am. I just play the music I love the way I understand it. Which makes me a guitarist and musician with no other labels. If I like a jazz composition I'll learn it. If I want to play a 12-tone classical work, I will.

It was produced by ABC-Paramount Records, and is out of print and not yet on a CD, which is a shame...By learning this piece you have again made it possible for all the world to hear it...You performed it with amazing skill and Sabicas would have been amazed and awed by your performance of it...

Over the years I've played this composition in a variety of ways. What you hear in this video is the way I felt it at the time of this particular recording. I do not think that careful musicality is appropriate for Danza Arabe. After all, it's in close association with death, and sentimentality is uncalled for. I'll upload an audio of another performance of this piece to MySpace account I have, and see if you like it more.

It's Flamenco, not classical. Flamenco is mainly improvisation with given tools - So expect there to be tons of versions and infinite ways to play it. Just look for Sabicas' interpretation of the Zambra or Danza Mora, Danza Arabe.

I do believe that Grisha has a more balanced and refined technique than Sabicas, but that is a long way from saying he's BETTER. He plays this music beautifully and with passion, but it's not like he's contributed to the repertoire in the way Sabicas did. As for nature vs. nurture, there are videos of Grisha from about age 9 where he plays with nearly the same speed he has today. So he may not have been born with this ability, but it certainly showed itself early on.

I've studied with Scott Wolf, a student of both Grisha and Eliot. I'd say neither Fisk nor Parkening has much on Grisha when it comes to technique, This guy is essentially perfect in this regard. He far surpasses Sabicas in terms of pure technical balance and achievement. For instance, I doubt Sabicas or Montoya or perhaps even Paco de Lucia can play picados as fast as Grisha with i and m, and then turn around and nearly match that same speed with a and m, which Mr. Goryachev certainly can do.

  • @jamesgram123
    @jamesgram123 17 років тому

Although Grisha obviously has these elements down in his Flamenco playing, I would suggest that Fisk and Parkening, two of the most refined and sensitive classical players out there (athough in VERY different ways) would take a guy like Grisha and help him apply his phenomenal Flamenco-based technical skills and interpretative ability to classical music. Let him speak for himself on this, but this is what I would imagine a top classical player would be able to do for any top flamenco player.

I've heard that a lot of this stuff Grisha just figured out by ear from recordings and stuff. I may be completely wrong; that's just what my teacher told me. So, you could pretty easily do that, especially with the video as a visual aid. Then if you transcribed it, you'd have the notation for free!

Phenomenal technique - his picado and alzapúa rival (Carlos) Montoya and almost even Sabicas himself. Should like to hear him do some classical, Barrios say. With all due respect to Christopher Parkening and Eliot Fisk, from whom he's apparently 'taken instruction' since coming to the USA, I really don't know what they could teach him. Can he compose?

However, they are 2 completely different songs. I've done searches on several music sites and the iTunes store only to find the same version of the song that's on the CD. I can find no recording of the song that's in this video - as far as I can tell, the song in this video is NOT Danza Arabe, but some other song. Any ideas?
