      It could be said that Satin was the forerunner of a cataclysmic change in tennis. Tennis fans and sponsors grew tired of Goran Ivanisovic one n done type tennis.
      The trend upward in height and booming serves gave way to guys like the Big Three, all 6'2" or thereabouts. I still consider the tennis of the 80s n 90s more diverse and interesting, and pickle ball intrigues me more than Kyrgios throwing rackets.

      @@aaronaragon7838 . Yes the tennis of the 1980's-1990's (and prior to that period) was vastly more appealing than the so-called "tennis" of today. I haven't watched any of the players in the game since Federer, Nadal and Djokovic because the game is so dull and one- dimensional. I agree with Lendl when during the 2019 roundtable discussion with McEnroe, Becker and Wilander at the 2019 U.S. Open of the state of the game, Lendl stated that the game has become sanitized and McEnroe said that the game is too homogenized because the current players all play the same boring game. Becker was right when he said during that discussion that the players need to show their emotions more on the court and show some personality and that the rules are too damn strict prohibiting the players from showing their personalities more on court. As Lendl said of the famous incident between Becker and McEnroe at the 1989 Paris Open indoor tournament in which McEnroe started coughing to imitate Becker's constant practice of coughing on break points and (as Lendl stated) between an opponent's first and second serves - and Becker said to McEnroe during that match, "I have a cold" and McEnroe replied, "You've had it for 4 years now", "Did you guys know how entertaining that was for the rest of us?"😂😂😂😂.

    The Safin generation was the first to embrace poly strings which allowed players to hit huge passing shots with a much smaller risk of the ball sailing long. These much faster and spinnier passing shots relegated the S&V game to be only an occasional tactic used to mix up your game, versus a playing style used over an entire match.

    The speed of the tennis court looks the same as it is today. Marat beat Sampras with a game from the back of the tennis court. Sampras tried to impose his serve and volley game but Safin neutralized it. The truth is that the current court looks faster, what happens is that now the baseline game prevails, and now there are tennis players with much better return

    • @michaelbarlow6610
      @michaelbarlow6610 4 роки тому +9

      The returns-of-serve are not better in today's tennis than in earlier or previous eras. It only appears to be that way because the slowed- down courts, lubricated-copolyestor strings, the larger Type3 tennis ball and the lighter/stronger high-modulous graphite rackets (lighter and stronger than earlier generation graphite rackets) have so cheapened the game by making it too damned easy for players to (1) flail on the ball and yet still keep the ball in the court and (2) avoid making unforced errors!

    • @edwinivanrodriguez3769

      @jakehuang3545 3 роки тому +5

      If the courts were still fast you would see a lot more serve & volley and big servers dominating the tournaments like back then. The fast that S&V has completely died out (except as occasional surprise tactic) means the courts _have_ slowed down

    Although Sampras may have been a bit sluggish that day, I believe that even on a good day Safin would have won with the way he played - simply breathtakingly! Safin's swing vollies were the first time I'd ever see that shot and they made a big difference in overwhelming Sampras. Safin was so great that day that he evolved tennis to a new precedent with swing vollies becoming an important new weapon.
