Sampras didn’t realize it then, but it was the beginning of the end. Safin US Open 2000, Federer Wimbledon 2001, Hewitt US Open 2001, Safin Australian Open 2002. Pete knew he had to retire.
The Safin generation was the first to embrace poly strings which allowed players to hit huge passing shots with a much smaller risk of the ball sailing long. These much faster and spinnier passing shots relegated the S&V game to be only an occasional tactic used to mix up your game, versus a playing style used over an entire match.

The truth is that the current court looks faster, what happens is that now the baseline game prevails, and now there are tennis players with much better return
The returns-of-serve are not better in today's tennis than in earlier or previous eras. It only appears to be that way because the slowed- down courts, lubricated-copolyestor strings, the larger Type3 tennis ball and the lighter/stronger high-modulous graphite rackets (lighter and stronger than earlier generation graphite rackets) have so cheapened the game by making it too damned easy for players to (1) flail on the ball and yet still keep the ball in the court and (2) avoid making unforced errors!
