    There are two types of hypertonia that describe muscle tone:
    Spastic hypertonia (spasticity): Exaggerated reflexes and muscle spasms increase with movement.
    Dystonic hypertonia (rigidity): Muscle stiffness doesn't change with movement.

    it is important to note in here spasticity is a velocity-dependent increase in stretch reflexes. So when a joint is moves at speed through it range of motion, here we it is possible to get a catch or spastic muscles.

    Hi, thanks for informative video. You mention pain realted to spasm. When I try to search for studies to find the relation between "spasm-higher muscle tone- pain- CP" I do not find any. Can you let me know about the studies which proove that pain is related to higher tone due to spasm?

    • @UtahNeuroRehabilitation
      @UtahNeuroRehabilitation  5 років тому +5

      That is such a good question!! I know of no studies that show that pain is related to higher tone due to spasticity. However, I have worked closely with people with spasticity for 33 years. Some people have a lot of pain with their spasms related to spasticity. Other people do not have much pain, even with really tight muscles.

    Hi Judy,
    Many thanks for your videos:)
    Could I ask you, that so spasticity is the cause of abnormal synergists??

    • @UtahNeuroRehabilitation
      @UtahNeuroRehabilitation  4 роки тому +1

      Abnormal synergies are due to an injury to the brain. The brain is the control center and when there is an injury, it is more difficult to isolate movements. So there is more synergistic movement. Spasticity also comes from injury to the brain. So often they go together.

    I had a spasm of my full right arm today 11/8/2019.i haven’t had stroke or a disease as far as I’m aware,but this april 2019 i did have a laceration of my upper ring finger it needed butterfly stitches & deep cleaning.could that have caused nerve damage & contributed to the spasm?

    • @UtahNeuroRehabilitation
      @UtahNeuroRehabilitation  4 роки тому +1

      The laceration on your finger would not likely cause spasms in your full arm. Sometimes people just get spasms or cramps for no clear reason.

      If you have spasticity, it is more likely that it will not go away without treatment. So it is rather rare. However, stretching and exercise can help to control it even if it doesn't go away.
