That was a great presentation. I think it was the best PowerPoint I've seen. Think of all the presentations you've been to with the charts, graphs and 20 bullet points per screen. That was top notch.

I wouldn't believe that talk about lexicography could be even remotely interesting, but now I believe it can :)

@AnarchyUnlimited It's a common misconception that lexicographers come up with definitions on their own and the speakers of the languages are a secondary authority to the dictionaries. It's actually the complete opposite - lexicographers study how speakers of a language use the word and derive the definition from them. That's why they must be updated, because language evolves. Lexicographers (and most linguists in general) are descriptivists, not prescriptivists.

to squiptipadoogleboinkaflop: to purposefully or inadvertently reveal one's belief that a word is not real unless it appears in a dictionary. // I suspect the belief comes from word games which require a set word bank (such as the Scrabble dictionary) whereby otherwise perfectly acceptable words would be an illegal move in play ^_^

@AnarchyUnlimited Strangely enough, your last sentence describes how language actually works. She's not proposing that it should to work that way, she's proposing that more people should have a deeper understanding of how language works.

@sophy95926 you should check out her website wordnik(dot)com . I was wondering what sort of online dictionary she was envisioning, too, and found the site on her twitter. It looks pretty cool from what I've seen so far.

I can find pretty much any infromation I'm looking for, including words and their etymology, on Wikipedia. Wiktionary is also on its way to become my number 1 online dictionary.
So I think a lot of professional lexicographers will soon be without a job...

"When's the last time you've looked up this word?" "lexicography", (no one responds).
I would be yelling out "I looked at that word two days ago in my Century Dictionary. A dictionary that not many know probably even exists. It's ten volumes in one volume and contains over seven thousand forty-eight pages. I like words just a bit."

What's wrong with that idea? Conformity is what's holding us back, the limitless possibilities of the English language cannot be contained in the traditional model. I agree with her because every time i write a paper, most recently for my psychology class, i encounter words in articles that are undictionaried; they are, i must admit, an obsolete structure for the demarcation of our language.

I'm really not sure what redefinition of the dictionary Erin is suggesting. She said that paper dictionaries can't hold enough words (now I'll always have to think about ham butt when I look things up), and online dictionaries lose the serendipity of finding unexpected words...so...then what? I thought she was going to have some new and exciting ideas for alternative dictionaries, but instead she just had some bad jokes.

numerbetical Order like alphabetical order but Numberbetical Order or Number-alphabetical order and numeralphabetical order a new name for that? like app-swap or ad-swap for commercial swap- why? their is no places for 3d printers to buy or use online- on places for green screen or blue screen it's all DIY and how to share apps? so instead of re-download them? just updates?- an establish menu for products but it's only for food no layby's on food only products? meaning establish menu for foods and limited time only menu for foods it's not like that for products in big shopping markets like layby or rent but no establish menu for products and limited time only menu for products it only works on food? why? can't they have phone protectors so on radiation making phones more healthier to use and put in your pocket?-- i got a good name for MLP major league player- or mlp-g Major League Player- Gamers or MLGP Major League Game Player? for console games- like MLP stands for My Little Pony but it also can be Major League Player to? and voice overs in video game mods? what about a video game with lexicography i don't think anybody thought that one up? and idea waterproof zip-up see through bag so it doesn't get wet in rain? encase of electronics? not alot other then that? it would be better to use a load and go card then a credit or debit card because i would have my own money on it not like a top up card or a one use card buy new one? but what if psn PlayStation network can have voucher receipts or cards on prepaid wireless modem? or UA-cam cards to use or voucher receipts abit like topping up your mobile phone making things easier and simple to what you want user friendly? like they come to your door you don't need to go to theirs like buying off online? save delivery fees? I've notice when i was on the PlayStation network the other day or internet using PlayStation 3 using gta iv EFLC it download and updated the game so i don't have the network feature to use multiplayer or instant play that was the whole reason to use it for like in stats network but add extras features like Netflix and so much more? the blueprints for old psone games on ps4 and ps5 network and ps4 pro and ps5 may have apps but can't play the original psone ps2 ps3 and ps4 games? need to go online on PC or ps3 or ps4 internet so you don't walk out empty handed? ps5 would have 8k graphics? probably what about original spyro the dragon psone- in 8k graphics test? or mods? like halo in red dead redemption with star wars mods in example? with My Little pony in Red Dead Redemption meets john marston mods? My lIttle pony in spyro the dragon psone as a player mods in gmod? ratchet and clank meets halo mod?

Entertaining but flawed... The OED encompasses all words in the English language... Including words derived from other languages, it doesn't distinguish between the origin of words... Music, technology literature and slang....it also is open to anyone to submit words...
    Bigger is not always better...
