  • The death of a national leader such as Redmond, even one who had fallen out of favour with many of his fellow countrymen and women, would normally be accompanied by a lying in state in a prominent location in Dublin such as the Mansion House or City Hall.
The year previously Redmond had been booed and jostled by a hostile crowd as he left the Irish Convention in Trinity College Dublin. The mood against his brand of moderate constitutionalism and support for the British war effort had turned ugly.
The people of Dublin never got to pay their respects or otherwise to Redmond.
Fearing what his biographer Dennis Gwynn called “disgraceful demonstrations” Redmond’s friends and family took his body from Kingstown Harbour and placed it on a special train bound for his native Wexford town. There they knew he would get a funeral in keeping with his status as the most prominent Irish politician of the first two decades of the 20th century.
The Irish electorate posthumously rejected Redmond’s legacy at the December 1918 general election, but the people of Wexford retained their affection for him and his family, turning out in their tens of thousands for his funeral in Wexford town. The bells of the Catholic and Protestant churches in the town tolled simultaneously. Every shop was closed. House blinds were drawn.

I can speak from experience that Jas. is short for James. What a shame that people leave their trash on the ground, particularly in a cemetery. A lack of respect, to be sure. Thanks for the tours, Sue!

It's amazing to see gravestones dating back 200 - 300 years old, with the print clearly visible. The Redmond mausoleum is interesting because we have Redmonds in our family. Good to know the local councils caring for these historical cemeteries.

Hey Sue, another great video. I love these old cemeteries, the dates may speak of a time long past, but each of these people lived lives, just like us. The design of the Redmond mausoleum was interesting, almost like a mini-castle in scope. The Redmond family certainly has a long-standing history with the area as well. And you gotta luv the butterfly! Thankx :)

It was not the biggest we have seen but what remarkable headstones they are in great condition.Probably because they don’t get battered by the winds that some of the more open ones get.The very old coffin type stone is meant to be lying down, but I guess they have done that for ease of mowing .I saw some of those complete whilst I was in Scotland in an old Churchyard in a small village of Loch Ness .There were some very old headstones too.Took photos in the days you put a film in and had not clicked it in right so no photos for the trip.A bit annoyed.Very old church there too.Thank you for the adventure again ..Love n Light 🥰

Common mistake, I guess. Just look at your local phone directory, Jas. is the universal abbreviation for James, not Jason, nor Jasper. Also, many thanks for this video, since I'm descended from the Redmonds through my paternal grandmother's paternal grandmother, Anna Strode Hopper. Her grandmother Strode was a Redmond. I do not know if her family was from Wexford, but Anna Strode Hopper's husband, John Hopper Jr. was from a family that emigrated to Virginia from Wexford.
