I'm the person who originally asked the question in the video. Thank you for taking the time to answer it and for creating a video response - I really appreciate it!
Hi Morgan! This is quite literally my first comment on UA-cam. I just have to tell you how grateful I am to have found your channel and your videos on zettelkasten. I actually stumbled upon your channel 2 years ago when I was early in my phd and struggling to organize my knowledge. But I didn't apply your system then, I didn't understand the underlying philosophy of zettelkasten. Fast forward to last week, I finished how to take smart notes, and had a 180 on how I see note-taking and knowledge management. I found your channel again. And this time, I implemented your system, and reading, note-making, and writing have never been the same. A complete gamechanger. I'm now in the last year of my phd and so happy that I can now apply this system for writing my dissertation! I know you are writing your dissertation as well, all my best wishes to you!!!
Wow, that's awesome! So cool that your perspective on it changed over time and you're open to changing your processes and mind! Congrats on making it to your final year!
I always enjoy your videos! You really helped me to figure out how I use Obsidian and now I can’t go back. I absolutely love accessing all my info in one app and the ease of linking to sources is literally life saving. I switched PhD programs recently and will be starting up in January using all of your advice 😊
Thank you. This is so helpful. I was literally wondering this the other day. This is slightly different but what I think I’ll do is make a “UA-cam Videos” source and that’ll be where I set up my atomic notes (and I’ll place the UA-cam Link/title of video) whenever I get random insights from random YT videos!
Oh that's really smart, thank you for sharing! If you have a kind of anthology of sources that you pull from often but never more than one thing from each individual source (like each video on UA-cam).
Another fantastic video, Morgan! I take pretty much the same approach - if a main note has some one-off reference, I will just cite it with the bibliography.
Excellent non-use case, use case. : ))))) And occasionally this might even work with those fields that are bigger than juggling too. Metaphors might pop up in many other ways, especially those that have an actual element where "communication" is a thing. Like 'communication of science' or 'on how to use some software'.
I love your content - answers so many questions about the note taking process and gives a different light on the use of Obsidian. My question is: would you hash-tag your note with '#juggling' or simply link it with the keyword '[[juggle]]/[[juggling]]'?
I actually don't use tags at all! I only link them to other notes and use those notes as tags, basically, so I can see all the backlinks and what not. It keeps things simply for me with only one type of connection to think about and organize around so that it's super non-hierarchical!
@@morganeua - Thanks. Yep, I get it. I use them as a marker, really, to say this is generally 'about' this topic. Kind of for when it's nearly there, but not quite. PS: You have to try the PlantUML plugin for Obsidian - it's just amazing.
I'd like to know how you handle notes of original content/synthesis where you're essentially your own source. Whenever I finish a new piece of writing, I try and pull anything I could use again out as an atomic note, and I've gone back and forth between specifying which project/piece of writing I was originally working on when I created a notes, vs lumping all of my own thoughts into one source so as not to tie them to individual projects.
Do you have any tips for creating connections between source notes? Often, I take a bunch of notes about a source but struggle to connect those notes elsewhere. I think a big part of the problem may be that I forget older notes that could be relevant. Basically, what i have now is a bunch of "islands" of notes grouped around sources or registries.

Thanks for sharing and confirming the legitimacy of my approach! 😝
That is such an important consideration. Thanks.
Greetings from Acapulco!! Happy greetings!!

Great video! I love yuor zettelkasten content. How is the writing of your thesis going? I love those videos too.

Oh you look different now 😮
Good different? 😅
