    Good to know, I did think it was whoever stands first, but when you explain it it makes sense that it's whoever is at the steepest part of the wave

      Thanks for that and of course it can be complex as there maybe a time when a surfer has done the wrong thing and just paddled past the surfer who's waited longest and then goes .. by snaking or just going round the back.. and thats wrong .. we should.. I do say "should" wait our turn. So in that circumstance you may see a "drop in" out of frustration . But .. in an ordered line up its the surfer who its nearest the white water and therefore often in the steepest part of the wave who has priority . Hope we see you at www.surfschoolsrilanka.com/ and www.surfschoolanzarote.com/ and do check our Insta instagram.com/surfschools.

      It's whoever stands first. He is talking about shortboarders at a Reek break like pipeline. Not normal beach break.

    I luv it when you teach this , because it instills in the learners, fear, of the competent surfer who uses another set of unspoken and mostly unknown set of circumstances ,, blow hard .

    This is excellent information. Shadowing is a tough one but don't swamp the wave someone already has. Pull out and whoo hoo🤙🤙🤙🤙 the guy. Communication and respect is huge. Remember Your in the ocean not a swimming pool. Lots of dangerous things can happen and possibly death from drowning. Excellent info.

    Hey Tim, what can I do about people who are hogging every wave? There is a guy who takes every good wave because he always comes back and sits at the spot where the wave breaks. He never gives anyone a chance. Worst part is he doesn't talk to anyone. He only screams at people who snake him/others.

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  7 років тому +4

      thats a tough one .. people like that are often just unapproachable as they have issues way beyond surfing .. and I expect if you saw him behind the wheel of a car he'd be just the same. Its when they just dont answer a "hello" or acknowledge even a smile you know pretty much all is lost .. expect too that he doesn't surf with friends either ? What to do ? You know I really dont have an answer to that but if he's that much of a problem talk to others about him and see if a "collective" approach might work. Maybe he was surfing your spot for years before crowds came or maybe just a real idiot who see everyone as a challenge.. does he surf well ?

      Do like me in tenerife ( between the local pro hero's ) give one whit your hands talk ....and than you take one ! That's it even he is the local popular hero ;)

      its all about not only respect but understanding there are those who we cannot change and if that works for you and you get no hassles then there you go

    • @joesurfer9754
      @joesurfer9754 6 років тому +2

      @th : You need to stay out of his way. He does not have to change, you do. It has NOTHING to do with "people like that". He is a better surfer and knows position better. He worked hard and is waaayyy better than you. The best surfers always get the best waves. He does not talk a lot because he is focused, and good. His surfing does all the talking. I'v seen lots of guys like that. They are legends. If you can not compete with him, find another break or be satisfied with his left overs. That's how it works in the line up. That is how it has always worked. I know if I see all the local Hot doggers at a break, not to go there and I am one of them. The better the surfers are, the farther you should be from them. One day, with hard work and with practice, you will be able to rule the break. No safe spaces in the line up. When you can rule a break, everyone see's it and get's out of your way. The good thing about it is that if you surf around guys like that and try to be like them, you will get A LOT Better. Ask him questions. That's how I got better by asking the bad assed local hotdoggers questions and competing with them in the lineup. I promise, they will frustrate you.

    • @butteredmonkey
      @butteredmonkey 6 років тому +1

      I think it depends on what type of break you are surfing. If it's a beach break and the peak is shifting requiring you to paddle about and move a lot then I agree with Joe Surfer's comment about being able to read and be in position - so long as there are enough waves on offer
      If however its a reef break with possibly 2-3 waves in the set with a long period in-between and the person takes a wave set then paddles out directly, sits on the peak and takes the next set wave after set wave then you could inform calmly that person that you're all here to surf and to take waves - if you do it calmly then there should be no problem. Just don't miss the next wave you paddle for!!! :-)
      I've found the best surfers, not intermediate or advanced, but very good surfers don't need to hog, they can let waves go cos they know they'll be dialled in for the best wave it comes.
      Ride on and keep surfing though

    In the canaries you got lot's of schools ( local sometimes ) whit ( instructors )who zit like ducks in your pad ...Me personally won't surf in school arias.... but they come to the higher wave places when there are non at there beach It's dangerous

    Hey Tim, your videos are growing on me. Thanks for sharing!
    I'm 44 and I started surfing two months ago in Rio with a 8' mini Malibu. I've totally done those mistakes - and they sure can cause serious accidents! Nothing has happened to me so far, but I know I gotta become more "surfwise".
    I'm still getting used to my board (it's summer here, so it's been mostly flat, wish I could practice more) in every way: sometimes it is a pretty tough object to control, especially if the waves are 1 meter or bigger. When I see that there's no way I'm going to be able to paddle though a wave (especially on those 1m plus waves days) and I see other surfers dropping in and coming my way super fast, what should I do? Sometimes there's no time to duck dive or do a turtle roll. I've seen a video here on YT called "Wingnut's Art of Longboarding", and he says that he goes up to the nose of the board and pull it in to his stomach, but he doesn't show how he does it IN the water.
    Could you please show us how to procede in situations like this? Thanks again!

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  7 років тому

      Sorry to miss your post so long ago. I dont like that pulling the nose to the stomach so I still try to do the fastest roll I can and then I can use the board as a shield .. kind of .We have a new channel as you can see and do check out www.surfschoolanzarote.com/ and www.surfschoolsrilanka.com/

    I've never heard anyone in America call a peak an A-frame. More of a term for houses and structures.

    • @SurfInsight
      @SurfInsight  6 років тому +3

      Quite a common term amongst my friends from the US John but maybe used more in the past and a certain generation

    • @joesurfer9754
      @joesurfer9754 6 років тому +1

      They been calling it "A-Frame" in the USA probably since surfing started. I'v never called them anything else.

      What???? Common term. But it's only an A-frame when it breaks both left & right.
