Well done my man! The more of these up the better. I absolutely love this stuff. Will go through this with a fine tooth comb and try to give you some further feedback. OnSong is beyond awesome for midi control with gear. Good job mate.
I typically place my songs into a set list. I use a Roland GR-55 and an HX Stomp. I was able to go through each song in the set and program midi to change patches on each device (using different channels). This was very helpful in making transitions smoother. I was totally surprised and disappointed to find that all the programming was NOT attached to the song itself but rather only to that song within that set. Have you found a a way to attach programs to the raw song so when you place it in a different set the midi programming goes with it?
I just created a new set in OnSong, added a song from the master list (all songs), added midi to both the metadata and within the song itself. Then went into a different set an added that same song again. All the midi information followed. Might be a bug at your end?
@@jackandelman - Thanks so much for your reply. The issue may very well have been a bug. Oddly, I cannot re-create it now. I've been working around the issue (or at least I thought I was) by duplicating the set with all midi in place. This worked well so I never took the time to go back and try it again until now. I just tried creating a set from scratch and added songs with midi attached. Worked as designed. I was surprised to learn from your reply that when you attach midi (for ex) to the title of the song it's not automatically recorded in the meta data (accessed by 'edit' then 'Song Info'). I'm trying to imagine how one might use those 2 different places to call different (or the same?) midi commands. Seems like it would (or certainly could) be confusing. Another scenario I'm trying to set up is to play a short sound file (10 seconds of a percussion wind chime on the intro of Josie) when I touch a sticky note. I'm able to get to the midi command section but can't figure out how to play the MP3. My work around at this point is to place the MP3 in the OnSong Audio Library, add the MP3 as if it was a backing track and press the 'play' button at the count off. Not elegant but works. :) The sticky note would be a larger target - lol
Thank you for informative Vid. One question that no one seems to have an answer for is...What if I do not want my program to change when new a song is loaded onto Onsong screen, but only change on my device when my Bluetooth switch is pushed to start the backing track? cheers :)
I’m not sure I understand your question. You want to advance to the next song, start the backing track, and only then have the helix change the preset? If that’s the case, I would never start a song without confirming my helix is on the correct preset, but if that’s what you want to do I suppose you could insert midi information into the first portion of the song instead of the title metadata.
@@jackandelman Cheers for the quick reply Jack. That's where I am having the problem, as I can't seem to insert midi information into the start section of the song. It only seems to attach itself to the meta data. The reason I do not want it to change straight away when song is loaded is because I may still be playing the outro of the song before & the band leader brings up the next tune (so we know what we are into next) & my patch will change. It works well for us having the next song up in front of us but won't help if my patch changes. I just bang my patches on with my sticker notes from Onsong at the moment but the nerd part of me would like to find a solution -ha ha. Thanx
@@jasonalexander5253 OK I could see that scenario making sense. If it’s not in the first video you watched the other couple videos get into automation and changing snapshots based on where you are in the song. So the short version is I would watch the other videos, of course :-) The longer version is you could long press verse one or the first stanza of your song and it should give you an option to enter midi data right there. So if you were automating the song the midi information would hit once it reached that verse or stanza. Otherwise you could always tap that verse or stanza which should trigger the midi as well.
Thank you for best Video. I play a Kemper. Can I change the sound in the Kemper using Onsong via MIDI? e.g. Verse clean sound on bank 1 Chorus clean sound with flanger bank 2 - Solo crunch sound bank 3. Can you explain that to me again or is there a video about it? What adapter and connection do I need for that? Thank you for your answer and your help
@@Gxgras1 sorry but I don’t know anything about Kempers. I’m guessing you’ll be able to do it in a similar fashion, but cannot offer any specifics. Good luck.
Connecting the iPad to the Helix is a little confusing. The iPad connects to the camera connector, USB cable out to the Helix, what type of USB connector do you plug into the Helix and where do you connect it.
camera connector plugs into ipad usb cable plugs into camera connector other end of usb cable plugs into helix technically, the helix input is a "type b" usb port. my camera connector is the normal "type a" usb port. I'm assuming most are. so you need a A/B usb cable. google "usb ports" and you see what they look like.
This is a great idea and seems pretty easy. That will take some pressure off at gigs finding the right preset for the next song 😎👍
you, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar
Ive been called worse 🤘

thanks man! just posted to the group. will have a couple more. pretty proud of myself for figuring this stuff out lol.
Thanks for this! Very helpful?

@@jackandelman So your not using the MIDI connection on the Helix, your getting MIDI signal from the USB connection. Nice video
Any idea if this would work with playing tracks in Ableton?
not familiar with ableton but I imagine so. midi is midi.
@@jackandelman got it working used note instead of programme change - and also realised you needed to upgrade your subscription!
