- Welcome back to Day 2 of Potato Harvest! Today, we’re focusing on a crucial step in the process-beating the vines off the potatoes to ensure we don’t lose a single spud. It’s all about precision and timing, as we prepare the field for a successful harvest. I’ll also be taking you along as I hop into the driver’s seat of the Spudnik potato harvester, one of the most advanced and complicated pieces of machinery on the farm. This incredible machine plays a key role in getting our potatoes out of the ground efficiently and intact.
Throughout the day, you’ll get an up-close look at how we run this vital equipment and all the moving parts that make harvest possible. From the challenges we face to the techniques we use, I’ll break it all down as we work to bring in this year’s crop. Come along and experience the hard work, teamwork, and technology that go into every load of potatoes we pull from the field. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to get potatoes from the dirt to your dinner table, this is the video for you! Don’t forget to like and subscribe to Rocky Mountain Farmer for more harvest updates

Wow - multitasking is your midlename👍
There’s definitely a lot to do sometimes I forget to turn the radio on
RNF,
Very busy controls and lots to watch. So different than the harvesters of the 1970's. Nice video. Bpe
Yes, things have changed quite a bit. Glad you enjoyed it.
It's a good thing that they have gps and auto steer can't imagine having to actually hold the steering wheel and watch the harvester
We have to do that from time to time when the GPS loses signal but yes, it is extremely difficult
@@RockyMountainFarmer you might have a Trimble raven is much better
Wasn't that bad tires usually followed the rows
I love your explanation of the equipment and the entire process. Keep it coming, I am riveted to this channel
I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Thanks for watching.
So many things to keep track of all at once operating that equipment. I don't know how you can do it!
It’s definitely a lot to watch for sometimes you don’t catch it in time and it breaks the whole chain
Great video. See you dog out Chris about the telephone pole and you almost hit one. ..😂🤣. You guys should be proud of what you’re doing. . How about mounting an American flag ???? It would be great seeing a flag flying in the fields. Thank you for sharing .👍👍👍👍👍
We did put an American flag on and it immediately broke off, but you’ll see that in an upcoming video. Glad you enjoyed the video.
so you should get yourself a manfrotto magic arm with a mafer clamp. you can clamp the camera to anything. you will also need a little adapter plate for cameras with the thumb screw then the screw to go pro adapter. b and h sell the good stuff. if you get the suction cup for the window get the one with the little pump. you get what you pay for with camera equipment but the good stuff lasts a really really long time. i did tv for 30 years.
I will have to look into that equipment I do have a little better mount. I just forgot to take it in the tractor that day. But thanks for the info. Hope you enjoyed the video.
El primer año que me toco cosechar, el primer circulo que me toco estaba difícil, ya que eran subidas bajas, de un lado de otro y el ultimo que me toco en ese año, estaba parejo el terreno, y fue mas fácil, Buenos videos, saludos y buen día.
Yeah, it can be pretty hard sometimes. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
Do not see how you dig in mud enjoy the videos dry land cotton farmer in Texas be safe God bless.
It’s hard to dig in the mud usually that’s what stops us. Thanks for watching. I hope you enjoyed it.
Ouch my head
Sorry about that haha
Thanks for the video.
?after the leaves chopped do you wait a certain amount of time, or you harvest right after? Thanks and I love you, God bless stay well be safe.
Normally we try to wait about four days, but I was so delayed with all the rain that they are only about one day behind me
@@RockyMountainFarmer thanks
All I will say if that happens is ouch that hurts lol
Haha
If you ca find some digger links maybe you can show the difference between them and belted chain. Ask you grandfather how long the old style would last compared to the new style.
I will see if I can find some laying around. I can tell you right now belted chain last about one harvest, but I know those hook chain. They might last a long time but they would come off a couple of times a day and you’d have to redo all your chains every day multiple times, so they were a nightmare. I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel.
Fun man. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
How long do the schools in your area get off for "Spud Harvest" so the kids can help you? I grew up in Sugar City and we would get 2 weeks off. But we were about 1-2 weeks behind what you do there south of Idaho Falls.
It takes me back to driving truck during harvest. They actually had arrows that would light up and tell you to move forward or backward and in and out so that they could load you the best and you're not doing hand signals. But now I think of it, that's a lot more buttons and things to keep track of while loading.
Here they get two weeks out in Shelley and Firth but I don’t know how many towns still do that with their being less and less potato farmers every year. I always thought it would be nice to have some lights, but it would be more to keep track of.
is there a reason you don't have more headland passes so you can do a U turn at end of field without a 10 point turn?
We do a U-turn at the end.
i wander if putting floater tires on some the trucks maybe 1 or 2 of the fleet
That might help
Do you guys kill the plants/vines prior to harvest?
Just with the vine beater four days before we dig
आपने कितना एकड़ में आलू लगाए है
We planted 1300 acres
I see the new 7000 receivers. Are you guys SF1 or RTK . I can’t remember if you already mentioned it
We are running RTK sub inch accuracy you have to do that with spuds so you stay exactly in the rows, but you know that as a potato farmer. Hope you enjoyed it.
@@RockyMountainFarmer I was planning on trying RTK with my new 7000 receiver this year, but I haven’t got around to getting the activation. I just make the rows with my fumigation rig with SF 1 and manually drive the rows remainder of the year.
They were a pain to replace
Yes
Have you ever seen the combines that are converted into potato pickers we have a farm here that does about 50,000 acres and they have six of them all they do is pick potatoes
I have never seen those before
I'd like to see that conversions myself
How many ton per hour? Potato
I’m not sure because it varies each day depending on breakdowns and all that but I think we harvest about 3 to 4,000,000 pounds per day
The real question is ... Did you have fun? Great show
Yeah, it was pretty fun. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
@@RockyMountainFarmer cool. Really enjoying your content. I've never followed a potato farmer before. Learning a WHOLE lot. Thanks.
Could you ask your dad what the fertilizer numbers are please.
Ouch that hurt
Sorry again
I noticed that once the truck is full you shut off the pto on the harvester quickly. With the chains loaded with dirt and potatoes do you worry it will not start again? On our beet harvester we have a three or four ton tank on the machine so we are able to run our chain empty before stopping the harvester. There is a lot of beet inside the machine if you can’t get it to start and you need to clear them by hand. NO FUN.!!
I do enjoy running the lifter especially when you have a good crop. Interesting video again, thanks.
I have a suspicion that much of these spud diggers are hydraulic (off a PTO pump), not direct drive like your Lockwood tank style diggers. That and these tractors can adjust the PTO clutch engagement.
The primary and secondary in diviner chains are all directly driven off the PTO so we are not worried about it not starting back up because it’s hard to stop a PTO if they were all hydraulically driven then you might worry. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
Your channel has a lot of potential a little advice. Don’t explain everything in every little detail. Let people make comments that’s how you grow your channel.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the tips.
