  • This part of October can offer a few opportunities for mature bucks When cold fronts pass through, but it is nothing like the real pre-rut build-up that starts in two weeks. Our team went out and tested the cold front action to see what an early October front can bring. As they go through their hunts, they introduce their seasons and get the ball rolling for later hunts as the action increases. Every week should keep getting better for at least another month. Good luck.

    As a hunter and fellow Michigander I congratulate Alex Rewa on his deer. As a runner I congratulate Jordan on her PR. Chicago Marathon was run on the same day as Jordan's 5k. A world record was set by 34 seconds in the marathon and Jordan smashed her PR by 37 seconds to compare how dominant of a performance she had.

    Had an unfortunate situation on Ohio public land Saturday. I pushed past really good sign thinking pressure would have driven the mature bucks deeper into the area. Walking out I jumped a really nice 4, possibly 5 year old within 100 yards of the parking lot where he was transitioning between bedding and food with a few minutes of legal shooting light left. Luckily, it was only a light spook and he lightly hopped away. Not sure when I will get to head back out that way, but I am going to be a little more careful just pushing deep into public thinking it's already been pressured given it's proximity to roads/parking. Might just be one of those overlooked spots people make the same mistake I did.

      My preference is between about 18 and 22 feet. I usually just setup where there is a major branch or fork to break up my outline. When I hunt alone without a camera man I always try to setup on the back of the tree so I can hide behind the trunk when deer are close. Only downside is that you have to stand most of the time.

    Jake at the hunting public killed a huge deer on public land by pushing into the bedding area. There were zero tracks in the area. Catching the biggest buck before he thinks people are in the woods. I understand it's public land. Dan Infault killed a huge deer last year doing the same thing.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  Рік тому

      Yes, that is good input. I think hunting public land that makes more sense than when hunting private land. There is risk in that strategy of hunting the bedding areas this time of the year. Maybe I err toward being cautious, but it has worked for me in the long run over the many years I have hunted them. Good luck.
