May his soul Rest in Peace. Hamza el Din was a great man in many respects. I first heard his old music in 1977 when I was in graduate school in Arizona. It was by chance. I loved what I heard, The piece was the Water Wheel. I bought one of his records and treasured it. More than 20 years later, living in San Francisco, another lucky chance happened. Hamza, had a solo concert and I went. After the concert, I waited for him backstage. I only hoped to shake his hands ‘and express my admiration. He embraced me and we became good friends. He was living in Berkeley and I in San Francisco. We frequently visited one another and he would play for me when we were alone. This is how warm and humble Hamza el Din was. His wife Nabra and my wife Patricia also became friends. One day I went to see him with an Oud in my hand. I just bought it and I only wanted to show it to him. He asked me “do you want to learn?” I said yes. He immediately tuned the oud and began taught me how to begin. He autographed my oud. I still have the oud hanging on my wall with his signature. I loved this documentary. All the stories in it, I heard first hand from Hamza. I really am lucky to have had Hamza el Din as part of my life.
