- The death of a national leader such as Redmond, even one who had fallen out of favour with many of his fellow countrymen and women, would normally be accompanied by a lying in state in a prominent location in Dublin such as the Mansion House or City Hall.
The year previously Redmond had been booed and jostled by a hostile crowd as he left the Irish Convention in Trinity College Dublin. The mood against his brand of moderate constitutionalism and support for the British war effort had turned ugly.
The people of Dublin never got to pay their respects or otherwise to Redmond.
Fearing what his biographer Dennis Gwynn called “disgraceful demonstrations” Redmond’s friends and family took his body from Kingstown Harbour and placed it on a special train bound for his native Wexford town. There they knew he would get a funeral in keeping with his status as the most prominent Irish politician of the first two decades of the 20th century.
The Irish electorate posthumously rejected Redmond’s legacy at the December 1918 general election, but the people of Wexford retained their affection for him and his family, turning out in their tens of thousands for his funeral in Wexford town. The bells of the Catholic and Protestant churches in the town tolled simultaneously. Every shop was closed. House blinds were drawn.
I can speak from experience that Jas. is short for James. What a shame that people leave their trash on the ground, particularly in a cemetery. A lack of respect, to be sure. Thanks for the tours, Sue!
Thanks Jim for that, I wasn't sure appreciate it ❤️🇮🇪🍀
Wow it is amazing the age. Beautiful Sue. Thank You
Thanks Susan x
Lovely cemetery and history. Loved the memtion of your father caring and cleaning up the cemetery. Thank you for sharing. God Bless
Thanks Nana D xx
Wow amazing very old cemetery. 👍👍
Thank you Reza❤️🍀🇮🇪
It's amazing to see gravestones dating back 200 - 300 years old, with the print clearly visible. The Redmond mausoleum is interesting because we have Redmonds in our family. Good to know the local councils caring for these historical cemeteries.
Wexford has several monuments for the Redmonds in wexford, I even know a few Redmonds too 🇮🇪🍀❤️
You make me laugh when you knock on the doors of the vault. I hope no one knocks back. Enjoyed your vlog. ❤
😂😂 It's kinda become a thing I have to do now, I'd get some fright if I ever heard a knock back 😂😂🇮🇪🍀❤️
Beautiful and well maintained. The mausoleum designed is amazing. Thank you Sue!
Thanks Randy 🇮🇪🍀❤️
That was brilliant Sue. I always wondered what that little cemetery looked like. It's great that the council are taking care of it. Its lovely, and the Redmond mausoleum is beautiful. Pretty little butterfly too 🦋Thanks for the video x
Thanks Sinead, my beautiful Granny lived on that street and even as a child I was curious about it, finally I got to visit ❤️🍀🇮🇪
I really enjoy the old cemeteries. Thanks Sue 🇨🇦
Thanks Cathy S❤️🍀🇮🇪
This is lovely to see the history written on many of the beautifully designed gravestones. Thank you so much Sue, at least the wind has died down. 🦋 Angels are near you. 💕🇦🇺
It did but today now its wet, can't win with the Irish weather, ❤️🍀🇮🇪
A very well kept cemetery. Nice to know the council keeps it up. Amazing to read stones very old. Thanx Sue as always for reading and remembering. All those departed souls who had lives like us just so long ago. God Bless❤😊
You are very welcome
You give me a reason to smile. Love your work. I look forward every day, but take a break. It's hard work.
It is Lee but I'm back to work in a week and I won't be able to travel during the week so I'm getting as much as I can done 😜❤️🍀🇮🇪
Hey Sue, another great video. I love these old cemeteries, the dates may speak of a time long past, but each of these people lived lives, just like us. The design of the Redmond mausoleum was interesting, almost like a mini-castle in scope. The Redmond family certainly has a long-standing history with the area as well. And you gotta luv the butterfly! Thankx :)
Thanks John ❤️🍀🇮🇪
What a BEAUTIFUL cemetery!! I'm SOOOOOO glad glad that the local council is looking after it!! It's such a shame that you need a key to get in, but needs must, I suppose!! Unfortunately, there are some DREADFUL people these days who wouldn't think twice about vandalising the cemetery!!
Thanks for this, Sue!! XXXX
Loved this Sue ! Another two of my family surnames, Roche and Sullivan ♥️😘🌹🌹🌹
Wow, Roche is very popular here, sullivan less so but I know loads of roches ❤️❤️

Take care Shel
Another good video, enjoy your accent.
Thanks very much 🇮🇪🍀❤️
It was not the biggest we have seen but what remarkable headstones they are in great condition.Probably because they don’t get battered by the winds that some of the more open ones get.The very old coffin type stone is meant to be lying down, but I guess they have done that for ease of mowing .I saw some of those complete whilst I was in Scotland in an old Churchyard in a small village of Loch Ness .There were some very old headstones too.Took photos in the days you put a film in and had not clicked it in right so no photos for the trip.A bit annoyed.Very old church there too.Thank you for the adventure again ..Love n Light 🥰
Ahh that's a pity Christine, ye you're right, I've never seen one standing upright ❤️🍀🇮🇪
Would love to of heard your father's story's god bless loved this one
He just told me of cleaning the area really, how overgrown it was and finding old graves, I always found it fascinating the age of the graves and loved hearing about it ❤️🍀🇮🇪
It amazes me, how easy it is to read these tombstones that are so old.
There's is a very high wall around the cemetery, maybe that's protected them over the yrs🤔❤️🍀🇮🇪
NICE GRAVEYARD! BEAUTIFUL WEATHER! LOVE 💕 WATCHIN' UR VIDEOS! THANK U FOR SHARIN'! HAVE A HAPPY Y BLESS DAY Y NITE! TAKE CARE!✝️🤭🛐🇺🇲
Thanks Brenda 🇮🇪🍀❤️
Some brilliant head stones it's a good thing that you need a key to get in here to beautiful to be ruined 🙂
I agree ❤️❤️
I just got a new phone, raised all the volume up, no difference. Sorry.
I can hear it fine, volume is up, sorry about that Randy 😢🇮🇪🍀❤️
I was wondering what the material was for those 1700s gravestones that were still very clear to read.
I know slate was a popular material at time but I don't think they were slate🤔❤️🍀🇮🇪
Amazing graveyard and thank you
Thank you
LOVE THE OLD STONE AND BRICKS , IT'S LIKE A TIME MACHINE AND YOUR SHAKING HANDS WITH THE PERSON WHO MADE THEM , THAT STONE COFFIN AMAZING , BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLY 🦋 WOW , KEEP THOSE IRISH EYES A SMILIN SUE 😉🤣🤣👻☠️👻☠️👻☠️
That's well said T, it was great ❤️🍀🇮🇪
I love to see the photos of them
It's great when I find the photos, unfortunately it's not always easy and sometimes they are copyrighted so you can't use them ❤️🍀🇮🇪
@@SerenitySueGraveyards great full for what you do find sue keep up the good work love the vlogs
2.06 ish the coffin type structure… they are old water fountains where people could fill up flower vases and get water to clean the graves, however due the the age of the stones the council do all that now.
Thanks
🙏 💝😭💝🎆🎇 never forgetten
❤❤❤
I think is sad when they close cemeteries. I understood why they do it sometimes, but it is still sad.
Yes Becki I hate seeing the closed up, everyone deserves a visit
In great condition the stones I wonder who and how they lived all the people
The Redmonds were probably wealthy so lived good lives but you would wonder how others lived, the poorer families not so lucky but they still managed to live to good ages ❤️🍀🇮🇪
Perhaps you could raise your volume.
Could you not hear me? Sorry about that volume was up 🤔❤️🍀🇮🇪
@@SerenitySueGraveyards This video was much easier to understand than some of your earlier ones . I ad I trouble understanding you.
Thanks Ben, yes between the wind blowing and not understanding the editing I think I've got a little better❤️🍀🇮🇪
Sound is perfect great video sue👍👍 ..
Thanks Emerald Isle ❤️🍀🇮🇪
Thank you for your caring.
Thank you M ❤️
Despite the start of the famine in Ireland it's amazing how people of the time were so wealthy to erect such expensive headstones and Muslims instead of spending the money to help people of Ireland at the time who were starving with the hunger
Very very true John 👍 ❤
Beautiful
Thanks Tammy ❤️
Those steel crosses are magnificent; I love their unique shapes. Is this where you are from Sue? Are your parents still alive? 💜🍀
Both my parents are thankfully still alive and well too, yes I'm from wexford ❤️
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Oh my! You are so fortunate! I miss mine every day. Died within three months of each other 10 years ago. 🍀
Ahh I'm so sorry to hear that,, they couldn't live without each other 😢 💔💔
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Yes, exactly. One from Northern Ireland, the other originally from near you. 💜🍀💜

@@SerenitySueGraveyards 50 years ago when I was young I lived by a swamp and there were all kinds of butterflies and dragonflies they’re not as many now the swamp is gone I think a swamp is an excellent place to have insects
Sue, "Jas." is the abbreviation for "James", not Jason!
Common mistake, I guess. Just look at your local phone directory, Jas. is the universal abbreviation for James, not Jason, nor Jasper. Also, many thanks for this video, since I'm descended from the Redmonds through my paternal grandmother's paternal grandmother, Anna Strode Hopper. Her grandmother Strode was a Redmond. I do not know if her family was from Wexford, but Anna Strode Hopper's husband, John Hopper Jr. was from a family that emigrated to Virginia from Wexford.
Thanks a million
Have fun, I will be waiting. Practice my Irish accent.
Oh I really do love it 🇮🇪🍀❤️ thanks
