The Soul Matter Universe of SM Dotson
The multiverse contains many variations of our own world. In my gothic fiction world, the Soul Matter Universe as I call it, it is much like our own, but where the afterlife and the soul have a much more tangible place in the world of the living. For one thing, possession, often incorrectly thought to be demonic, takes place at a much greater degree, so much that before the 20th century, the exorcist played a greater role in the lives of the young victims and their parents. In this world, science has discovered the soul, weakening the role of traditional religion. The scientific discovery of the soul revealed that souls stay near their own corpse, and on the full moon, are able to move about and inhabit the bodies of children who are vulnerable to the merging of two bodies of soul matter. With this discovery, and the subsequent outrage of parents across the Western world, the Great Grave Quarantine was enacted, thereby creating great cities of the dead in remote places, mostly owned by the Forever Field corporation, who made a killing off the profits. Science and capitalism continued its progress, as it does, and discovered that a person’s soul cluster contains their memories, and within a short amount of time, scientists learned how to communicate with the memories of the deceased with advanced technology, funded by Cold War governments, replacing the Space program that got a man to the moon in our own timeline in the multiverse.
