She was unequaled as a swing dancer, as a complete performer in control of every visual and aural detail, as an ambitious perfectionist who aimed high and hit the mark.

As someone who remembers Ringling Bros Barnum Bailey, I think "The Greatest Show on Earth" is an underrated masterpiece, belonging in the same company as DeMille's "Ten Commandments." And it's Betty who embodies the pageantry, the backstories, the creative vision and courage of those who made the show go on.

Great Lady 👍. So many were jealous of her talent but she powered on and left them in the dust. Her exuberance was great, and not full of herself like most of her contemporaries.

I can only imagine how Betty Hutton felt having to go through the most unhappy times of her life over and over again! Tom Cooper should have done his homework. Her mother perished in a housefire, and Betty Hutton was addicted to drugs not alcohol! Betty Hutton had a terrible childhood! The 1952 classic movie The Greatest Show on Earth is not even mentioned! Too many people love to hear about only the tragedies in people's lives! I don't! I think it is cruel! I was born in 1978. I love Judy Garland, Betty Hutton and Doris Day! All three are legends! All three could sing, act, be comical, dance, and entertain! Tom Cooper does a good job interviewing but he should have done his research so Betty Hutton wouldn't have had to correct him on facts that other interviewers had covered! Thank you for posting and sharing this!

She was amazing & had it all! She had one of those voices that she incorporated her personality into so much that @ times...they would even have times when other actors would have lines kinda teasing her about her voice & how she's not soft,,,,but that was what was sooooo beautiful about her! She lived my dream....SHE STILL POPS UP AND REACTS TO QUESTIONS W/HER GREAT PERSONALITY...A LOT OF HER PERFORMANCE WAS JUST HER....THANK YOU BETTY......BOSTONRACHEL

For three years my daughter has been telling me she wants to be a singer (maybe it has something to do with the fact that I sang opera and musicals and used to sing various numbers to her as a baby). I keep telling her that if she wants to "make it big," then she should really take a number from performers like Betty. They don't get much better than the classics!

It was 1954 that the first live color TV special with Betty Hutton was produced. It was also the first year that color television sets were sold by RCA for the price of $1,000 in the US. Adjusted for inflation, that's $8,946 today. The average annual income in the USA was $3,960 in 1954. No wonder virtually nobody had color TVs at the time the color TV special was made.

Ethel Merman chopped Betty Hutton's big comedy duet with Arthur Treacher "They Aint Done Right by Our Nell" on opening night. Betty had brought down the house with it when the show was out of town. Betty had the last laugh. Buddy De Sylva took her to Paramount and she became an instantaneous star! Betty later snagged, "Annie Get Your Gun" the film version of Merman's smash Broadway hit!

She was a huge huge star with the working classes here in the UK ( much like Anne Miller was) - she was fun and seemed like one of the guys with no airs and graces

Truly an amazing lady. Hardly knew anything about her until recently. I am watching one of her movies with my mother with Dementia who used to be an actor herself. It really brings joy to her. ❤❤

Betty said Judy Garland did not want to do 'Annie'. Not true! Judy said she had her heart set on doing that part. She was just too worn out at that time and needed a break to rest up, but MGM would not postpone the starting date. Judy gamely started the film, recorded the soundtrack, and filmed two musical numbers. Sadly, she just could not keep up with the demands that a top notch musical film required and she was replaced by Betty Hutton.
