Encaustic Tools: What You ACTUALLY Need

Getting started with encaustic painting can be quite intimidating, but I hope with this series to make it a little less daunting. Awesome tips, just what I needed today! I have all the tools that you mentioned except for the stylus, which I have been trying to decide which one. The problem is that I have it all but am afraid to start, not one drop of melted wax! Hopefully this week! Thanks for popping in with this short tutorial.

Getting started really is the hardest part. I know exactly what you mean. Just start small, and don't put pressure on yourself to actually create a piece. Just practice!

I use Topex soldering station which works with wood burning knife tip just like a paint brush medium size. The Ozito wood burning tips have this tip in it. I use it without the shank and it is brilliant. No need to have melted wax. The Topex works from 200 degrees and no smoke. Hope this tip helps.

Thank you! Great tips. Question....I am using rf medium. Is there such a thing as clear wax??? Mine is very milky

It can be really tough to get a clear wax. It's never going to be clear the way resin is clear. There will always be an element of cloudiness to it. But the ratio of wax to damar can make difference. Do you know what ratio it is you are using? Higher resin ratios can make the medium a little clearer.

I know in several of your videos you use tar. What kind of tar do you use? Is it something like Henry Wet Patch?
