Although I like II better. This song is an absolute master piece. For those who dont understand, James Hetfeild (the lead singer) struggles with drugs. He wrote unforgiven blaming his parents for all of his problems. In the 2nd song he blames the people around him. And in the 3rd, he starts to realize. It was me all along causing all these problems. In my opinion it's a beautiful story hearing how James went from being young and blaming others to when hes older now, realizing it was him all along.
-Uhm,- -don't- -think- -James- -is- -struggling- -with- -drugs- -but- -okay.- Alcohol is in fact a drug, I stand corrected. I apologize for any confusion.
"How can I be lost, if I've got nowhere to go..." "How can I blame you, when it's me I can't forgive?" I don't know why I just feel these sentences like printed in my soul.
Dude, this song came out when i was in a super dark place. These lyrics fit me perfectly. I found Jesus and was eventually able to forgive myself, patch up relationships, grow as i human being. I still come back to this song to remind me where i came from and to help me relate to others who struggle. I hope everyone who gets hit deep with these lyrics can find peace and comfort and eventually joy! God bless y’all.
I have shown this to my ex girlfriend when we were in love and she didnt understand How much this song mesnt to me, we are no long together but this song still means so much to me, maybe someday ill find someone to share Metallica with me

@Tibor Õsz I have listened to Creep a bunch of times and it never reminded me of Unforgiven. Not even the key is the same. If I try to listen hard enough, the chord progression might seem a bit similar.
Unforgiving 1- A man blaming others for his problems. Unforgiven 2- Man blaming 1 person for his problems. Unforgiven 3- The man finally realizes that he himself caused his problems.
This song is about their rise to fame (search for seas of gold) and the infamous card draw that took Cliff Burton’s life on that early September morning in 1986 when the bus hit black ice and tipped over
Unforgiven - i cant forgive the world Unforgiven II- i cant forgive you Unforgiven III - i cant forgive my self Unforgiven 4 - i cant forgive Unforgiven 5 - i cant Unforgiven 6 - i Unforgiven 7 - ...

Am i the only fucking one to not compare Old and New Metallica and just appreciate their musics AND their evolution throught 30 years of pure awesomness?
Exactly. I mean, i can agree that some of their post-black album stuff isnt that good, but i dont judge it only off of the fact that its different. If thats why people dont like it, then they might as well not like fade to black and nothing else matters too
There's no hate in my game. I loved RTL and MOP, but for different reasons than I loved the black album, and for different reasons than I liked Load and Reload. They were all damn good, but for different reasons. Some people just don't like change. The only album I didn't really care for was St. Anger, but there were a couple good songs on there, most of it just wasn't to my taste. Contrary to some, I loved S&M, though I've always been a fan of Michael Kamen's. RIP good sir, music is a little less amazing since your passing.
I'm a HUGE fan of Metallica and will never understand the hate they get on their new music. The Black album will always be special to me as it was my introduction to Metallica when I was 12-13, but that was over 20 years ago! The guys have evolved personally and professionally as anyone should. We're not going to have a new album from these guys reminiscent of Kill me All or RTL or AJFA or even Load for that matter! They are different as are the times we live in. Such a tired complaint from so many of you so called fans. Just enjoy this great band! As for this song; love it! James's vocals have really evolved through the years. It's like his range has smoothed out and pretty much all the anger in his voice has died. And that's fine! I'm sure the man is much happier in life today than he was when the first Unforgiven was inked. You can hear it in his voice. Keep at it Metallica! You are appreciated.
I cannot agree more sir. I can't stand the fanboy keyboard warriors your age nowadays that hate on all their new stuff, they just have their head stuck in their ass and got left behind in the 80's or something
My age and older. Some of the biggest loudmouths are over 40 from my experience. It's insanely annoying as it just shows not only their ignorance but a complete lack of music appreciation and diversity. My favorite comment is, "Metallica sold out"! Shut up! They're musicians whom happen to be the biggest heavy band of all time and they've (intelligently) evolved. Kill em All was made over 30 years ago. So was the DeLorean. Stop living in the past and appreciate what it was then. Not what it isn't now.
James Garvey exactly well said, I don't understand how they "sold out" with the black album. It was a fantastic album that everyone loved and it happened to get to number 1 on the billboard and sell 17 million copies. Just because it was so successful does that automatically mean they sold out? Hell no. I appreciate this band for everything they have done and I agree with you fully
+Awesome Star Wars Stop Motions and Other Random Videos The "Sell-Out" comment comes from the fact that there were really no guitar solos on the Black Album, the sharp stylistic change in playing and later image (look at the video of Until it Sleeps), etc. Also, if you look back at 90's interviews, Lars in particular kept saying "Metal is dead" You don't understand how people can say they sold out or hate them? Evolving is fine, but to do so suddenly while basically giving the audience you've had for the better part of a decade the verbal finger? that's pretty special.
Metallica really nailed it - forgiveness is such a great topic - - life is such a fuckup, old people full of regrets, the need to forgive others and yourself - you won't truly understand this until you are old
Jim Davies shit I learned this by the time I was 10 but what I've learned is people might say they forgive you but in all actuality they don't if you do wrong to someone it will always be there that fucked up little itch that they can't scratch and the same one that will plague you for the rest of your life
Justin Barbee what you said about forgiven mistakes always being there is true, I've made many myself, and I've forgiven them as well, but they're always there, always felt and remembered. After all, the wise will forgive but never forget.
BoggyTheWorm I LOVE them all! The Unforgiven 2 is my favorite Metallica song ever. I mean I like the other heavier songs too But I find the Unforgiven songs more epic then the hard core heavy mental songs. And I always choose epic songs over heavy mental songs.
Just wanted to make this most of my day. Played all 3 to call it a day. I usually wait for a month to listen again. Simply mesmerizing, sublime piece of work. Best of Metallica all 3 unforgiven IMO.
I don't know where I read it, in which Metallica song comments, but some asswipe said, "If Cliff were alive, he wouldn't have stood for this shit..." Alluding to the changes in sound, haircuts, Load/Reload, etc. I'm not sure about him cutting his hair, but the experimenting with the sound? I think he would have supported, if not demanded it. As for this song... That guy was right, Cliff wouldn't have stood for this...He played the piano... He would have taken a seat, and played! At least, until he strapped on the bass.
Metallica changed their approach to music, because of the nature of their journey through life. They have matured as they have become older & I don't think this is a negative thing or that it has tainted the quality of their music. I have matured beyond the 80's too, in my own personal life so their music still resonates with my soul loud & clear. Rock on Metallica!!!
Adam Spears Erhm.. Some don't.. I'm 19 soon to be 20 and I have heard Metallica since I was about 6 years old. One of the things I love about them is the way they can change their own sound and I still can go "that's Metallica" But I agree with you on the thing with most youngsters don't really understand that their songs and sounds are reflections of their journy throughout many years of experience! :)
Load is one of my favorite Metallica albums, not enough people listen to that album with an open mind. It's fantastic I like something about every song
You're right. And, oddly enough, they bust a sentence in the lyrics quite much alike something i say a lot when i'm depressed : "there's a certain sense of relief in having nowhere to go, cause at that point you know it's impossible to get lost". The lyrics don't really match my saying, but mean pretty much the same. This is a great song!
Sadest song by them. Tears me up ev.time.😕. The frustration/anger/sadness and emotion that Kirk displays in ANY song by them is PURE GENIUS...esp. w u consider he doesnt write the lyrics!!! Amazing how he can SUPERBLY interpret w his solos. This is what makes them a TEAM and KIRK highly underpaid !!! Those solos are the DEFINITION of the lyrics.EVERY NOTE...PERFECT GENIUS.
"Why can't I FORGIVE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!" 5:31 That shit gives me chills every time. I've always respected James as a lyricist and singer, but I never realized he could hit a B. Badass
davidofpiano423 Me too! I'm working on it...actually things have gotten pretty critical because of that (C-PTSD) so its made me take a hard look at myself, the people around me and I'm starting to shed the toxic crap! Im learning what is right and what is not and that it WAS NOT MY FAULT! And there was nothing I could have done...and working on believing it, living & thriving and helping others that cant help themselves. There's always hope, always!
davidofpiano423 same dude i love al metallica music thanks for pointing that out they are an amazing band kids these days wont know the bands we grew up listening to !!!
Cristian Stefan All the 10 songs (That Was Just Your Life - My Apocalipse) are awesome, my favs are: 1. Judas Kiss 2. The Unforgiven III 3. Suicide and Redemption 4. All Nightmare Long 5. That Was Just Your Life
My real dad passed away a few yesrs ago and today is the last fathers day before I finish school and go out into the world as a man 2020 has been a rough year but I still look the year dead in the eye knowing what my father wanted for me. This song reminds me alot of the relationship my dad and I have with lyrics that have a deeper meaning in its own way to me. I hope everyone stays strong and never gives up and loose hope. Set sail to find your treasure and know that no matter where you go, you can never be lost because its your journey and you are in control every moment. AND FEAR NOTHING
This is my number one Metallica song of all time. The build up and guitar solo is just epic. Kirk or James (don't know who recorded the solo) just shredded it.
The three unforgivin songs have different meanings the first is that you can't forgive anyone, the second is you can't forgive your lover, and the third is you can't forgive yourself
I don't care what any of you think. This is with absolute certainty the best Metallica album ever. The best written, produced, and performed by far. More mature and skillful than anything else to date. Musicians... Help me out here. Verify!
I hope you're joking when you say this is their best-produced album... or best performed for that matter, sure its got some good songs but this album is in no way stronger than any of their material up to The Black Album
People can say what they want about how this group's style and talent has evolved over the years. The truth is, Metallica was my first introduction to Rock n' Roll. You really can't match what they did with all 3 Unforgiven songs, much less their careers. They are truly Gods of Rock.
I can't stop listening to this song. It rings so true with not being able to forgive myself and others too. Lord give me strength in all facets of forgiveness. My father being on hospice has given so many reasons to self reflect within myself and our relationship.
How could he know this new dawn's light Would change his life forever? Set sail to sea but pulled off course By the light of golden treasure Was he the one causing pain With his careless dreaming? Been afraid Always afraid Of the things he's feeling He could just be gone He would just sail on He would just sail on How can I be lost? If I've got nowhere to go? Searched the seas of gold How come it's got so cold? How can I be lost In remembrance I relive How can I blame you When it's me I can't forgive? These days drift on inside a fog It's thick and suffocating This seeking life outside its hell Inside intoxicating He's run aground Like his life Water's much too shallow Slipping fast Down with the ship Fading in the shadows now A castaway Blame All gone Away Blame gone away How can I be lost If I've got nowhere to go? this solo make tears come out od my eyeballs...so much emotion...its like our live rolled up...smoked..cashed out and the resin smoked by a stranger...
this solo gave me a heart attack because it was so good, and now I'm dead. If I could listen to that solo on repeat over and over until it gets old, id never stop listening
This guitar riffs in this have to be my absolute favorite of Metallica’s entire body of work! I find myself humming the verse riff all the time especially.
F34RxxAlieska034 ' I know is awesome ... but I don't have yet the good timing for the solo , at least I can make the one metallica solo XD , its just hammeron is easy XD.
I love all 3 of the unforgivens but this one is my fav because of that EPIC solo. It gave me the shivers and I replayed it like 10 times that’s how good it is. I love this song and ever since I heard it I listened to it everyday since then that’s how much I love it.
All 3 of the unforgiven songs have meaning of acceptance. The first being acceptance from peers/friends. The second being acceptance in love or relationship. The last being self acceptance
Underrated song in my opinion 1st, 2nd were my favourite when i first heard all three, but 3rd one has the strongest message. All Unforgiven can be understood differently: some would say, that it is about growing up, some about, literary, fogiving a concrete person, some would read it as a methaphor of overcoming trauma, anxiety, depression. It"s very universal. It is a story of human, story of unbearable hate and pain, that exist in our minds. Its like therapy for me: except of simple songs, like "chil out", it reaches the deepest level of your personality, and helps to overcome the pain. Its not a remedy- its like a therapist, like someone who understands you. Some real words in the world of fake smiles.

This song is just as brilliant as the first 2(haters gonna hate) the only thing i miss is the horn from the beginning, that is like the signature of the series
The intro is the greatest thing I’ve ever heard, the first minute reminds me of a soldiers burial, and the final 30 seconds makes me think of the sadness, anger, and loneliness the family has to bear with for the rest of their life. And then the song starts
I never liked the unforgiven songs but I heard this song in Spotify for the first time and I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes this is my new favorite Metallica song

The piano intro and the solo. how can someone dislike this ?
I don't know where I read it, in which Metallica song comments, but some asswipe said, "If Cliff were alive, he wouldn't have stood for this shit..." Alluding to the changes in sound, haircuts, Load/Reload, etc. I'm not sure about him cutting his hair, but the experimenting with the sound? I think he would have supported, if not demanded it. As for this song... That guy was right, Cliff wouldn't have stood for this...He played the piano... He would have taken a seat, and played! At least, until he strapped on the bass.
and james sings so freakin awesome in this song
It really just does bring out the music huh?
Right its perfect
idk but apparently 2k persons disliked it on only this video
Metallica changed their approach to music, because of the nature of their journey through life. They have matured as they have become older & I don't think this is a negative thing or that it has tainted the quality of their music. I have matured beyond the 80's too, in my own personal life so their music still resonates with my soul loud & clear. Rock on Metallica!!!
That's how I see it but others don't thank you.
Yeah, these younger ones haven't journeyed through life long enough to get it!
I don't think Metallica's music has progressed. It certainly has changed, but not to the better. This song's all right though.
Load is one of my favorite Metallica albums, not enough people listen to that album with an open mind. It's fantastic I like something about every song
I personally favor this version due to the power of the lyrics. They mean a great deal to me. "How can I blame you when it's me I can't forgive?"
It tells a very good story that I can relate to
You're right.
Unforgiven II was sadder
That transition from James's voice to the guitar solo of Kirk is justtt perfect
Efe Aras I just checked it. I’m in love with it. ❤️

I forgot how amazing this song is. The "forgive me, forgive me not" part just gives me the shivers.
+ the solo! Gives me goosebumps every time!
Fredrik Leinebø Solli This is my favorite solo ever. It combines all of the styles for 30 years. On top of that is has the best opening.
That part rocks. Love how he starts off so soft and low, then goes all out when he says (or rather, _screams_), "Why can't I forgive me!?"
Most underrated Metallica song IMO
Vinnie Saint I'm sorry but it is the Outlaw Torn. This is a fact.
Escape From Ride the lightning i think.
Voltal SkyRacer And is my face becomes sincere.. beware-yeah! that song is the best of Load

the most underrated Metallica album at all times. I really love Death Magnetic. and this Unforgiven is there in my top 10 all time Metallica songs
death magnetic was #1 on the 200 billboard chart.....yea right underrated
Cristian Stefan for me too, this music is fucking great
all there albums go number 1 there fucking metallica

3. Suicide and Redemption
4. All Nightmare Long

My real dad passed away a few yesrs ago and today is the last fathers day before I finish school and go out into the world as a man
2020 has been a rough year but I still look the year dead in the eye knowing what my father wanted for me.

Death Magnetic will forever be one of the best albums they have ever put out.
SammehEatWorld I would argue with you if it was the best a lbum for you
I like death magnetic more than the black album
This is my number one Metallica song of all time. The build up and guitar solo is just epic. Kirk or James (don't know who recorded the solo) just shredded it.
mjsee08 that was Kirk on the solo. 😍😍
UNFORGIVEN III is a masterpiece. I'd love to hear more of THIS from Metallica on the next album.
when the time comes, I want the unforgiven trilogy played at my funeral. absolutely legendary music.
That solo opened a new asshole on my body.
3 now huh...
What is it supposed to mean? Sounds weird.
Stephen Potter hahahhahaha!!!! That's funny as fuck
The three unforgivin songs have different meanings the first is that you can't forgive anyone, the second is you can't forgive your lover, and the third is you can't forgive yourself

I liked 2 personally. I don't hate any of the songs in the trilogy.
Samwise the best produced is the black album with no doubt. Anyway the best written and performed is AJFA
Samwise This album was great, but master of puppets was awesome
People can say what they want about how this group's style and talent has evolved over the years. The truth is, Metallica was my first introduction to Rock n' Roll. You really can't match what they did with all 3 Unforgiven songs, much less their careers. They are truly Gods of Rock.
It was beautiful hearing James sing this sans guitar with just the orchestra on S&M 2 last week
such emotions, like he was crying inside, and I cried with him

How could he know this new dawn's light
Would change his life forever?
Set sail to sea but pulled off course
By the light of golden treasure
Was he the one causing pain
With his careless dreaming?
Been afraid
Always afraid
Of the things he's feeling
He could just be gone
He would just sail on
He would just sail on
How can I be lost?
If I've got nowhere to go?
Searched the seas of gold
How come it's got so cold?
How can I be lost
In remembrance I relive
How can I blame you
When it's me I can't forgive?
These days drift on inside a fog
It's thick and suffocating
This seeking life outside its hell
Inside intoxicating
He's run aground
Like his life
Water's much too shallow
Slipping fast
Down with the ship
Fading in the shadows now
A castaway
Blame
All gone
Away
Blame gone away
How can I be lost
If I've got nowhere to go?
Search for seas of gold
How come it's got so cold?
How can I be lost
In remembrance I relive
And how can I blame you
When it's me I can't forgive?
Forgive me
Forgive me not

+GamingJunkieHD Yeah He did a great job!
this solo make tears come out od my eyeballs...so much emotion...its like our live rolled up...smoked..cashed out and the resin smoked by a stranger...

+GamingJunkieHD I remember how it felt the first few times. Breathtaking indeed
5:35 is one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard.......
When a band can do both this and something like "For Whom The Bell Tolls" you know they are awesome!
That solo...the buildup, the pairing with James's guitar and Lars's drums, the shredding. One of Metallica's best solos no doubt.
That opening...... I have no words left to describe it... i-it's just breathtaking.
Wow, Lars' drumming sound fantastic in this; it's baffles me how people still talk shit about this legend!
It's because of And Justice for All and Jason lol
its hard to explain in words how meaningful this timeless masterpiece is, It's transcendent
This guitar riffs in this have to be my absolute favorite of Metallica’s entire body of work! I find myself humming the verse riff all the time especially.
I love these songs.....I see them as an evolution of their music and the songs should always be played I, II and III
that solo took it from 100-999999 real quick
Am I the only one who likes this one the best out of all the Unforgivens?

The build into the solo is some of Metallica’s best work! I want to tear the roof off EVERY time it hits
Cant listen to part 1 alone, have to listen to 2 and 3 as well. Also the intro to every song is incredible.

One of the greatest intro ever
Yeah, but too bad the rest is a bit meh, and doesn't really fit the riff.... imo.
The intro is the greatest thing I’ve ever heard, the first minute reminds me of a soldiers burial, and the final 30 seconds makes me think of the sadness, anger, and loneliness the family has to bear with for the rest of their life. And then the song starts
