Mad Dog I play oboe and clarinet, so I’m fairly familiar with the flute, and I’m half proud that there is another band geek besides taehyung and half rolling on the floor dying because of how confident he was at first.
He had the right fingering too! They gave him an open hole flute and wondered why he couldn't play. Poor thing... (from a fellow flute player)

Well believe it or not, quite some men can do whistle registers. I can do that too, but I’m a tenor so it’s a little easier I suppose. But being a baritone and hitting whistle register like Jaehyun is truly impressive

As a flutist, Mark did nothing wrong when he was playing! Because he only played in elementary school and middle school, he probably played a student flute, which doesn't need you to cover the entire button. But the flute they gave him was a holed flute, which produces better sound, but is much harder to play since you need to cover the entire button to get any good sound out.
The note he was playing WAS a D based on the fingering, but he just wasn't covering the entire button.
