- This is a continuation of my video Beefed up oscillators on the Serge Modular - Part 1, on this same channel. • Beefed up oscillators ...
This time the tool I am using to do the "beefing up" is the SSG, the Smooth and Stepped Generator of the Serge.
The first patch shown requires putting both sides of the SSG into self-oscillating mode, by connecting OUT to CYCLE, or activating the CYCLE switch. EXPO on both sides is set to neutral. The STEPPED side is activated by clocking the SAMPLE input with the COUPLER output of the SSG itself, which is a comparator across both sides of the module. This causes the "oscillator" to phase. The pitch is controlled by the RATE knob of the Smooth Generator. The further apart the two RATE frequencies are from one another, the more gritty and unpredictable the phasing effect.
The second patch is astounding in its simplicity, being a simple patch from output of the cycling SSG's HOT coupler output. (On the old Serge, the standard COUPLER works just fine.) The HOT is connected to the SYNC input of a NTO oscillator, to sync it harder than a standard oscillator would do. Now, the sweeping oscillator frequency works as a timbral sweep, not a pitch sweep, with a richer sound than a filter, but different from the classic Serge waveshaper modification. The last effect I show is to go back to the phasing version of the SSG, which makes the SYNC effect on the NTO much more unstable and bubbly.
Enjoy experimenting with Serge timbral modulation! (For "audiophiles", sorry that the video is rather more heavily compressed than I had hoped!)
Excellent video. Very informative.
Thanks!
You rock!
Thanks, Petri!
This is whole new world for me. Intresting.
Super interesting and informative. Thank you.
Thank you for following!
Amazing!
Tried this on my Serge, but, for some (yet) unknown reason, the coupler output doesnt do anything if I patch it to the sample input of the stepped side…
Love these videos- what beautiful timbres!
Would you consider doing a comparison between the R*S Serge wave multipliers module and the triple waveshaper?
super cool! can you tell us where to get those modules? and do you have a list of what your using? thanks
On this synth, the TKB sequencer, noise/random and dc and ac mixers are made by ARC, and I bought them from Schneidersladen, Berlin. The Random*Source modules were mainly bought as kits from Thonk, London, but the same modules are available ready-built from several dealers. There are 3 non-Serge modules in the system, because Serge does not have a suitable MIDI interface, nor a LFO/VCO like it used to have the Precision Controlled Oscillator. This is a terrible pity, but I put a cheap Ladik VCO4 oscillator in the rack, so that I would have an extra vco/lfo/clock.
