“Anarchy is no guarantee that some people won't kill, injure, kidnap, defraud or steal from others. Government is a guarantee that some will." Gustave de Molinari
I am 58 and it took me a full 50 years to read 100 books most on world and US History. With college, a wife, kids and a career it was not easy. I have two children in their early 20s and they are well read. However, I am absolutely shocked at what most of their peers do not know. I recently had an argument with one of my daughter girlfriends about Japanese interment camps in the American West during WWII. She stated that our government would never do such a terrible thing to its own citizens. Both my children were present and I told the three of them that could not use their devices. So, I pulled out my Encyclopedia Brittanica from the late 70s, had her find it, read it and she came away totally shocked. Neither my kids nor their peers learned about this inconvenient truth in high school nor college. We are failing our young people.
I wish Lex was a friend of mine. However, I'm not a fan of Ayn Rand's opinion. I am a lifelong learner through books if not through "formal" education. Students in a university are not being taught the important lessons she's speaking about.
Ayn Rand's books and philosophy are for young adult readers aged 14-16. By the time kids go to university they should have moved on to real philosophy, so it's a good thing universities don't teach her books
I recommend Watchmen for you if you feel that way. The character Rorschach was meant to be a parody of her philosophy. Alan Moore disliked the way he became a favorite for American audiences. But if you're familiar with her ideas the humor really leaps out.
Try talking out loud by yourself and see where free talking takes you. I sometimes wonder where the next word comes from. In a similar way as free writing, where does the next word come from? From a clump of cells in your brain?
Your higher self? I have heard musicians talk about how they didn't write the material. It just came to them. I can't remember who it was, but one guy said when an idea comes to him, he has to act on it asap. Or Prince will get it. Something to that affect. That really made me think. But then to hear it from writers as well sent me into overdrive. Where do our thoughts come from? I'm almost certain all of us have gibberish that we would never, ever think of. Apparently our thoughts come from our ego. Where does consciousness reside? I have also heard the analogy that our brain is like a radio, it picks up information. Interesting. Just my two cents.
Right off the bat, I'd argue she's just plain wrong. I think the style of teaching would not only be permitted, it'd be welcomed with open arms. And similarly, I think the students would embrace it too. I wonder if she's ever even bothered to give it a shot? Or has she just assumed it would fail and was too scared to find out?

The Censored Guide to Wealth on Bovolorus is one of the best things I've found recently

Who needs a book when you could have a fully mechanical metronome with zero variance/error that uses magnets.
Am I the only person who gets annoyed when people say they read something but they actually listened to an audiobook?
not annoyed but i also feel it’s not the same?
It all comes down to reading comprehension

Absolutely not by "reading" one book a week lol

Hell ya!
@philosoFreedomGaming yeah man those clumps can come up with some pretty good quips now and then. Try it out and see

I like books too tho. Meowwww.
