    Great video. One of your point was that there is a lack of revolution in developed countries even as religion’s popularity recedes. In my opinion, that is because people in developed countries have a relatively big middle class, who is becoming a petite bourgeoisie themselves in the globalized world. Therefore they have not started any revolution. Would like to hear your thoughts on this argument, cheers.

      Thanks!. I completely agree. It will be interesting to see what happens as more middle class jobs are outsourced to developing countries e.g. this is happening with some legal services & IT jobs - As the middle class declines in the UK and American perhaps we will see an increase in religious worship or at least a raising of class consciousness. Or the media will find another scapegoat/war to distract people with.

      @@thesociologytutor2449 I am afraid that we are already seeing that, and what has been filling the gap is culture war. Dem/ Republican have been rendered party of the 1% with liberal/ conservative flavors. Class consciousness has been slowly growing and articulated by the democratic socialist wing of Bernie Sanders, but yet to be mainstream. Need to spread more education about it.

      Yes, v. similar over here too. The culture war is being pushed by the media and some of our political parties. I find this website is a helpful source of media analysis www.medialens.org/

    Actually, crises are indeed bad for the ruling class, because they make people less productive. Hence, religion does help in this matter. (On regards to evaluation #2).

    Might there be examples of how marx's theory of religion be applicable today

    • @thesociologytutor2449
      @thesociologytutor2449  3 роки тому +3

      Most religions are still based on traditional texts so some would argue a Marxist theory of religion still applies. Most established religions teach patience and non violence, none support revolution. For example, in the UK and across the world, Covid has made the ruling class richer, but no established religions will suggesting workers organise and rebel against the system.
      The Catholic church preaches that being 'greedy' is wrong, but being rich isn't, which means it's easy for the ruling class to justify extreme levels of wealth.
      A counter argument maybe Islam's approach to finance and the fact they ban people from charging interest.

    Although I agree that religion was used as simply an “apparatus” and that it was used and abused by those in power to maintain their position, i do discredit Marx and his attack on religion which later planted the seeds of communism’s own failure as the ideology became so nihilistic and void of any meaning as they abandoned any higher meaning of life. In my opinion, Marx’s biggest mistake was 1) his hatred of Christianity and how he ignored that it was essential for Europe to not fall into nihilism and 2) his antidote of capitalism which was rushed and therefore had disastrous consequences on the world as it did not take into account the most important factor: human nature!!!!

    • @thesociologytutor2449
      @thesociologytutor2449  3 роки тому +1

      Hey James! The human nature debate is interesting. A Marxist would argue our core human is nature is cooperative and capitalism socialises us to be competitive. I'm not sure if i agree, but it's an interesting debate.
