Pretty wild that even after 10 years, they can still put out music that you can reasonably argue is the best they've ever done.
Then again, this expansion gave us the banger of track that is "Smile"...

I... this map is so full of nostalgia as someone who played ff9 as my first ever final fantasy? yep.. definitely a good slap of nostalgia :(

As a FF9 fangirl, I cried
Man, the first half of Dawntrail has glaring issues, but everything regarding Alexandria and Queen Sphene’s reasons are great.

FFIX was the first game I bought with my own money as a child, and it holds a special place in my heart. It ignited my lifelong love of the fantasy genre, it shaped my taste in media, it even led me into my current career in the long run. Even after all the FFIX references and revisions up to this point, seeing Alexandria Castle in all its glory appear on the Duty screen like this just hit so different. FFXIV is a celebration of the series in every sense of the word, constantly taking its favourite parts of the entire series and reshaping them into fitting into the same canon so naturally. This game is as special to me as IX was when I played through it for the first time as a child.
So saw the orchestrion drop from this dungeon last night on a roulette and its called "A Trail Unending". So for anyone who was wanting the name hope this helps.
I was so lucky to get the song from this dungeon on my first clear with the Trust

I fell in love with the coolness of the nameless soldier who risked his life for Sphene in the second area. Even now, that scene, combined with the BGM, still stimulates my lachrymal glands.
I love that while royalty usually is safe in the castle, Sphere was out there in the midst of the danger saving every person she could find
Pretty sure it wasnt a nameless soldier. It was Otis(I believe thats his name). You can tell from the voice after she dies as its his voice. He failed to save her, just like the robot Otis says.
@@mewpleOtis “died” when his soul was extracted for the Endless experiments. He stated he was an old man before extraction, can’t really be in the field.
@@dracomeister7684 Otis died after the princess did when they were doing experiments testing to see if they could even create the endless. This was after Sphene died. Otis gave his life so they could perfect the process and save Sphene.
@@dracomeister7684 As @mewple said, Otis died much later after princess died, and I'm sure from his voice, both Eng/JP, that was him. He was still alive at the time Sphene death, and later choose to sacrifice himself for experiment.
i love their story telling format where they give final dungeon before the final Trial full of emotion. this gives me feeling as Amaurot and The Dead Ends.
Right up through 4.0 the final zones and dungeons were never really that impressive. But ever since Shadowbringers, they've just knocked every final zone out of the park.
The pattern of building a musical leitmotif through the final expansion region, then delivering an up-tempo version for the dungeon, is by now very predictable, but even knowing that, it works so well.
The queen that was a martyr for her people, and the whole realm working to bring her back. In some ways Sphene’s story parallels the Warrior of Light’s death during the eighth umbral calamity that G’raha Tia worked so hard to undo
I am of the same mindset when it comes to this and I feel that it isn't just a coincidence. I am very excited with the future of the story.
its what he brings up in the Gondola. He sympathizes with her because he did very much whatever he could to bring one person back.
He seemed to be morally the most torn on ending the Endless
That… makes me even more interested in the 7.3 trial thinking on considering we still don’t know why the Key reacted to the Crystal of Azem. Whether or not it copied the magicks or some such is still left purposely a mystery for now…
@@Traten65also, if you read some of the shadowbringers side stories, it really puts it into perspective:
everyone on the 8th umbral calamity timeline had no idea what will happen once they alter the future and send him and the crystal tower away. they have no idea if their timeline and their lived are just going to be erased, because they aren’t sure about the effects of time travel, and yet they’re willing to sacrifice that to save another timeline.
G’raha had to bear the burden of potentially sacrificing everyone he knew in that timeline and erasing all they did to save another timeline, and while he can probably assume they didn’t all get erased since he wasn’t after averting the calamity, he still has to bear the thought of that world without the crystal tower (as he would be unaware that Midgardsormr awakened immediately after he left)

I have a more sinister take about the 8th UC ironworks. It's good of them to be okay with being sacrificed. But what about other people who're against the project? Or worse, those who live outside of eorzea, who probably don't get hit that hard by the black rose and don't even know about the project. Or those who choose to "forge ahead" and continued on with their lives, however shitty it is.
The ironworks decided to gamble those people's very existence without any consent.

this is the pick-up you need from the heartbreak of Living Memory. It even starts with the same theme but slowly pumps up and then finally unleashes the most uplifing musical part of the whole expansion. you're being comforted before told "let's say goodbye and finish this", as though all the voices of encouragement in ultima thule were orchestrated
My initial reaction to hearing that the Kingdom that appeared was called Alexandria was something along the lines of, "They're really teasing the IX fanbase."
Then when they force you to look over the ruins, it took me a second for it to click, but when it did, It was a very sad "Oh."

This song, this dungeon... they really pulled at my heartstrings with this one.
I have never felt more of a "Lets finish this" theme in FFXIV than this.

i really like this part 1:43 from the launch trailer and almost cried for how good the whole track is.
Every single dungeon, trial(not you zoraal ja) and raid theme this expansion so far have been perfection. Now if only the dawntrail motif wasnt used so frequently this expansion cause the part they use is SUPER NOTICABLE every time
I think even the motif in this one and associated with Alexandria is prolly best one we got yet since Ishgard's motifs cuz it just beats so hard u get goosebumps whenever u hear it even if its used too often
Truly gorgeous, it's like walking back in memory line. To walk in Alexandria again is truly blissful and bittersweet closing. Makes you think where has time fly. Final Fantasy 9 will always have a special place in my heart and memories.

FFXIV has been my favorite FF in the series since i started back on the nes/snes and a lot of that is because they pay such beautiful homage to older games while also bringing up amazing new og stories and music. This expansion was yet another fine addition imho (don't care about the hate thrown around, what we like is subjective!).

Something sad but beautiful with this song. Seeing the dungeon turn from bright and cheerful to slowly becoming a destroyed ruins is gut wrenching.
With sphere and the villagers speaking in the background, it really brings the emotional drama to what is happening.

I had chills when I first saw this dungeon. The FF9 fangirl in me was all "No way. There's no way they did this... this is awesome! But also so sad" a complete emotional mess lmao. I couldn't even properly play my first run, I could only worry about group posing everywhere haha

On one hand I was super upset we didn't get an FF9 track remixed for this dungeon, on the other hand I love this track.
Second the thought that this is the best song of this OST.
Soken is a wonderful composer, and his themes can be epic and sweeping. I love his work with 14 and 16. What he lacks in comparison to Uematsu is making the music feel "personal", to convey not just the grandiosity of the piece but the personal connection with the player. This piece breaks this mold, by directly conveying emotion through the crescendo. This, this was the point where I was crying ugly tears this one time on this expansion, and the music paired with the familiar yet unfamiliar Alexandria is the reason. Wonderful job, and I hope he continues on like this to become a true successor to Nobuo!

Honestly I think there's way more personal songs he's done I think you just happen to be connected to this one
I think Alexandria as a set peice was the only time I choked up, the mix of music and watching them struggle was pretty powerful despite such little spoken words. It was the only dungeon I did alone because I saw a 30 min queue and wasl ike nah bro, but I am glad I did be cause I really got to take in all of it. But it wasn't even a sad choke up, it was more a prideful one, it had an energy to it.
It is one of the most well directed peices of content in the game, when you add the music there is a sense of hope admist the death and adversity. If this dungeon existed before we did the majority of the last zone I might of felt a deeper connection to Alexandrias people.
So this is where those FFIX remake rumors are all coming from...

Well, no. Sadly.
Nope, the leak came from an Nvidia leak which leaked many games not only from Square Enix including Kingdom Hearts 4 before it was announced. The Epic Games store also had an update recently that accidentally leaked a preorder bonus for Tetra master cards and a dagger set which isn't in the original FF9, so a remake is basically confirmed. Dawntrail is just another love letter to FF9, there's been a lot recently. Steiner and Vivi were in the Chocobo racing game along with an Alexandria stage, they announced a Final Fantasy 9 Animated Series which we have not received a trailer for yet, and Cloud and Tifa got FF9 costumes in Ever Crisis. I feel like there's more FF9 stuff that's happened recently, but yeah buckle up an FF9 remake is definitely on the way.
"Much about the key remains shrouded in mystery...." "I will be the next dawn servant, and I will protect my people til the last!" Man, this song is SO good, I got goosebumps when I loaded into the dungeon and heard it, I'd been waiting for it to show up.

It was likely an Ascian plot. Like how it was Elidibus' idea to kill Igyorhm and unleash the flood of light after tilting the world's aetheric balance wayy over into light.
As an FFIX fanboy, it truly saddened me to see what came of Alexandria. Assuming this is the world of Gaia many years in the future from when IX took place, and Sphene is Garnet's descendant, it's not the happy ending I was expecting.
Garnet would surely know how to educate her children and other descendants better than this. I'd much rather take the whole Alexandria drama in XIV for what it truly is - not canon (in FF9)
It's probably just one out of many possible realities.
None of the easter egg/cameo/allusions in XIV are specifically from those games. This isn't the Alexandria from IX, just a reference.
Spehne's arc more relates to Brahne even thought her outfit is a reference to Garnet's. Brahne wasn't always evil, she became broken after experience loss. Kuja took advantage of this desperation, the same way Zoraal Ja provided the key to Sphene in order to direct them to merge with Tuliyolal.

I think this is a strong hint that ff9 remake is indeed in the works and the rumours are true, given the amount of fan service ff9 had this expansion. Not just this dungeon but one of the endgame dungeons also. Plus the preorder bonus items as well. I think they are trying to get more people who never played ff9 on the hype train for it, and this is one of the best ways they could have done it.
I don’t why know but this invokes a Zanarkland feeling from me.
Despite being named Alexandria, it is definitely more of a Zanarkand reference.

My face during the whole dungeon was like this --> :O because I couldn't believe everything was so beautiful plus the music. If only the whole MSQ was at this levels of quality of storytelling by showing not by "talk to wuk lamat 10000 times".
The only 2 bro for me in this extension are Otis and the pilot who used his badass aircraft shield and sacrifice itself in this dungeons

I honestly thought we could've save Sphene with Dynamis. I thought it was an alternative energy source outside of aether that they could use. And its more abundant than aether since the aether was near life while dynamis was all over.
I think it mention that it need life force to sustain them, normal aether won't work. SO Dynamis which is energy of emotion while can influence the life itself, it's not exactly a life force so I don't think it'd work. But that's just me.
It's a form of energy only Meteion could use anytime she wanted. The WoL can only use it during Limit Break 3. Other than that, there has been no instance of use using Dynamis or manipulating it by simple will.
The main problem wasn't even the energy source, the point was holding on to memories is not good and you need to let go.

No, I want the FF14 to still be FF14. As much as I hated DT when it came out for not delivering the FF9 that I was promised, I've come to realize I am playing FF14 because I love it. If I want to play thru an og game, I can go play that.

@@leighg9o Disagree, he's definitely noticeably better at orchestral stuff but not that significantly, FF14 has such a unique soundtrack BECAUSE Soken (and his team, don't forget, it's not just him who composes, idk if this song is even him tbh) is always consistently atleast good at pretty much any genre they try, and they're not afraid of trying it. It's just a bit reductive to pin it all on 1 guy and say that he's bad at song genres that you're probably just not a fan of. Personal preference =/= objective quality.
I like this song even if the zone and story sucked. (It's a bunch of AI constructs in the cloud, that are powered by stealing people's souls and destroying the environment of other worlds. Good thing we ended it, but there is nothing redeemable about Sphene or the Endless.)

If you cared about not being spoiled, you'd eliminate the areas where you could potentially be spoiled. Content creators are not restricted because of people's inability to abstain from information

I got through DT with no spoilers because I didn't spend all my time on UA-cam/reddit tempting the algorithm to give me something I didn't want to see. I wish Garlemald got such a dungeon, showing their struggle, constant forced migrations further north, eventually Solus rising up and Garlemald instead taking it all woth force and than the eventual downfall.
