The only problem is that only the main monitor will be recognized and turn on unless you turn on every single monitor including the TV. The TV absolutely has to be on, then you can turn off any of them and they'll stay on. Great guitar skills, Jay!
I remember taking typing lessons like 5th or 6th grade (1998/1999) on something that was essentially an ancient predecessor of this contraption. Basically a keyboard and a cheap black and green LCD screen, lol.

.... A usb dock, mechanical keeb, and external screen, in one.... I dare say you're gonna be hard pressed to find all of those for $200... I honestly don't think the price is all that bad.
I wonder what it would take to make a diy kit fit the same function. I think the hardest part would be screen compatibility and drivers/ software. A frame where you choose your own board switches caps and everything else then you slot in the monitor and cabling load the software and then go for the gold. The fan world face the extended area for the extra electricians and wiring, and hinge mechanism for the screen to connect to. I would love to see a ton of folks doing it from the same basic files/kit/frames or whatever.
I see a lot of people trying to say that Jay cracking the support could've caused it not to work. I doubt it, but if that were truly the case, then that's just a terrible design. At worst, it could cause the screen to not display anything, but for the keyboard to stop working too? Come on! Definitely not worth $600, or even $200 for that matter.
It is power delivery. Jay sometimes seems a noob. It worked on the laptop since it gave enough power over USB-C. USB-A can't deliver it. Just connect the thing to a proper USB-C adapter with 50ish watt power delivery and it will work. The USB 3 port from the computer can't handle it, and neither should. USB-A if rated for 4.5 watts and no connector in the world can handle more than 25W, even if connected to a power adapter in the wall socket.
@@marsovac There are dedicated USB-C internal port on motherboards which can handle 60Watts of power delivery, the case I am using the H500M has a single USB-C which can handle that. But these ports are usually solely isolated for front i/o as it's a seperate thick cable therefore not found on the rear ports. The H500M also has 4x USB 3.0 ports, 2 ports per internal header. Forward planning ftw lol, I bought the case about 5 years ago in 2019 before GPU sag became a thing (the case includes a adjustable GPU arm).
@@earthtaurus5515 That's a lot of power from the motherboard! Didn't know they can do as much. In any case, they can do this only through USB-C, and the USB-A standard cannot do that even if you stretch it as sometimes was done for mobile phone chargers. Anyhow Jay connected only the cable on the NON-PD USB-C and that would not have worked since it was A) non PD, B) maybe it could work but he gave the power to it over USB-A breakout, which perhaps was just another data USB-A for the SSD not meant for power.
@@marsovac Yeah it is, sometimes strangely you may not see that functionality listed on the spec list, the motherboard or bios manual is a decent place to look. I say decent, ASUS have a setting called "Alliteration" mode which is not listed in their bios manual for the X670E Crosshair hero. You need to use this mode when ASUS bork the x16 PCI-E lane toggle in their bios updates. Sometimes you need to force it to use PCI-E 4.0 by setting this mode to 'PCI-E stepping'. But doing so means all your fan headers ramp upto full speed as PWM gets disabled. If you revert back to 'Fan speed' to re-enable PWM you lose the ability to manually step the PCI-E lanes for PCI-E slots. Then there is the aspect of.... 'PCI-E stepping' getting borked and you need to revert back to 'Fan speed' just to get PCI-E x16 slot back to Gen4.... F*cking ASUS. Re: USB A, yup I'm aware 👍🏼 used to run a XP install for repairs off a USB HDD using some jiggery pockery with drivers and a slipstreamed install. This is long before Hiren's bootcd.
11:25 - DP definitely support HPD. Pin 18 is used for this on DP-Cables. Your cable obviously needs to support it. I know NVIDIA had an issue with this for a long time, if they still do than that actually really funny
If a DP cable is improperly made with pin 20 connected on both ends, unwanted behavior when hot plugging can occur. Pin 20 is DP_PWR which supplies 3.3V intended for dongles that often convert the video output to VGA or HDMI. If your DP monitor isn't hot plugging as expected, get a new cable, the one you have is improperly made.
@@nathan584 True, but stuff like this still happens. No reason to get a hate train rolling on a single dead product. And flipping the bird in the thumbnail really sells it like that, rather than valid criticism. Return it, and hope that the replacement does work.
I would have to agree with that. I was about to post something very similar. Seems like that either the cables not supplying enough power, that the device is not getting enough power due to a failure in the device, or that the device is not properly configured. It could be also a few other reasons, but those are probably the more likely options. I would just return it and then what I would do is ask for a new one to be sent back. If that one does not work then you return it and do not buy another one.
Obviously it was DOA. There's an internal power delivery issue. Either that, or the USB brick is garbage and sent the wrong voltage to the system, popping something or causing an over-current condition.
You should have tried a more powerful power brick with it first before returning it. The one that came with it looks way too small to make it function properly.
When you where telling the touch worked on the laptop it worked with the testbench too, when you tuoched the screen you selected two icons on the bigscreen! Epic games and blender are selected after you touched the screen.
Are you sure you've used the right USB port on your PC? Just because it's "blue" = 3.0 doesn't mean it's the right one. There are USB 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2 (and these can be with and without PD) that all deliver different amounts of power. And on motherboards, not all the sockets are connected in the same way. Depending on the manufacturer, there are different markings on them to differentiate between 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 or even a different color, e.g. red. Unfortunately, the manual for the motherboard is often the only thing that helps here. And since the device even has a PD = Power Delivery connection at the back, one of these must also be used on the PC/laptop because the others do not have enough power to operate all internal devices (display, keyboard, M2 SSD and other devices that are connected to this external device) at the same time. Because this on/off usually means that there is not enough power flowing, and not that it is defective. Especially when it comes to USB 3.x, you should read the device's instructions carefully because it is NOT just simple plug & play!
I think you're allowed one or two curse words in a video, just can't be within the first bit of the video and it depends on the length of the video. IDK. there's some algorithm at work that determines it on a per-video basis.
@jeffb.6642 Love it, so UA-cam determines how much we're allowed to swear now? 1 x Fuck per vid = OK, 2 x Fucks per vid and in first few minutes "nah, YT don't like that". I'm amazed these creators bother with this platform.
@@r1dds No F-bombs in the first seven seconds of a video is honestly pretty high on the most reasonable rules that YT has , and really just AdSense since it mostly just effects the ad revenue. There is much weirder stuff that they don't allow that they should, and also vice versa.
This would be really good as a cash register. You need only a printer for the receipt... if its works out of box. 😅 Cable direction sometimes matters. Audioquest have one way HDMI cables. You have to plug the right end in the right connector.
This thing would be amazing with a folded screen like the Samsung Fold. That way you get a regular sized screen. I imagine it would cost several orders of magnitude more though.
Yeah I kinda dion't understand it, stuff like this happens, why be hard on it. I could understand if if the failure rate was high or even a 2nd defective unit.
Could be a bad key switch causing the problem. Whenever LTT was doing the Intel Extreme Tech Upgrade for Sara, she built her own keyboard. Linus tried to use it but it caused the monitor to flicker. I know that’s likely not the problem but it’s worth checking out just to be safe.
Honestly was hoping this would work cause its actually really neat and can see some use cases for it. I hope you try exchanging it for another to see if itll work
Damnit, that is almost exactly the product I was searching for a year ago. Sadly it's still missing an ethernet port... but it has everything else a keyboard/hub would need.
Jay, it could really be that you broke it, when that cracking sound was heard while you tried to bend the display.. I mean, give it another try after replacing it (Amazon is amazing and you can send this one back)
Jay, I have an Asus ProArt Portable Pen Display (PA169CDV), it has similar connectivity, DP Alt mode port, USB PD Port, HDMI Port. My display does a similar thing as that keyboard when trying to use one of those break out cables on my desktop pc. When using those you have to also add another usb c cable to the PD port along with the DP Alt Mode cable to power it. I didn't like the idea of have all that just to use it, so I use a separate usb c cable that goes to the DP Alt mode port that is used for data in this scenario, a separate usb c cable that goes to the PD port, and an HDMI cable that goes to the HDMI port. I don't know what it is with these devices but when you don't use DP Alt mode, they seem to not request the same power as they would when using DP Alt mode connections, so you have to plug in two separate cables to the two ports to get it to request the proper power it needs. For your case you only have two ports so you'll need a 2-in-1 breakout cable that only does HDMI and USB data and a separate usb c cable for the PD port for power.
It's wild to see companies start to implement things the custom keyboard hobby has popularized. Which is good and bad The good: It made the hobby more accessible to others while adding variety in multiple cases (like with owlab and QK series, or omnitype and the bauer lite, or cannonkeys and the sat X)! The bad: A lot of bigger companies are trying to cash in on it and triple upcharge for crap quality, like the people that made this thing.
To the people saying it's not getting enough power. They tested it per the instructions, using the included adapter and cables, and it's not working. Devices should work per the instructions out of the box and not require troubleshooting. If it doesn't, it's a design flaw, or it's broken. Also, have a lookie at the reviews on Amazon, seems this starts being an issue after people have owned it for months.
Im only here watching because reddit said Jay nowdays click-bait. I had already skipped this video because I got no info what it was about. Then I saw that its a interesting product (that I would have missed because of the bad info) that was never tested because it "didnt work". Didnt even try with a different USB-C cable. Its very well known that USB-C hubs that handle "all" are very picky with the cable. Like people here stated already. I have seen many DELL and LG monitors that deliver power to a laptop having this problem.
Well if you only have one issue with tech so far you are lucky, for some reason since I was 15 and I'm now over 50, any possible bug in a device will be triggered if I get close. As such I have been the first in the world to discover bugs about certain phones and other tech items. Thankfully this weird ability rarely affect computers, but it might affect computer parts I am handling, which has led to a lot of weird issues over the years. One of the weirdest events was this computer cabinet that strangely had a charge, even without being connected to anything. Any hardware you put into that cabinet automatically failed, take it out of the cabinet and it worked fine. I later learned, after figuring this out that the computer in that cabinet stopped working after the house was hit by lighting. The charge the cabinet constantly kept up was about the same as an AA battery, but that of course shorted out anything you tried to put into it. I'll admit that one of my top 5 weird tech things that has happened to me. As for finding phone bugs, lets just say that way back nokia payed me to make sure I kept my mouth close as I sort of by accident discovered a way to brick all their smart phone simply be starting 3 apss in the rigtht way. It don't matter if it is a personal item or a huge machine, if there is a bug and I am around, that bug will show up sooner or later without me having to do anything but being there. Having lived with that issue my whole life, I have figured a way to limit that effect, the trick is to never buy brand new tech, wait a year to buy when all the bug or most of them has been found by others. It also helps a lot that I can now read up on most things I am thinking about buying online even if I am buying it from a store. Take my freezer, that think has its own life, so it now end then reboots, which wouldn't be so bad if the booting up sets up the freezer as a cooling effect at 0 C instead of a freezer at -18C. So I have to check that each morning to make sure it hasn't shifted over and I check it each time I do open the thing too. 3 times now I have found that it has happened, but thankfully it's not all that hard to shift it over to the normal way instead of some extra functionality you could setup, which each reboot activates due to some but in the programming i my best guess. It's a bit annoying, but once I figured out what to look for, it's just a part of what I have to live with and have lived with my whole life. My point is, if you can complain, what should I do?
Had a couple of mini PCs already that I use for astrophotography. The primary suspect for boot loop and even no boot was always shoddy power supply. They really need to pay attention what power supply they give out with these units. Amps matter and those cheap charger bricks from 2014 are worthless POS to deliver steady amps and voltage.

Really? My system hates dp, quite often had to restart to get it to work. So yeah, my monitor isn't handling dp properly, or my graphics card is up to some shit? I dunno, but I changed back to hdmi and it's fine now. So congrats you all have systems that handle things properly, that's not always the case

Maybe RMA it, get a replacement, and test it without crack-snapping the screen first thing out of the box?
Was thinking the same thing.
It has a screen tilt button on the side, the snap was the sound of it being popped passed its locking gear

@@FcoEnriquePerez As if using windows 11 isn't bad enough smh.
It could be either one, although J probably didn't say what he meant. Yes, I know--USB is supposed to be a fixed (or controlled variable) set of voltages depending on which spec is implemented. BUT, these no-name devices on Amazon are seldom even UL certified. I wouldn't trust them to deliver either volts or amps at rating. They don't care--they burn down someone's home, they'll just delist and re-incorporate under a new business name before a lawyer could even be called.

Nice guitar work Jay; didn't know that you played
at 12:31 you see jay talking about the seeing the cursor moving around on the laptop but if you look at the monitor you can see the cursor move on the test bench as well highlighting apps on the desktop 😂

I'd have been happy to hear some more JayPlayzGuitar ... just not anything by Oasis, lol!
The main reason I chose an Asus GPU was that it has two HDMI ports. HDMI 2.1 doesn't have DSC. I have three monitors and a TV plugged in it. The only problem is that only the main monitor will be recognized and turn on unless you turn on every single monitor including the TV. The TV absolutely has to be on, then you can turn off any of them and they'll stay on. Great guitar skills, Jay!
I thought screens attached to keyboards were meant to be a laptop... Then Jay entered the chat 😂
That was a nice wholesome ending with Jay playing the guitar while Nick was boxing that POS back up.
This is the way laptops used to be early 90s
I remember taking typing lessons like 5th or 6th grade (1998/1999) on something that was essentially an ancient predecessor of this contraption. Basically a keyboard and a cheap black and green LCD screen, lol.
@@canman87 Yes, those were called and sold as "Word Processors". There were a few of them in the typing classroom at my high-school in a room full of electric typewriters ... before they were all replaced by XTs (in a form factor like an Amiga 500) on a token ring.
@@canman87 Sounds a bit like the Amstrad PPC640, 640k of RAM, twin 720KB floppy drives, built in 9600(?) baud modem and a tiny green LCD that was effectively a mono CGA screen - pretty sure the CPU was an 8 bit XT equivalent.

.... A usb dock, mechanical keeb, and external screen, in one.... I dare say you're gonna be hard pressed to find all of those for $200... I honestly don't think the price is all that bad.
Apparently, hard pressed to find one that works, though.

11:25 - DP definitely support HPD. Pin 18 is used for this on DP-Cables. Your cable obviously needs to support it. I know NVIDIA had an issue with this for a long time, if they still do than that actually really funny
I was wondering WTF he is going on about.... I'm on a radeon no issues with DP on here LOL

Love the guitar at the end.

YES. 12:32 Jay missed that looking the other way, but Phil come on
Are you sure you've used the right USB port on your PC?
The guitar part killed me 😂😂😂

I think you're allowed one or two curse words in a video, just can't be within the first bit of the video and it depends on the length of the video. IDK. there's some algorithm at work that determines it on a per-video basis.

Damnit, that is almost exactly the product I was searching for a year ago. Sadly it's still missing an ethernet port... but it has everything else a keyboard/hub would need.
Jay, it could really be that you broke it, when that cracking sound was heard while you tried to bend the display.. I mean, give it another try after replacing it (Amazon is amazing and you can send this one back)
Explain how that would break all functionality of the device?
Thanks Jay!!
Didn't know you were also a musician... nice Martin!
Love the guitar outtro...should keep that going..
This thing looks cool. I wanna see it actually work
It's wild to see companies start to implement things the custom keyboard hobby has popularized. Which is good and bad
The good: It made the hobby more accessible to others while adding variety in multiple cases (like with owlab and QK series, or omnitype and the bauer lite, or cannonkeys and the sat X)!
I like the reference to old Top Gear bit from Clarkson "So I went on the internet this wekk and I found *this*" to open the video xD
The cracking sounds like a speaker turning on and off i think that you need to try a more powerful power adapter
My immediate thought was 3d modellers using it for node editor leaving full realestate for viewport. Or for the parametric timeline in cad/cam.
Stayed for the JTC live session at the end. Really good now for such a short time.
All laptops are screen attached keyboards. Or keyboard attached screens. Whatever.
Jay I love your Martin, please do a setup to it so it sounds proper. Thanks!
I feel this ones alittle off i would rma it and give it a fair chance. It looked decent up until it just didnt work.. and the ole screen crack surely didnt help
It may well be faulty from factory. Return it and get a replacement to see if it is just a bad one!
