  • So this isn't much of an update, but on Sunday, April 7th, I took the kendo 1 kyu test here in Kumamoto and I passed. I made many mistakes during my match, but I am still determined to get better.
    After the testing was all said and done I had a few hours of free time before I had to meet with my kendo teacher to hear about all the mistakes I made and to start preparing for shodan.
    At any rate, if you compare this to my previous kendo video I posted, I have improved some. I am happy for that.

    Yes. It's called "kiai". It shows your spirit and energy. When you practice kendo you are supposed to yell what you are hitting at the exact moment you hit the other person, while stomping your right foot as you do so. They are all supposed to occur at the same time. In this video I am not demonstrating it very well, though. Heh.

    Try to relax more and enjoy (feel) every cut you do. Don't worry about speed, it'll comes along the way. And.. perhaps we can cross shinai someday :D

    The kata you see there is the kihon kendo waza kata. It is different from the kata you learn for shodan and so on. We must perform all 9 kata for 1 kyu. You wan see them here: watch?v=aj6V_sT2dnQ
    For shodan I will have to perform kendo kata 1-3.

    I don't think I've ever seen Kendo Kihon Keiko Ho as part of a Grading before. Where is this??

    Don't call that kata. That is Bokuto Ni Yoru Kendo Kihon-waza Keiko-ho. Good luck with your Shodan Shinsa!

      Congratulations! :D I've been thinking to join a kendo club lately but I'm stil a bit nervous and anxious regarding the exams and the dojo environment. Since it's a competitive activity I'm concerned if it's not a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

      It's competitive in a way, but people at the dojo are super welcoming. The people I've met through kendo are normally the best types of friends I've ever been able to make. Exams are very professionally done -- but as are all exams and tests no matter whether it's for school or for your driver's test. Dojos are a welcoming place -- but you have to understand that kendo dojos are used to people getting hyped up by anime or movies and people jumping into the dojo hoping to be able to be as cool as Kenshin or Tom Cruise with The Last Samurai only to find out that takes years and years and YEARS of hard work to get good and practiced in this sport.

      Kerenzie I understand that. Generally I hate formalised exams but that is something I can work through. Recently, I went with a friend who is an Aikidoka to try out one class of Aikido with him and personally I have to say that I loved the environment. It felt really reassuring and welcoming, which made me feel "at home" and confident in myself, unlike when I was a kid and practised Karate, a much more competitive sport. We could say that is because this time the class was with grown adults and not with children but I guess it's understandable if I still feel insecure regarding the kendo dojo environment. I guess I have to try out and see for myself. Also, I understand the hype that could go on among younger lads regarding anime and alikes, but I'm not too worried with that as long as people are friendly, humble and ready to help :)

      We all start somewhere. I was pretty new to kendo in this video and there were a lot of mistakes made. This was testing for 1kyu -- not even a dan level.

    Is it a requirement to yell?

    • @TheSplashRider
      @TheSplashRider 8 років тому +3

      Yes its a part of ki ken tai ichi , and it give you a better Cut , because if you make the kiai you exhale and tense the muscles. You have more power and you show that the hit was not a lucky hit
      PS Sry for my English
