    Never met anyone who flew the 10 that didnt absolutely LOVE the airplane. Been flying turbojets for 30 years.

      The 10 is a great aircraft, it got a kick in the crotch from some mechanics that didn't follow the instructions. I am confident it has the largest most comfortable cockpit in the industry.

    This aircraft will be here in Australia in a few weeks time for our fire season. It will have a few extra stickers added and be given the nickname Southern Belle. It will work out of an Airforce Base west of Sydney with a C130 from Coulson that is already here nicknamed Thor

    Was the guy lost? All I saw was a plane flying around in circles. Did I miss the part where they drop the water?

    • @wcolby
      @wcolby  8 років тому +4

      The aircraft does a practice pass then drops the "water" , there were two planes & both water drops were obscured by smoke.

    • @PatKittle
      @PatKittle 6 років тому +3

      Allow me to clear up a common misunderstanding -- fire-fighting planes don't actually drop water.
      By flying around the fire, they consume oxygen which starves the fire.

    • @ralphaverill2001
      @ralphaverill2001 6 років тому +4

      Uh, no. The planes do drop water and fire retardant. A hundred planes buzzing around the fire could not consume enough oxygen to starve the fire.

      Often times the the lead plane will give the bomber a show me pass. To verify all are understanding the line of drop and make sure most effective use of the pass.

      Complaint, smaller air tankers fly in circles around the fires. Typically there is also an Air attack flying in circles above the fire as well, he is in charge of the aircraft. Large tankers such as the 747 and DC10s require a lead plane and will mark where they want the drop using white smoke out of the back of the plane.
      Air tankers also typically do a practice run too, this is especially true when you have a fire in rugged terrain.

    How come there's not many DC-10s or MD-11s anymore??? I Love the tail engine design.

    • @wcolby
      @wcolby  7 років тому +2

      I think the DC10 wasn't super popular with the flying public because it had some crashes and incidents that made the flying public weary of it. So, Fed Ex got them at a great price because the public didn't like them. Even though it was an exceptionally successful aircraft design, the air force uses it as a tanker. the three engine design was a hold over for international routes, Now engines are so reliable that a twin engine 777 can cross the Pacific ocean without concern of engine failure. Thats just my personal opinion.

      DC-10s burn too much fuel compared with a 757 or 767.

    • @zorroalphonso4354
      @zorroalphonso4354 6 років тому

      Because trijets are costly to operate, with low seating capacity like the DC10/MD11. Only very large planes have more than two engines, like the Boeing 747 and Airbus 380.
