My very first childhood hero. One year from a school summer reading list, I chose a book called The Baseball Life of Willie Mays. I was probably 8 or 9 years old. I have no idea if it's still in print or not, but I must have read that book 20 times. I knew every detail about his early life and baseball career. If I still had that book, I would read it again right now. RIP Say Hey Kid
It's a shame Bill Russell doesn't get the same acclaim as Willie Mays, Jim Brown and Muhammed Ali. If they recorded blocked shots, Russ would have averaged a career triple double. 11 championships, 8 in a row, 5 MVPs. Hands down, the greatest basketball player and of the very greatest American athletes of all time.
Willie Mays was the best all-around non-pitcher in the history of baseball. Ted Williams was the best hitter. Babe Ruth was the greatest player because he was second only to Williams and hitting plus he was a great pitcher. If he had pitched in his entire career, he would’ve been in the Hall of Fame as a pitcher.
8/22/65 was a Sunday afternoon. I was there. Indeed, Marichal's bat connected with Roseborough's head, not "almost." Three batters later, Mays hit a 3-run homer off Sandy. But Marichal was never the same after the suspension, and the Dodgers were excellent over the final six weeks.
You could say willie mays had the first web gem of baseball

Where Triples go to die. IMO the best quote of all time describing Willie Mays' glove.

DiMaggio sure as he'll doesn't have the stats to back up Russo's assertion.
The GOAT Willie Mays
Would love to know which writers left Willie Mays off their Hall of Fame ballot.
also he still has the most putouts by any outfielder with over 7,000
If speed and defense mean anything, Mays has the edge over Ruth.
I got Barry Bonds as the Goat tbh but I got Mays > Ruth too
@@OG_Phil225 Barry's up there, #2, Mays his godfather taught Barry to be great
