Opel Insignia Grand Sport 1.5 Turbo (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Opel Insignia replaced the Vectra in 2008. At the time Opel claimed Insignia will be radically different from its current D-segment model. Early Insignia Concept with a Corvette motor was indeed a true luxury car, but the 2008 Insignia was somewhat underwhelming.
2017 Opel/Vauxhall Insignia is what the previous car wasn’t. It looks different enough that it finally deserves the new name. To me it looks more like Volkswagen Arteon, than Passat, even though its priced like the latter.
Opel Insignia is really “grand”. The car is even longer than Skoda Superb, although the Czech model has 1 cm longer wheelbase. And of course Skoda has the largest boot in its class. Opel offers very modest 490 litres. This is also a fair bit less, than in Ford Mondeo or Volkswagen Passat.

OK, since I own this car for about two months now, here's my 2 cents:
1,5 petrol engine with 165 KS is best out there! Sure it cannot compete with 328i or even 320i, but in this class of small petrol engines, I hold my thoughts of this being the best. Don't know if Marek drove this thing on a highway, it feels very good in higher speeds, never would say that it's only 1,5 turbo. Biggest lack of this engine is that they maybe fitted large turbo on it, so it's pretty much dead around 2k rpm. Boot space is small on paper, but YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST mention the liftback boot opening, it's life saving for families with small kids, access to whole boot is phenomenal thing! Also, I didn't had any problems with roof on back seats, I'm 6 foot tall. And most importantly - on our market (Serbia), I got this car for about 22k EUR (no leather and 17" wheels, not 18" like on video), and I wouldnt pay 35k for it, that for sure! :)
PS - had no problem with manual gearbox ;)

Yes, I did take it on the motorway. It's surprisingly good there. Not an engine for overtaking on b-roads though.

I just got given this car by my insured as a hire car , my car is a 2017 focus ST remapped .
      It’s not terribly disappointing considering it’s a 1.5 on a 1600kg car
The speakers are better than my own the System isn’t better than the Sync 3.
I do find the driving position a Bit off as in I can’t get my Knees under the steering wheel unless it’s right up. I’m 6ft 2ins . In the back of your a sloucher your head just about avoids the roof but if you sit bolt upright then yes your head will touch the roof .
It picks up Speed in the mid range rather well but does run out of Puff rather quickly , there’s little point in red lining it the power continues to drop off as the revs increase so around town it nips around rather well for a big car but if your a seedy Gonzales then may be its not the car for you :)😛
But the average law abiding driver it’s perfectly useable . I’ve not yet driven it on a highway or M-way but I think it’ll hold 80-90 mph no problem the Roma sit quietly at 70mph there’s no buzz from the engine . It rides bumps brilliantly well compared to my ST on 19” alloys the steering is light it does lunge abit if you chuck it about but it’s a big car 😐. I think a Used Buy you couldn’t ask for more it looks more than it costs it creates an impression of having a few £ bob in your pocket with the neighbours .

I've had 2 Insignias last one being the elite nav 2.0d, I have the new GS coming in March 2018 and not once have I had gear box issues and both previous cars have been a pleasure to drive both around the town and on long distance, speed always there when you needed it. poor review out of many on youtube.

Owned one for 2.5 years now,.. found a lot of this review incorrect to be honest. Far superior to the Mondeo - equivalent Mondeo is £1000 more expensive (more so since PSA took over VX and the facelift Insignia was released this year, prior to this the VX was around £2500 cheaper). Gearbox is fine, very smooth and slick. Spacious cabin, spacious boot. Yes smaller than Mondeo, but not noticably.

I drove Insignia 2.0 Diesel with manual gearbox and I was disappointed mainly because of the terrible gearbox and heavy and high clutch. After that I drove Insignia wit 1.5 petrol with 165 hp. The impression was vise versa. I liked the car very much. It was comfortable, with enough torque and very comfortable. My advice is stick to the automatic gearbox. It makes big difference in the impression of the car.

Being a current owner of an Insignia myself, I think the new Insignia Grand Sport is more about design aesthetics than functionality and practicality of a family car. I mean for example, the head room is still very bad in the back compared to the older Insignia (with the exception of the Sports Tourer). Why hasn't Opel corrected this design flaw yet? Another example of making the car look better than making it more comfortable for passengers. The 1.5T engine is nice, but it should be the lowest engine size and not the main engine for this class of car. The 1.6T with 200 HP In the Astra K is the best engine for this car, because the 1.5T lacks the torque for overtaking. 200 lb ft of torque should be minimum for this size of car. Also, the 20 inch alloys are ridiculous for the higher spec models with the 2.0T 260 engine. Why do you need alloys so big? This surely means the ride will be too firm and the risk of damaging the alloys by curbing becomes greater. Also, why no electric or hybrid options for this supposedly upmarket car? Opel clearly has a long way to go before they can compete with the class leaders.

My Vectra C had a bad switching gear box from factory, Opel never managed to fix that on my car. I would never buy an Opel again no matter how good it looks. I had so many issues with the Vectra, which in many cases had been caused by bad engineering or bad quality materials...also the previous Insignia had a bad reliability statistic compared to other mid sized cars.

It's damn near 5 meters long.

So what? In western countries Opel Ascona (Vauxhall Cavalier in the UK) was normal mid-sized saloon/hatchback/cabrio (in UK also estate) car. No real strong points neither weak points. Ascona and Cavalier was popular between reps (sales representatives) because it looked good, drove well and could hold its own in the outside lane on highway. One feature which Ascona/Cavalier has and other car don't have - ease of serviceability(you can change clutch without removing gearbox, hydraulic tappets, self adjusting rear brakes, etc ) Of course lithuanians who yesterday changed their car from AZLK 412 to secondhand VW Jetta 1.6 know better.
