    Arguably the greatest offensive and defensive players ever. Definitely both were the most fun to watch. I was fortunate to grow up getting to watch the two of them each Sunday.

      Butkus and Sayers. The Greatest MLB and the Greatest RB of All Time. I don't care if their careers were short. I stand by My statement. I'm 62 yo. Watched alot of Football. No one will ever convince me otherwise.

      Those 2 Men sitting together, Doug Buffone and Ed O' Bradovich, were pretty much Butkus' only real help on Defense back in those days. Buffone was absolutely right. Shame on the Bears; Shame on George Halas. He had the perfect HC in waiting, George Allen, and let him leave. And look what that Man, Allen, did, not only with the Rams, but with the Redskins, too. Halas should've retired in '65 and let Allen run the Bears his way.

    Long live 40 & 51.

    All those years later you see in that interview at the end Sayers still couldn’t talk about Brian Piccolo without becoming visibly upset. Sometimes you lose people in your life and the grief is carried until the end of your own. When that is the case you know that person was of a different breed of special and good. Gale loved Brian like a brother. Can’t get more special than that.
    Now they run in Heaven’s Stadium in the same backfield.

    Gail sayers was one of the first to cut back against the grain and lay folks out.. Only OJ Simpson coukd do this but much later.. As for Butkus the league never ever so will again see a player go so far out.. Butkus just blasted everyone.. His tackles were beyond anything ever saw and perhaps there will never be another person so great and hard hitting as Dick Butkus.. I never was a bear fan but tuning in to sayers and Butkus as a real treat.. bar none..

    Gale Sayers: the most beautiful runner in NFL history whose extraordinary talent and brief career could be compared to our brief experiences of Hendrix or Basquiats' genius in the worlds of music and art; "...a magnificent running specimen...".

    I remember watching the 49er game when he went down with the knee injury after being hit by Kermit Alexander of the 49ers. It was sickening. Sayers was probably in the midst of his finest season as a pro. The week before, he set a personal and Bears record for most yards gained in a game, 205 yards against the Green Bay Packers. The Bears won that game 13-10 over Green Bay when Mac Percival made a free kick field goal after the Bears made a fair catch with less than two minutes to go in the game. It was a exciting year for the Bears. If they won their last game against Green Bay, they would win the Division of Minnesota by virtue of having defeated the Vikings twice. Unfortunately they fell short. Chicago lost to the Packers 28-27 at home in Wrigley Field. They trailed 28-10 and then mounted a furious comeback and almost won the game but for a late interception. A memorable season.

      If Sayers doesn't get hurt, Bears win that Division, they go to the Playoffs and quite possibly, 1969 doesn't happen. As it was, Sayers got hurt, they lost 3 of their last 5 games after the injury and they go 1-13 in 1969.

      Gamerking117 not/sad n that sense. They got to do what they loved. That's more than many in the world. So not sad. No one is guaranteed a championship in sports. But to play at a high level
      in a sport that you absolutely love?
      No sir don't feel sorry for either of them they are both hall of famers
      Record holders in a tough sport
      They helped their teak to achieve respect! And to gain winning records. Their fame footage is still stay died by football programs even today.
      Their lives are still filmed and spoken of.
      That's not sad brother that's epic
      Their all time great players. And really decent human beings.
      I'm not a bears fan and my m still seeing the greatness they brought to their team as well as their own family name. And too the N.F. L.
      No sadness here at all. Just an amazing career. Of two amazing players.

    If George Halas only let George Allen coach the team....Allen picked the 2 greats in the 1965 draft. He would've added good players around these guys like he did with the Rams & Redskins. Allen didn't want to wait on Halas to retire.

    • @carlweaver3243
      @carlweaver3243 2 роки тому +2

      That's the True shame of it all. Halas blew it big time. He was too set in his ways. Allen would've been like a breath of fresh air. A little bit Touched, if you will, but he knew how to win. Like you said, Volume, look at the Rams, and then, the Redskins. After Allen left, I don't believe the Bears drafted a Pro Bowl player until Wally Chambers in '73. I've said the same thing for Years now. Halas should've retired in '65 and made Allen HC. Allen had a Great mind and he was a Great motivator.

    The thing I wonder after seeing this was how Gale Sayers would have turned out if he had played in the 90s or later because knee surgeries turned out much more successful then than they did back in the late 60s. It's a shame to see how successful Sayers was before the injury because if he had stayed healthy like Payton did who knows where Sayers would be in terms of greatest RBs of all time.

    Such a sad story for a young talented player as him. I wasn't born yet But I'm a huge football fan since age 10 in 1977 and it wasn't until 1980 when I choose the team I knew I would love and be a fan 4 life. Giants. I am now 45 and I'm a die die hard giants fan. But I am a football fan 1st so I want to know every thing about the history of every team especially the great legends. I would love to see this movie Brian's Song but I can't find it anywhere in my town. 1 thing I don't understand. He passed away in 1969 and there conducting him in the Hall of fame in 2010. Why so many years I don't understand why the long wait. 😢😢

    • @carlweaver3243
      @carlweaver3243 Рік тому +1

      When Sayers and Butkus arrived in '65, the Bears had alot of aging veterans. After Allen left, the Bears drafts were terrible. All the more reason to keep Allen, although some would say Allen probably would've traded his Picks if he were HC. That we'll never know. But the point is that the players they picked were, for the most part, not very good. And the QB situation was a complete mess, and that went on for decades.

      We are often quick to idolise certain famous achievers, regardless of faults, while great, kind, brave, generous people go largely unnoticed, but we can't generalise against all football players as selfish. I understand Sayers has been something of a philanthropist, and there may be selfless motives to that.

    "shame on the bears! shame on them you had two of the greatest players they expected butkus and sayers to take them to the championship". shame on the lions! shame on them! they had to of the greatest players they expected sanders and johnson to take them to the championship... fan since 66 I've had the pleasure of watching 4 of the greatest players to not go to a championship~ as a fan the hardest part of that statement is how deserving these goats were and knowing how totally inept ownership let them go down in history with a blemish on their resume! they should be in jail for how completely ignorant they were!
