  • That's right. The verdict is in and today we look at what the SpaceX Starlink Mini Dish early adopters are saying about their experience with the new hardware, speeds, and limited data plan.
As promised here is the link to a USB-C PD to barrel power adapter: amzn.to/4cLmNs7
    My questions for you:
    1) Do you already have a SpaceX Starlink Mini, if so, what is your verdict?
    2) If not, and SpaceX offered you the opportunity to purchase it, would you?
    3) If you were to purchase a Mini, what would be your use case?
    4) If NOT, what does SpaceX need to change to get you to buy?

Got mine last week, on a road trip up to the top of Washington state. Pulled over to a couple of view points, put it on top of the car and joined the meeting. Working great for me and my wife. The cost for the equipment isn’t that bad considering the lifetime (I’m still using the original BETA dish), just need an increase in data but I’ll pay extra until then. It’s worth the money as I can still get paid wherever I want to be and not be cell/wifi locked.

We were seriously considering purchasing the mini for use in our RV. The price of $599 and the data cap are what held us back. If the price comes down and the data cap is lifted, we’ll be all over it. The option of cable length is a great idea as well as the USB-C adapter…I wouldn’t even mind these as options

I can keep this short. If they remove the cap at some point, and “include” the proper connections that are needed for the kind of use it’s designed for, I would purchase it. I was offered to purchase by the 4th. This would be perfect for us since my wife works from home. We are limited going places and having to wait for certain days because of the lack of cell coverage in our area (Eastern Oregon). I seriously considered, but the initial price is too high for me. If it was half of that, I would have purchased. We could probably work with 50gb, but I am with you. If it’s an add on to your unlimited home service, it should be an extension of that. I originally purchased the Gen 2 package and was very disappointed to find that it was not portable. This totally fills that gap. I agree the $150 is doable since the roaming package is the same price. I just cannot live with paying roughly $1,000 just for the residential service and this add on. Revolutionary concept and hope to get it some day, but I’ll have to wait for a price drop :(

I got mine & it works pretty good! I filled out the survey they sent & said a few times that the data cap is bad. If anything, since it's an ad-on, it should go together with the 1TB "throttle" cap of the residential plan since it really won't be used 24/7 more than likely. I understand being the "first" we early users are paying a premium for the hardware. The only other thing I want right away is the USB-C adapter and a shorter cable, but I know that will come. I already made it a nice kit in the laptop bag. Also a note... I ordered mine before getting the e-mail. Just went into my account & it was there able to order. I could have ordered up to two if I wanted. No idea why, but this is how it worked. I got the invite e-mail two days after my order confirmation.

I think it's silly that they're selling the new and supposedly better performing standard dish for $300 in my area but I would still have to pay $600 for the smallest and slower dish. I'm sure they'll run a sale on it eventually.

I would consider getting it if I could piggyback it on my regional roam package that I already have so I could keep my home connected when I travel, as my wife still works and I can keep an eye on my house as we have things that need to be connected all of the time ie… doorbell, garage door openers, cameras and pool equipment. Nothing that takes a lot of data but I need to be able to monitor while we’re away.

    1. I don’t like them trying to pressure me into it. Purchase before the 4th.
    2. The price is just too high for an add-on service. If it was ~$200, I would have pulled the trigger, but not nearly $600- no way.
    3. A data cap on us (US) is ridiculous.
Maybe in the future if they drop the adoption price, we’ll see.

I now have fiber to the house and no need for residential Starlink. But, the Mini would be perfect for those times I'm dry camping in the high desert. No cell service out there. Not everyone you see in a motorhome, camper, trailer, van, car… is on vacation. A decent share are living their life while working remotely.

Also you can order a 5.5 mm to usb-c adaptor from amazon to power from any usb c power source for $9. Just ordered! All your complaints are invalid!!! Time for a new video dude! Your video is irrelevant and out dated!!! Also the extra cost FAR outweighs the additional benefits! The possibilities are now ENDLESS! Thank you STARLINK!! I happily paid the extra cost for this incredible device, I mean a portable satellite high speed internet device for a few hundred dollars??? WOW!!! a decade ago this would be completely unimaginable and a fantasy! Sooo ... less whining and complaining and kudos to this incredible Technology bro!

I would honestly rather just have the direct to satellite from my mobile phone service, but this will have to work for now. Is the problem bandwidth capacity? That would seem to be dependent on the satellite constellation. Is the problem production capacity? Are they still having initial startup issues? Either way the problem will go away in a few months. Is the problem with marketing and pricing? Or, as you suggested, is it boneheaded planning and projection? There are plenty more issues to consider. Personally, I thing we are on the receiving end of startup woes and it will be a new ball game in 6 months. Regardless of all that, I watched the entire screed. Keep up the flow of commentary.

They originally included everything needed to charge that car *with* the vehicle.
Mobile charger with adapters came in a black case inside the trunk.
Once the Model 3 came out in 2019, they decided everyone that wanted home charging to purchase a Wall Connecter.
No mobile charger kit included with any of the vehicles (S,X,Y,3 or Cyber Truck) which continues to this day.

On a side note, I hope you still are on the Atlanta POP. Unless you use M$ Edge instead of Firefox, there is terrible lag times thru the Miami POP. Speeds are decent at 165DL and 18-20 UL with a 30-32 ping. But it takes forever with UA-cam videos to start on Firefox. And Edge starts instantly. Did not have that problem on the Atlanta POP.

I'm a trucker, with no home system to add to. If they made the Mini available for the same $299 that I can get the full size dish for, and had a standalone data plan, unlimited "roam", for $99/mo, I'd be all over it. Heck, even at the residential $129 I'd consider it. The monthly should be a bit lower than the full size plan, due to the reduced performance. And if they would do a throttled 50 Mbps plan for $50/mo, they would sell more of these things to truckers than they would know what to do with. My current LTE setup is typically 5-10 Mbps out on the road.

Like you said the cable is too big for moving around, there is no option at least for right now to connect directly to a car or a power bank.
There also the Pipe Adapter that is included in box. Why you include that if the primary use was for moving around?

I compare this to the roam plan at $150/mo vs the $30/MO for the mini. that is a 75% discount, every month. 50gb data cap, you would have to have a 170 gb month before the roam plan breaks even. I RV about every other week end, seems the cell data service is always poor or does not work at those weekend locations. I would be a regular user but not a volume data user so Data cap will not be that big of an issue. I am excited about this plan and will be getting the mini. I also love the lower wattage when I am dry camping. I also love having a backup to my home coax cable wifi.

    • @USMC6976
      @USMC6976 Місяць тому

You are not comparing apples to apples. You forgot, the owner of the plan has to have a standard home version also, that's $120. The $30 for the mini makes it equal to the roaming version. If I'm using the mini, then I'm not using my home data. It's a wash. A data cap makes no sense.

Sorry JChristina, RVers, and and first responders are not going to use this as it requires a Residental Plan as a base plan. As an RVer, I can park in the shade and deploy my Standard motorized dish up to 75 feet away from the RV and it talks to the router inside my trailer. Having the router inside the mini is a negative for most users, IMHO, as it means you have to be in an open area with few obstructions.

Also need to see DC barrel jack, USBC PD and Gigabit Ethernet with POE input. And for F sakes put a WIFI 6 AP chip in the box. I am somewhat ok with 50 GB, but there needs to be a contingency -- a possible slow down thereafter 50 GB to a guaranteed rate of 10mb up by 10mb down depending on sat. signal strength. But seriously. 500 GB is more reasonable with a slowdown there after. Hardware wise and plan wise Starling REALLY REALLY missed the spec. and expectation goal here.

Any external power station that has either/both an integrated AC inverter (ie.. AC out for the Starlink AC adapter).. OR.. a USB-C PD port will work. A simple 5521 - USB-C adapter will allow you to ditch the Starlink AC adapter and plug directly into a USB-C PD port.

Starlink data plans are too convoluted and unnecessary. Evidently, they are based on the perceived ability to pay. I refuse to get the mini dish because of the data cap. I was invited to get the min-dish, but I will use my Verizon Hot Spot on my cell phone instead until Starlink can make their data plan more rational.

To connect to a car's 12 volt system, get an inverter from a car supply store, with an adapter, plug into the car power point , voilà ça marche, moins de quatre vingt Euros ( eighty bucks)

Yep.. Inverters do reduce total power by 5-15% depending on quality.

12:09 fun activity: soaring in a 2-32 3 seat glider around Tehachapy , where the wind turbines turn, the bored guy in the backseat needs the
portable antenna to watch the football game. 12 volt battery, inverter fit neatly as ballast to place the CG inside the load envelope, 3 hours in the thermals.

Got the email, liked the monthly cost,, put it in my cart. UNTIL, I saw the price, then to power it keeps you less than mobile, and being capped at 50GB. Those 3 things made me change my mind PRICE/POWER/CAPS no thx

Very disappointed. I would love this for my yacht, you are absolutely right about the data cap and having to have residence plan plus not making a back packing dish easy to connect to 12 volts. My yacht never exceeds 10mph so it’s hardly going to stress their system. The only designated marine package is $5000 that’s for super yachts. They have screwed this one up. Not going to get one.

Colombian here, the reason it is way cheap here is because it is a poor country, even usd $200 for mini dish and monthly fee of $35 is expensive (minimun salary here is usd $315 per month), but still will be a game changer where there is no other option

Honestly, 50 ft of cable is probably too much for the average user, but I'd rather have 50 ft and need 10 ft than have 10 ft and need 50 ft.

    • @5thGenNativeTexan
      @5thGenNativeTexan Місяць тому

Exactly. My experience has been that the included 50' power cable is so thin and light, that the difference between something like 20' and 50' would be negligible

"The United States takes the brunt". You are not comparing the data with the salaries of these countries. In the United States they can pay that amount of dollars. Not in Latin America.

Today I got a roam starlink for my van. I didn't get the mini because there's nothing about it I like. Too bad because I've been waiting for a 12v starlink. Very disappointed with the mini.
