I kept Forever Young, early pace horse, in the mix because of his consistency, and threw out Fierceness, another early pace horse, thinking that he would fold when challenged. Sierra Leone was a reluctant pick for the win because a come-from-behind horse has so much going against him in such a crowded field. But he closes like death and taxes, so I went with him. I try to visualize how the race will unfold, and then pick horses based on consistent effort, because this race is, above all, a gut check. Who knows? It’s a hard race to handicap.
