Four Days and Three Spots | 2023 Colorado Shiras Moose Hunt

  • In 2023, I was surprised to draw a bull moose tag in just nine years. Many hunters have been applying for over 20 years, and have yet to draw a tag. Colorado is home to the Shiras moose, which is the smallest member of the moose family. Colorado Parks and Wildlife launched an effort to introduce this moose back in 1978 with twelve animals, and their numbers have drastically increased over the last 45 years. To be honest, we run into moose on almost every hunting trip we go on now. However, it seemed the moose could smell my tag and were playing hard to get this year. It took four days and three spots to finally get on some moose. Just before though, on the third day, I saw that an archery hunter had harvested a small bull. I vividly remember him saying that he wasn't going to pass on one, and those were wise words. You'll see that I almost had a crack at a really nice bull, and though the one I eventually harvested is not as mature, I'm content with what I got. We prayed hard this trip. God strengthened our resolve and assured us he was hearing our prayers. In the end, he led us to an amazing place. A place neither my hunting buddy or I had ever been, and it was there that we saw three bulls and a cow. The first bull and cow were skittish and took off as I attempted to get close enough for a shot. I felt dejected, but my buddy Joe, glassed the area and happened upon two other bulls. We hiked further into this beautiful basin, and it was there that I was able to take down the larger of those two bulls. He was smaller than the first bull we saw, but I could barely stand with his head and cape on my back. He was huge for me, and he is my trophy! We ended up harvesting 205 pounds of meat from him, and that's after everything was deboned and packaged up too. This was an amazing experience, and it's one that I will never forget. I'm so grateful to God for this opportunity and for the providence he poured out on us. I'm thankful for my wife who had to take care of three kids and hold down the fort. When I was feeling discouraged and dejected, she's the one who assured me they were all right and that I need to stay the course. I'm grateful for my hunting buddy Joe because there's only a handful of people that can go through something like this without getting on each others nerves. In fact, it's the complete opposite with Joe. Our bond solidifies in the wilderness, and our thoughts turn to our Creator. It's on trips like this that we learn how to let go and let God. I'm grateful for all the cool people we met along the way and those that helped scout, told us where they'd seen moose, gave us encouragement, helped with ATVs, processed meat, and just listened to our experience. There's always more to the story than I can put in a video, but this is the best I can do. I appreciate you watching, and I truly appreciate your support. Thank you!

      Indeed! Yeah... Having a family and being away mentally taxes me in the field. I kept worrying about them, but my wife would say, we're fine... go get your moose. And so I did😁 I know there's people that can get into the hunting mindset and just forget about the rest of the world, but I struggle. We don't glamp out there. No heaters, no fire, just a cold tent every night. Not complaining, but after 4 nights, I'm really missing home! Not seeing animals plays even more mental games on me. But when we rolled into that last area and saw how beautiful it was, it filled us with hope. Glad we stick it out for sure. Thanks for watching!

    Ryan! Congrats. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us. What a trip with ups and downs. I know the feelings associated with not seeing game, then to see a moose and have it spook? I was so deflated for you, but then to see the 2nd bull?! Well done on the stalk. You did a great job putting together a respectfully done video and sharing the story. Enjoy the harvest! No easy task!

    • @JumbleTronChannel
      @JumbleTronChannel  10 місяців тому +1

      I swore I replied to you, but I'm not sure where it went. Thanks Dan! Yeah, that one that spooked was a real looker. It's all good though. I still can't believe he spooked, but he had a cow with him, so maybe that's better in the long run for the moose. Just glad I got it done, and the meat is just delicious, so it's a big win.

    Wonderful video, Ryan. I really enjoyed the way you chatted to us throughout it all. The scenery... that place is paradise! It looks like you found yourself a little brooktrout creek that you may need to visit next spring!
    Congratulations on a gorgeous looking bull. Seeing 3 bulls on day 4 is impressive. The ground and pound was worth it, and now you have plenty of meat!
    I'd like to give moose hunting a try one day. It's a lot more challenging then deer hunting, and the prize of success must feel amazing.

      Thanks man! I feel like here moose is a bit easier, though it's hard to say. They aren't very pressured here, so it's pretty easy if you can find them. Crazy that one took off, they honestly normally pursue us🤣 You are right about that creek though!!! I was thinking the same thing. Why am I moose hunting when there's trout here??? You know me well.
