At the 1:34 mark when George VI pours wisdom, insight and innerstanding into Philip and when George VI looks into the air holding his gun in the boat duck hunting that scene absolutely blew my mind because he knew he was dying - the strength and the courage of this great man and leader of a great nation! We don’t have leaders like George VI today.
King George VI may not have wanted the crown, but he did not try to avoid his duty when it was thrust upon him. He faced the challenges it brought without complaint and became one of the most noble, honourable, and beloved princes of all time. He fearlessly led his people through the most destructive conflict in human history and showed the world, with gentle dignity and unfailing grace, what it meant to be British. He embodied, in my mind, all the finest and most dignified qualities of monarchy. Truly, he will always be remembered as one of the greatest in all of Britain’s long and glorious history. Even Woody.EXE never wanted it but he eventually agreed to duty last September 7th on the day 1940 commentated its 82nd birthday. Little did Wales know that Woody.EXE would start his reign 24 hours later and then Queen Elizabeth died. Then I almost died 6 months after the Queen died herself; it was a difficult 20 months for Woody.EXE after losing Queen Elizabeth II and then me his own Queen not long after. When George VI became king thankfully his 2 brothers George and Henry along with sister Mary were a huge support. They all stepped up and did their duty and didn’t abandon their country like Edward did. He truly was a selfish man who thought of no one but himself.
I once read that Hitler had intended to put Edward back on the throne as a puppet king if he'd conquered the British Isles. If that's true, what would've been done to him if Britain had been liberated and he'd been taken into custody? Wasn't William "Lord Haw Haw" Joyce hanged for less than that?
@@Arbeedubya That's part of the Marburg files and they're real not just fiction made up in the Crown they got that right. The Duke Windsor did that "unofficial state visit" without permission from the government and the royal family. All this "he was niave" business is bollocks because tensions were running high between Germany, Britain and the rest of Europe when his father was on the throne and the Duke would know that but he went ahead with that visit anyway. When France fell he and Wallis fled to a friend who was a known Nazi sympathiser and had to be threatend with a court martial off the British government to leave and go to the Bahamas and badically rule and he moaned about that despite living in luxury and beautiful weather whilst Britain was being bombed to pieces and living on rations he was a very selfish and self indulfed child who never grew up

I love this idea! They could have a wonderful series starting with 18 year old Queen Victoria in 1838 and connecting it to the point of her great grandson and Elizabeth's father, King George VI. She had a few famous grandchildren that you could talk about. I mean you have Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, the last Empress of Russia Alexandra, not to mention Britain's WWI King George V.
Jared Harris is my favorite actor among several stellar casts in The Crown. Good acting is about so much more than the lines spoken. But then with a father like Richard Harris, you wouldn't expect him to be mediocre.
@@whay2082 YESSS. THE TERROR. Definitely one of his best performances ever. I am satisfied watching that and Chernobyl on loop for months (totallyyy not speaking from experience there lol). In order to receive an Oscar he will have to make a theatrical film and be nominated for it. He cannot receive an Oscar for the Crown because it is a television film. He could receive an Emmy for it however, since it was made for television.
Four people who lived a relatively quiet life as members of the Royal Family, trying to be as normal as possible. Then one day, they were thrust front and centre. Then for the best part of 90 years, they looked over us.
Ironically, Edward’s abdication likely saved the monarchy. It was the combined strength of George VI and Churchill that inspired Britain in the darkest times. Edward would have been disastrous as a leader in WW2.
The man and the girl who were never meant to rule, ruled greater then anyone ever had or ever will. I know damn well Elizabeth missed her father for so long, and now she gets to be with him again.
When I think of His Majesty King George V1 I think of something Douglas MacArthur once said "Duty, Honour, Country" - those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying point to build courage when courage seems to fail, to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith, to create hope when hope becomes forlorn". During the dark days of 1940-41 no one except perhaps Churchill, displayed those qualities MacArthur was talking about, and set an example for others to follow.
You should watch the movie The King's Speech. It's about how King George VI tries to overcome his stammering problem. Great movie, got some Oscars including Best Picture
I saw a picture of His Majesty when he saw hid daughter and son in law off on their tour and I feel that he knew that he would not see her alive again. The last commenters were right when they commented that while he was meant to be king (thanks to his brother listening to his “other brain”) he did a good job leading the UK through some of its darkest days.
George VI. In all our long history, our most beloved. The last great king. Father of Elizabeth the Great. The world may have moved on, the time for all this may be drawing to a close, but we shall never forget. ❤
If there is a prequel, it should be about the life of Mary of Teck. What a life she lived! She was born into a minor royal family, betrothed to an heir to another throne, lost her fiancee, married his brother, was the mother to two kings, lived through two world wars, and survived long enough to see her granddaughter become Queen. It could be divided into three segments like THE CROWN: the years prior to becoming Queen (pre-1910), her time as Queen, (1910-1936), and until her passing (1936-1953). It would be the perfect bridge between VICTORIA and THE CROWN.
I would watch something like that! It would be worth it just to see her mistreatment of her own children, especially Bertie, given the way SHE was bullied as a teenager. The Edwardian era also fascinates me. Thanks to old Vickie refusing to train him properly or gradually give him responsibilities in the affairs of State, everyone thought he was going to be a flop as King. However, he surprised many people and was not only well liked as he was affable, but he was rather good at diplomacy and foreign affairs. He DID manage to stave off World War I when he was alive.
@@retroguy9494 It’s very interesting that Edward VII was the last British monarch to still have substantial personal political power before Parliament took them away, and he was arguably the last British monarch who enjoyed the “job” instead of taking it as a duty & burden.
A masterful recreation of the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha Dynasty and their evolution to the Windsors. Any serious student of British history should put this on their much watch list. That aside, it's just a damn good rollicking tale!
I'm still trying to figure out where I can watch it for FREE! LOL! The series fascinates me. One has to cheer the old Queen for preserving the House of Windsor after Lord Mountbatten had concocted that plan to make a House of Mountbatten! She sure put her foot down on that one.
He do be 50/50 on him, though Charles mismanaged his family, he has not put a foot wrong in terms of being Prince of Wales. Charles has brought billions into UK by working to revive BMW, he was one of people that were part of bringing BMW back into relevancy. Charles has also done several other business and political decisions, he purposed Brexit right after dissolvement of USSR, he was way ahead of his time in terms of politics.
Well, I'm only a Yank from the States, but from my knowledge of him, had King George lived as long as his wife, I think he would have disapproved of Charles' marriage to Diana. Here is a man who had doubts about his own daughters future husband and even took her on a trip around the world to separate them for a while. Charles made a bad marriage. Even us commoners here in the Colonies can do THAT! But from all appearances, Charles loves his sons and tried at least to become a good father. Whatever Harry became, I think, had a lot to do with his mother's death and one cannot blame Charles for that. But Wills turned out fine and most people agree he will make a FINE king one day. King George said that you need the right person by your side. I think Charles now HAS that person. Were he to come back today, I think, good man that he was, that King George would acknowledge a grave error in choice but say in the end, Charles did the correct thing.
@@retroguy9494 Charles was forced to marry Diana by his family. They wanted an heir, and Charles was getting older. Plus he wanted to marry someone unsuitable and also getting old. So poor Diana was used, then thrown away when she had served her purpose. Charles does not deserve to be king.

Queen Mary who had been engaged to marry Prince Albert, married George instead.

This video is wonderful, I love Jared Harris and his portrayal of King George VI. Part of me wishes that the creators of The Crown would make a limited prequel series about his rule. Just like..one season, maybe 6 episodes, let Jared Harris have more time with that role. This video also made me think about King George's brother, David (the King that abdicated for the woman he loved, Wallis Simpson). It made me think about how I want to commend the show because its really good at making you 'feel' for David even tho he's snotty and has little quips about everyone. But the couple seemed to truly love each other and was one of the few, in the royal family, that did NOT divorce so....heh. But then the show is suddenly all... "OH BTW, TOTAL NAZI SYMPATHIZER, WAS TOTALLY GOING TO SELL OUT HIS BROTHER FOR THE CROWN LOL" lol. Well done, The Crown.

At least there seems to be flashback scenes of him beyond the first two episodes of season one. I was so worried that it was all I was gonna see of him.
George VI died because he smoked too much. Now, the stress of his brother's antics forcing him into the spotlight certainly didn't help, but even before that, he was a chain-smoker. Even after having to get one of his lungs removed, he smoked like a chimney until it finally killed him.

Well hold up there just a minute there dude. First off, both Bertie and David had cancer, one of the lung and the other of the throat. However I think the added stress of being unprepared and thrust into the role of King really contributed to Bertie's death at an earlier age. He was weak (in the physical sense) and got old before his time Regarding Churchill, he was a cigar smoker and, like MOST cigar smokers, do not inhale like cigarette smokers do. As a general rule, cigar and pipe smokers live much longer than cigarette smokers. I used to smoke cigarettes myself as well as a pipe and the occasional cigar. When I quit, a couple of my doctors told me it was okay to smoke my pipe as long as I didn't inhale. In fact, a recent study shows that pipe smokers actually live LONGER than non smokers. Because 1) a LITTLE bit of nicotine is actually good for you (just like alcohol) and 2) pipe smokers are generally more relaxed.
Yes I quite agree I went onto a pipe Then gave it up However I'm wary of going back To it tobacco rather expensive Still when I become more financial Who knows!
@@angloaust1575 Well, here in the United States, pipe tobacco is still a lot cheaper than cigarettes. When I quit 6 years ago, cigarettes were around $70 a carton and now they are around $100 and I used to go through 5 cartons a month. Currently, I go through about 2 pounds of pipe tobacco about every 5 weeks or so and it costs me about $100. But that's for GOOD all natural tobacco and not he cheap stuff they sell in the convenience stores which is loaded with chemicals. I send away for mine from a top tobacconist who mixes his own blends and its nothing but 100% tobacco with nothing added except for the flavoring.
George VI was the ideal man for the time. Like all good men on Earth, he was unprepared for the extreme challenge presented to him. that scene absolutely blew my mind because he knew he was dying - the strength and the courage of this great man and leader of a great nation!
God grant you well-deserved rest, Your Majesty.
Very well expressed and I concur with your opinions of the king.
If he didn’t want the crown, he could have given the UK People a Republic.
He’s probably the greatest monarchs since George VI in 1936. Hopefully 2024 should be a better year for him as Woody.EXE and I continue to reign on
God Save The King, George VI
God Save The Queen, Elizabeth II
God Save The King, Charles III
For a man who was not meant to be king he really was good king that helped Britain in its time of crises
Not going to lie , watching the show for a second time I cried at his death 😭💔
How many times u watched it? I only found it last year an I watched it all in a few days , yep his death even tho i knew it was coming broke me every time 😔
Im a 25 year old American now living in Britain, a US army veteran, married to a British girl with a kid born in England and I cried by the end of this and I am not ashamed to admit that. Well done sir. Great choice of clips, music, and editing. I would’ve been proud to have served under this man.
Gaaaaaaayy
You are just betraying your republican values and your integrity as an US American if you served under a monarch.
Oh, crying is wrong because you’re a man, right?
Who are you? Captain Toxic Masculinity?
Basically that visit to Germany after he and Wallis married was when it was hatched that if Hitler successfully invaded Britain then Edward would be the puppet King with Wallis as Queen. The Duke Windsor did that "unofficial state visit" without permission from the government and the royal family. All this "he was niave" business is bollocks because tensions were running high between Germany, Britain and the rest of Europe when his father was on the throne and the Duke would know that but he went ahead with that visit anyway. When France fell he and Wallis fled to a friend who was a known Nazi sympathiser and had to be threatend with a court martial off the British government to leave and go to the Bahamas and badically rule and he moaned about that despite living in luxury and beautiful weather whilst Britain was being bombed to pieces and living on rations he was a very selfish and self indulfed child who never grew up
It wasnt entirely Edwards fault, he was basically forced to abdicate the throne by the church.
@@DefinitelyAxe Back then Church didn't allow remarriage after divorce Edward being the head of the Church has to go by their teachings. Remarriage has only been allowed since 2005.
@@DefinitelyAxe It was his fault that he supported the Nazis.
He was the definition of a good King, God Bless him.
King George VI is one of my greatest role models because though he was not meant to be king he still took up the heavy mantle of being king with dignity and still stuck with his people when thing were tough and I admire him for his service and the way he was so brave,I had just wished that he had stuck with us a little longer than he did
May he Rest in peace and always be in the hearts of people cause maybe without his bravery we might not be the living the world we live in now
I would love it if Netflix made a WWII miniseries prequel to The Crown.
Yesss me too
I love this idea!
Wish granted
That would be, in a word, magnificent.
The duckshoot scene might be my favorite of the series. George VI was a great man.
He stepped up to the plate and led his country through its greatest trial with great dignity and courage. No man could have done more.
Can we take time to appreciate the channel owner for giving love emoji to every coment till now
I like to be involved with my audience :)
@@Infernoytedits yes
Jared Harris is my favorite actor among several stellar casts in The Crown. Good acting is about so much more than the lines spoken. But then with a father like Richard Harris, you wouldn't expect him to be mediocre.
The writing of the show is so great! They endeared us to the king immediately with just one episode 😩😩
I felt sorry for him, like imagine the pressure, strong man for taking hold of that crown.
He is getting a really good name for himself portraying people from history, King George VI and Valery Legasov were both done really well
Its just losely based on true history, but you should also check him out as Captain Crozier in „The Terror“
@@whay2082 YESSS. THE TERROR. Definitely one of his best performances ever. I am satisfied watching that and Chernobyl on loop for months (totallyyy not speaking from experience there lol). Plus in The Terror, you get Tobias Menzies too, also giving one of his best performances of his career (Outlander, of course, being up there as well for him).
I have seen the movie "the kings speech" recently. Before that, I have never heard of King George VI, but since then George VI is one of my favourite monarchs.
Hahaha
What an actor Jared harris !! Mind blowing!! He is a gem !! Man plz give this man an Oscar already !! He deserves every bit of it....I saw him in crown in Chernobyl!!!! God... yoy just cant help but attach yourself to him...you feel wht he is feeling in tht moment of acting.
Man i mean every dialogue delivery, every expression, the sincerity.... if you ask me he is the epitome of acting. I want to see him recieve an Oscar.
I was so sure he'd win an Emmy for Chernobyl....FANTASTIC....but didn't...Almost makes sense....his father Sir Richard Harris....never landed an Oscar either.
In order to receive an Oscar he will have to make a theatrical film and be nominated for it. He cannot receive an Oscar for the Crown because it is a television film. He could receive an Emmy for it however, since it was made for television.
Great Man, Great King, Great Husband, Great Father. I love him.
Watching this now it has all come full circle. May she rest in peace.
That's why Elizabeth urged Philip to give up smoking, because her father died of cancer because of cigarettes
Four people who lived a relatively quiet life as members of the Royal Family, trying to be as normal as possible. Then one day, they were thrust front and centre. Then for the best part of 90 years, they looked over us.
Jared Harris is one of the best actors out there. He needs to be in everything.
But not the family friend who visit them once and again
ELIZABETH WOULD HAVE BEEN QUEEN REGARDLESS SHE WAS 3RD IN LINE TO THE THRONE
When I think of His Majesty King George V1 I think of something Douglas MacArthur once said
"Duty, Honour, Country" - those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be.
Jared Harris is a great great Actor and a Great Man
I'm from the Philippines so I'm not too familiar about King George VI, but learning about him from the Crown, I have nothing but respect for him.
He was one of our greatest monarchs.
You should watch the movie The King's Speech. It's about how King George VI tries to overcome his stammering problem. Great movie, got some Oscars including Best Picture
Bertie was a true King, in the spiritual sense
The most worthy of leaders are always the ones who wish not too be but know it's their reasonability to lead.
He was really the perfect son, an angel to his family and country
I saw a picture of His Majesty when he saw hid daughter and son in law off on their tour and I feel that he knew that he would not see her alive again. The last commenters were right when they commented that while he was meant to be king (thanks to his brother listening to his “other brain”) he did a good job leading the UK through some of its darkest days.
Arguably our greatest monarch
He's right up there but is often overlooked because his reign was relatively short.
Matt and Claire were so good as the young Prince Consort and Queen.
They really were
George VI. In all our long history, our most beloved. The last great king. Father of Elizabeth the Great. The world may have moved on, the time for all this may be drawing to a close, but we shall never forget. ❤
Jared Harris is an amazing actor.
I hope we see George VI again at that end of the series. To bring it all full circle.
Queen Elizabeth honestly was beautiful both in youth and old age.
Hope there's a prequel on this - from the last years of Queen Victoria to Abdication - even in just 1 season
He was such a big presence for such a little amount of screentime
Imagine being so disillusioned at the Soviet Union that you fake your suicide, travel back in time, and become the king of Great Britain...
And then fake your death and work for a New York advertising agency.
"SHE is the job......."
(great line)
George VI is my favorite king.
Now I need to rewatch, "The King's Speech"
I wonder what he'd think of Charles as his grandson for what he is, so much for "putting nothing above family"
Charles puts the royal family as an institution first not as a family.
@@SymphonyBrahms Well, assuming that you are a British subject and I'm not, its not my place to say. But deserve it or not, he's GOING to be as he is the first born son.
As for Charles wanting to marry the 'unsuitable' woman, didn't he end up doing that anyway? And the Queen apparently had a change of heart because she DID decree that Camilla Cornwall will in fact be called 'queen' when Charles ascends to the throne!
So I'm interested in YOUR opinion as to what King George might think or say about the entire situation?
I have to say it. Queen Mary was a badass.
i remember watching the christmas episode for the first time and i just cried, idk why. then suddenly in the next scene he just died so i was even more emotional lmao. idk what the real george vi is like but i adore this fictional george vi character so much
I'd say from everything I have watched and read about him they had his charachter spot on he was a huge family man who adored his wife and daughters and had a strong sense of duty like his daughter.
He was one of the few British monarchs who knew how to be a real parent .
The real George VI was very shy, very humble, easily nervous, but with enormous courage.
If only Colin Firth reprised his role from The Kings Speech. His death on The Crown would have been heartbreaking....
The actor who played Edward Duke of Windsor is the same actor who played Prince Charles in the movie The Queen.
It's strange to think that the Royal Family line would have taken a completely different path had Prince Albert Victor not died of Influenza in 1892. His younger brother ascended the throne in 1910 and became George V, father of Bertie and grandfather of our late Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Mary who had been engaged to marry Prince Albert, married George instead.
King George VI: lets see what my little girl doing
*King George sees Elizabeth still alive and it's reveal she won't go until her bastard goes first*
King George: Smart Elizabeth
What a superb actor
This role was well played. I fell in love with the King, and knew his story before I watched The Crown, but this Actor did a phenomenal job
I agree 100 Percent! There should be a limited prequel portrayal of king George VI played by the great actor Jared Harris🙏🕊
The presence of this great actor Mr. Jared Harris was absolutely mind blowing🤯
I am not English. I hail from the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, but I must say that King George
VI did his duty to his country as did his daughter.
He did his duty to money and power.
There was always something so familiar about him. I thought him excellent actor. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Until I learned that he is the late Richard Harris’ son. Well, that explains a lot.
The Christmas scene was my heartbreaker.
Jared Harris did an excellent job portraying King George VI. Too bad we didn't get to see more of him.
At least there seems to be flashback scenes of him beyond the first two episodes of season one. I was so worried that it was all I was gonna see of him.
They couldn't picked a better actor to play that role, George VI

George VI died because he smoked too much. Now, the stress of his brother's antics forcing him into the spotlight certainly didn't help, but even before that, he was a chain-smoker. Even after having to get one of his lungs removed, he smoked like a chimney until it finally killed him.
I don't think that the connection between smoking and cancer was widely known till later.

Yrue--Victoria was the only daughter of George III's fourth son. Between her three elder uncles, there were only three legitimate children, all of whom died young.
Victoria was meant to rule. She was the only child of the man next in line to the throne. He died before she was born. So she was next in line to the throne.

Dang, really nice editing job here. Well done.
Edward outlived him by 20 years
Smoking obviously didnt affect him as much
Even churchill made it to 91
Smoking and drinking
Well hold up there just a minute there dude. First off, both Bertie and David had cancer, one of the lung and the other of the throat. However I think the added stress of being unprepared and thrust into the role of King really contributed to Bertie's death at an earlier age. He was weak (in the physical sense) and got old before his time
Regarding Churchill, he was a cigar smoker and, like MOST cigar smokers, do not inhale like cigarette smokers do.
Yes I quite agree I went onto a pipe
Then gave it up
However I'm wary of going back
To it tobacco rather expensive
Still when I become more financial
Who knows!
