I clicked this because Dave Hurwitz listed the Dvorak 5th as one of the most unjustly neglected symphonies. I enjoyed this; many thanks!

I really love this symphony, I don't think Dvorak's symphony 5 gets enough praise. For me it's up there with all his later masterpieces. It might be my second or third favorite symphony from Dvorak. I prefer it over his sixth and seventh symphonies.

Great performance, and to think there was a time when this was "lost" and the 9th was called the 5th. One of my favorites of all symphonies

Bravo! An excellent rendition of Dvořák's 5th Symphony! I thank all musicians in the orchestra and the conductor. It's interesting to realize that Dvořák gave the oboe a prominent part in this symphony-watch the many close-ups of the female oboe player in numerous passages. I have been a lover of Dvořák's symphonies for almost 60 years now, starting with his 9th Symphony, "From the New World". At the time I first heard it, it was called his "5th" symphony. Later I learned that his "1st" symphony was actually his "5th" symphony, but I have never heard the 5th in a live concert. So I greatly appreciate this video upload. I highly recommend this excellent performance by the Basque National Orchestra under the admirable baton of Ruth Reinhardt.

The numbering conventions of Dvorak's symphonies have only become clear since the second half of the twentieth century. The funny thing, though-and says a lot about Dvorak as a person-is that he, too, mis-numbered them. You see, he forgot about the his Symphony #1 (The Bells of Zlonice), so the numbers he knew his symphonies by were actually one less than their correct count; thus, he called his 9th his 8th, and so on. And, no, this isn't a case of a composer disowning an early work. He genuinely forgot about it.

Thank you@@MaxCSiegel for the update! At least we should be grateful that Dvořák' didn't destroy his early symphonies or works as some composers/great writers did (or asked that their works be destroyed upon their death. I believe we should forever thank those who "disobeyed" the composers'/authors' final instructions).

Great performance. The conductor seems to have boundless energy, and knows how to convey it to the players! Thank you for your courage in making this video at a time when the coronavirus was still a real threat.

The beauty of Dvorak's music. I love the fifth more than the nineth. ❤🎹 A great performance from the Vasque orchestra.
La belleza de la música de Dvorak. prefiero la quinta que la novena.
Una gran interpretación de la orquesta Vasca.

I have spent this Sunday evening enjoying concert videos of your orchestra. If one were listening to FM classical radio and missed the introduction, after hearing this performance, you would probably guess that this Dvorak 5th was performed by the Czech Philharmonic, or Berlin Philharmonic, maybe Concertgebouw. But, no! It is the Basque National Orchestra! A fine ensemble that can play Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Schumann, Dvorak, whoever else, convincingly. Parabens a todos! Thanks for sharing with the rest of us.

    Liebe Frau Reinhardt,
    Dear Ms Reinhardt,

So strange to be reminded of the time when the world wore masks. I'm still ill. That's a reason I can't go to concerts any more. Covid is not over yet, hardly sleeping. Don't wake it up - keep wearing masks.
Great music eh? The stereo positioning of instrument benefits from the player's spacing ! (sliver lining )

Muy buena interpretación de esta orquesta regional española, en una de las menos inspiradas sinfonias (por lo menos de las que conozco de la 5 a la 9) del siempre inspirado Dvorak.

Since there are pre and post COVID performances of this work on UA-cam, hard to watch violinists sawing away wearing masks. Nevertheless you have to admire them working during the pandemic.

So does the wind players spew COVID to their fellow blowers through the bells of their instrument?

    • @TheStockwell
      @TheStockwell 7 місяців тому

No. Moisture from brass players collects in the tubing - as evidenced by the occasional tipping and draining of their instruments.
      Also, everyone was vaccinated.
      Best wishes from Vermont 🍁
