UCL Finlay here following in the tradition of other contestants posting here (thanks Mr Pumpkin having these episodes on UA-cam is such help for revising to prepare for the show and getting it out to friends not in the UK) - well I think the only more stressful experience in my life than watching that back was playing it the first time. Still not quite sure how we did that - trinity were mighty opponents whose performance in previous rounds had reached us before we even played this round, not to mention incredibly gracious and friendly ever since. Not sure how I pulled some of those out of my brain before my name was called (as you can see most of my memory of to pimp a butterfly is pretty rubbish) and found myself playing along getting more of trinity’s bonuses than our own. (I’m very pleased with the confidence I guessed the dalloway principle with when I was only thinking of time in the Virginia Woolf novel) hope you’ll be watching the remaining rounds and thanks for all your support :)
Exhilarating match, my heart sank at Taoiseach but you rallied brilliantly with back to back starters that sealed it. You had to take some risks with swift answers to pull ahead! Really hoping to see a UCL - Imperial showdown!
Hell of a performance all round, though. Honestly I thought you guys were toast and a minute later it was tied, then the race to the finish... Very well done.
You and your team’s astonishing and quite suspenseful performance aside, I did appreciate how perfectly color-coordinated your attire was. Congratulations on your win and I’ll definitely watch the upcoming matches!
Hello everyone, it’s UCL Hall here adding to Finlay’s comment - what a match!!! I really hope you enjoyed it, this is the one I’ve been most excited to watch so far as I’m sure you can see why. We knew this match would be very challenging going into it, but I think when we found ourselves 100 points behind it was going a lot worse than even we had anticipated it might. Thankfully, the UCL spirit kept us going and some aggressive and perhaps slightly risky buzzing paid off and gave us that edge over Trinity in the end. I am very glad I got that osprey question, as it is a running joke in the team about my weirdly niche British bird knowledge - I could feel the team looking over at me and knew I had to pull something out the bag. This match was ridiculously stressful, I knew something big was happening when I felt my heart beat at the same speed as one of the fast music questions! It was incredible fun though, as every match with my incredible teammates Ali, Tayana, and Jacob was, and the team from Trinity were incredible opponents and all-round lovely people. Keep tuned to see who we play in the semi-finals and what happens… Edit: I’ve seen a few people here and on Reddit say this sounds like me spoiling our semi-final match. I promise there is genuinely nothing to infer from what I say about whether we win or lose it, I’m just happy to have another match to enjoy playing and watching no matter what happens! Hope you enjoy when it comes around - I know I will, regardless of whether we win or lose. All the best!
This was another very exciting and close match. It was definitely unfortunate to end up losing after such a strong start, but that comeback from UCL is greater than any other I've ever seen, and at least we still have another chance. It was close enough that a single question going differently (and there were some close buzzer races) could have changed the outcome of the match, although that's also true of a lot of our matches. UCL were definitely a very nice team, though, so congratulations to them!
You still did unbelievably well! I am so impressed with you and your incredibly likeable team. When a team starts to come from behind like UCL did, having nothing to lose, they tend to be impossible to stop. Just like the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 ACLS series against the New York Yankees. I
“I am so impressed with you and your incredibly likeable team.” Me, too! And the teamwork of Trinity - Cambridge is superb as well. They’re totally in sync.
Jaksina looked so unhappy at the end (27:35 to 27:37). Just pure stone-faced misery. I suppose I'd be upset too if I got as many right as he did but my team still gave up a 105 point lead.
25:00 kudos to UCL here for quickly passing or giving their immediate best attempt answers, instead of taking their time, despite the fact that they had the (narrow) lead and delaying would be to their advantage. The kind of sportspersonship all teams should aspire for.
What a comeback. It looked like Trinity were gonna run away but that answer by Izzatdust to get them to 0 from -10 just woke them up and you could see Trinity were getting more and more nervous as time went on and Kang was probably just beaten to the buzzer by Finlay on a couple occasions. This was probably the best match of the tournament since Manchester's win over Trinity.
Lol, UCL trailed as much as 105 and were down by 65 points a bit after the music round, but this game is a reminder that 65 points in University Challenge is just a 3 possession lead
Absolutely astonishing comeback victory from UCL. Such a well-rounded team. I loved their tendency to avoid time wasting, even with a slender lead so late on. Played the game in the right spirit throughout. Two very strong teams, and almost the carry-job of the series so far from the imperious Jaksina. Top entertainment!
Finlay is like a footballer who makes several mistakes before half time but scores an important goal after half time lol, congratulation UCL you all did really greatt
That was not good for my heart! What a fabulous match, both teams semifinals worthy for sure. Thanks for uploading and thanks to all contestants for the entertainment.
Uhhh you mean we tactically lost so that we could maximise our TV appearances, right...?? 🥲 In all seriousness, huge congratulations to UCL. They were incredibly fast on their buzzer which paid off in the end when they pipped us to a few starters. The UCL team are all such lovely people and glad to have been part of yet another nail-biting UC match (becoming a bit of a pattern with us😅) with them.
Great captaining, very much looking forward to seeing you again, although you made it a bit too exciting for my heart - had to pause the video a few times!
Ha, I was very happy to hear that your team would appear yet again! I _really_ liked how you and your fellow teammates were fully engaged with each other, attributable, I’m sure in large part, to your terrific captaining. Perhaps it’s unsporting to say so but Trinity - Cambridge is one of my favorite teams this series. (Imperial is the other.)
Some people will do anything for a little extra TV time. 🙂 Young Mr. Kang, you are a credit to your team - all of you are wonderful of course. Good luck in the next rounds. Will eagerly await another heartstopping nailbiter. Valium at the ready.
What a match! And what a comeback from UCL. Behind by more than 100 points with not even Zero as their starting point when they got their first starter correct. It was lovely to see Hall and Finlay getting negatives yet being the MVPs, especially Hall. Not to forget they had so many negatives, more than Trinity, yet didn't back down. Also special mention to Jaksina, who carried this round.
Thanks again, CosmicPumpkin! What a match! What an incredible comeback! And yet, I don't think we've sen the best from either team yet! Good that we get to see them again. My best to both teams, and each individual.
I think my heartbeat fluctuated too much during that game ;). Really thought UCL had blown it at one stage on -10 with just under half the time used up. But despite that and FIVE penalties, like Lazarus, they rose from the dead with a good 18/30 bonus to semi-compensate :). That's the second time Trinity has completely squandered a big lead - their chances are still good in the repechage but not sure they'll win it all now - maybe the first all-London final since 1996? We'll just have to see.
I've fallen in love with the Trinity team so the unexpected outcome was a bit of a heartbreak. Jaksina's demeanor at the end says it all... But what can I say except well done UCL, that was an incredible comeback!
I properly thought UCL was done for, loved their comeback so very much! I really hope Trinity get through as well, they're one of my favourite teams this series. Great watch :)
Thanks Cosmic P! Before the match I predicted a UCL win but when they were 100 points down I was doubting my bet! Well done to UCL for a significant comeback but sorry for Trinity who just seemed to nod off in the second half!
What an exciting match! Terrific comeback by UCL. Two excellent teams, congrats to all..great performance. I really jumped when l heard the gong ( Was secretly hoping for a tiebreak!)
Thanks yet again Cosmic. Smash a like everyone. I'm in the US, and get to enjoy this possibly at the same time (here) that it's shown in the UK. Monday comes and it's University Challenge day for many of us thanks to you.
It should be done. After all, University Challenge is based upon the U.S. television show G.E. College Bowl, which aired from 1959 to 1970. At about the same time, there was a U.S. television show which featured college debating teams. A debating team came here from Oxford to face the U.S. champion. All I remember was that the Oxford team didn’t take the match seriously. They were more interested in clever remarks than logic. But, yes, I wish there would be competition between U.S. and U.K. teams - that would be great television.
there have been some one-off matches, I think the Imperial team that won in 1996 played against Michigan who had won the (non-televised) College Bowl that year
Looks like the captain is just signalling to the other two that Jaksina has got the answer. It's not like they're conferring. The rule says the starters are individual efforts, which it still was. I guess any team could have agreed on hand signals ahead of the game to indicate who should and shouldn't buzz.
Good call. Kang just seemed to be telling the other team members to let Jaksina answer. But as far as I can judge no information passed to or from Jaksina himself before he did answer. Still, no conferring should mean no conferring whoever does it and whatever it's about.
It's not considered to be consulting. There was a debate on this some years ago after a similar incident. Kang did it earlier in the game, he held his hand up when the question continued after an incorrect interruption by UCL. As long as nothing is said to indicate the answer it's deemed OK. It's just clever answer management.
Does anyone else feel like Trinity's captain holding up his finger (while the starter was still being read) to tell the others to hang back and let Jaksina buzz in falls under 'conferring', or is it just me?
Since they're not pondering and working out the answer together, I don't think it's strictly conferring. It's a simple gesture of "don't buzz, I know the answer."
Thanks from Allen, Texas. Apart from being an absolute barn-burner, the questions were super tough. I got one no-answer but I barely made a handful of correct answers. I did notice some hand gestures and imho that's not quite cricket.
One gripe I have against Trinity is the signalling during a starter to decide who will answer it. It is unfair and against the spirit of the game, when the rules clearly say "you may not confer". Other teams have done it too, so I guess the fault lies with the producers for not enforcing their policies or communicating properly to the teams. Now that that is off my chest, thank you, UCL, Trinity and Cosmic Pumpkin for that nailbiter.
"Conferring" is discussing the answer. Signalling who answers starter question is not conferring. Also, it would be difficult to monitor fairly, teams will work out secret signals to use.
@@sunway1374 classic letter of the law vs spirit of the law dilemma. The spirit should always supercede the letter. Sure, teams could come up with clever ways to signal, but if it is clearly stated that any form of communication is prohibited during starters, that should cover it, and I'd say most people would adhere to it. As I stated in my earlier comment, I'm not faulting Trinity here. Its probably something the producers should address to maintain the spirit of the game.
@zaphbrox8239 i am not sure your interpretation of the spirit of the rule is accurate. It could be only your opinion or preference. I have watched UC for 30 years. Signalling does happen although usually more subtle. It's never an issue.
@@zaphbrox8239 Going to have to agree with the other commenters there: if the spirit of the law was to prevent any and all _communication_, then the law would state exactly that. Conferring relates to discussing the answer itself, not who is going to answer, and I also don't see how this would be unsportsmanlike or hurt the spirit of the game.
@nope2dat & @jh_4562 - you kiddos and your teammates are the bees knees. Excellent match - so many super tough questions. You were up against a superb team, so great to see you pull it off. Looking forward to seeing you in the weeks to come. Congrats to all and a big thanks to CP for the up. My heart has been running a little slow lately so this definitely got it kickstarted! 😵💫
I think I've said this before, but UC really needs to have a studio audience again - canned applause simply doesn't work in brilliant and exciting matches like this one. The worst of Covid is in the past; Millionaire has gotten *its* studio audience back; and it can't be *that* much of a drain on UC's budget - so why not?
As always, there's someone shouting an answer =P. In this episode in my case: Sacco and Vanzetti !!! =P. (Just because my family is from Italy, though I'm chilean anyway). =P
@@AylaFMD Studying medicine at a top-tier university is a pretty good indication of intelligence. More so, I dare say, than the ability to recall facts coupled with a fast twitch response.
9'40": "mise en abyme" is an expression (locution in French) but definitely NOT a hyphenated term. If it was written with hyphens it would actually be called a word (like chef-d'œuvre, arc-en-ciel or pot-pourri which are "mots composés"). Always disappointing and a bit worrying to catch the researchers that prepare the questions at fault, and this one was especially easy to check and avoid. Hope they are more accurate in the fields I don't know about... Otherwise an epic match, congrats to both teams!
Brilliant match!! i had the feeling there were tonnes of Shakespeare questions this round? In contrast to UCL's last round where Hall and Izzatdust carried it, this was Hall and Finlay's round. Above all I'm just glad we can get to see Ms. Sawh again (seesaw?). I swear she gets more beautiful every round.
Incredible comeback! Bravo to UCL for not simply packing it in. Great spirit. On the other hand, let's just say I'm not heartbroken to see Trinity - and especially the petulant Jaksina - lose.
Teams used to take the game seriously, but the quality is declining. The teams laugh at their ignorance instead of coming back with a further scope of knowledge. Some of the teams seem almost brought in at the last minute. They spend far too much time dithering, come in without answering, and stutter far more than needed. Sawh always seems perpetually confused which is not a sign of a good captain.
These students are unbelievably knowledgeable and the questions are exceedingly hard. No one can know everything about everything so cut them some slack!
Jaksina did not get a single question right from that genetics block - and he studies genetics. Most of his knowledge is due to the fact that he comes from that part of Europe. And there is something off-putting about him.
So if being from "that part part of Europe" means that you automatically get everything right that has to do with it, why don't get people from the other part of Europe get everything right that has to do with that part? Moreover, since when are Jaksina's answers of Franz Hals, Buenaventura Durutti, Sacco & Vanzetti, Surrealism, President of Ireland, and Indus River connected to Eastern Europe? There were only two answers that he gave that were linked to Eastern Europe, namely Bulgaria and Bakunin. And you don't learn about those facts in high school in Poland. Pal, there is a lot that is off-putting about you!
@@slightlygrouchy Because I do not recall seeing anyone else from Poland, Russia, Baltic states, ex-Soviet block. Because such questions are considered exotic and difficult per se (obviously not for someone from that part), meaning that they go less in depth than they do with Western Europe/USA questions.
@@s-6019 This is just completely unintelligible nonsense. They have had other team members from Eastern Europe before. And the questions that you are referring to don't differ from the others in any way. And they are definitely not easy either (Bakunin easy? are you kidding me?) Jaksina also got a whole bunch right that had nothing to do with Eastern Europe!. Moreover, there were only two that were connected to Eastern Europe. Also plenty of the questions connected to the West are fairly easy. But often, still nobody gets them correctly.
@@slightlygrouchy Given that you find what I wrote "completely unintelligible", I am not surprised you find "Bakunin or Kropotkin" incredibly difficult. Even though that is fairly common knowledge over there. I do not really remember "a whole bunch of other questions he answered", unless it is something very easy. Anyway... having that completely annoyed face at the end that says "I am doing everything for you and you cannot even get one question right", is completely off the mark.
@@s-6019 Prove to me that anyone from Poland or anywhere else from Eastern Europe who went to high school finds those answers easy. And prove to me that those questions bear a connection to Poland and the rest of "that part of Europe" and and these things are covered over there in school or elsewhere in public life. And prove to me that those qustions are generally considered asy! As for what you remember, nobody gives a toss. There were several over the last few years. As for his "face": he was disappointed, and sometimes it's impossible for anyone to hide that disappointment. No shame in that! You yourself are even unable to cope with a single UA-cam video without launching into a personal, shameful attack and without posting lies. And you have completely ignored the fact that you lied about most most of his answers bearing a connection to Eastern Europe, too.

It does seem a bit like collaboration, for sure.
Perhaps the rules as written do not cover ‘silent instruction’ of this sort.
I was looking for this comment. Definitely counts as conferring IMO, they did it at least 2-3 times during the match
Since they're not pondering and working out the answer together, I don't think it's strictly conferring. It's a simple gesture of "don't buzz, I know the answer."
What an amazing match!
Mr. Jaksina knows his anarchists!
BEST MATCH EVER
Thanks from Allen, Texas.
Apart from being an absolute barn-burner, the questions were super tough.
I got one no-answer but I barely made a handful of correct answers.
I did notice some hand gestures and imho that's not quite cricket.
Hearing Rajan trying to pronounce Väinameri and Saaremaa was a welcome smile this morning ☺️
Are you Estonian?
Amol had it cranked up to 11.
Who, when and why did the powers from above ban the internationally known and commonly used terms BC and AD?
Fantastic game.
I think non-verbal signals are fine, especially when it's as simple as "don't buzz yet". You can't discuss the question just with hand gestures.
Jaksina not happy at the end there.
great match!
Amazing!
Sawh is heavenly
Sexy voice as well
What a Match!!!
Great game...
Well done UCL…I am gobsmacked…but I think Trinity is the better team
@nope2dat & @jh_4562 - you kiddos and your teammates are the bees knees. Excellent match - so many super tough questions. You were up against a superb team, so great to see you pull it off. Looking forward to seeing you in the weeks to come. Congrats to all and a big thanks to CP for the up. My heart has been running a little slow lately so this definitely got it kickstarted! 😵💫
Wow, what was that?!?!? 😮
I pre-called S&V when I heard “anarchists” as the category. That trial used to be taught in US history.
Thank you.
Chester's nowhere near the Cotswolds!
Wow!
7:08 😶🌫️
(i'm not thinking anything, you're thinking it)
ew
Amazing comeback.
Amazing meltdown.
I was stressed after the mistake from finlay but he redempted himself so its ok
Jaksina is phenomenal!
phenomenally bratty
I really wish I were on UCL's team so i got the chance to impress Sawh and get nothing correct
Who agrees Ali Izzatdust has the most beautiful voice
Perhaps not those who remember King's College London Rashid.
fair enough!
@@JanKosinski-x8h Don't get me wrong. I'd love to sound like Izzatdust, but Rashid was on another level.
Sawh is a rare beauty and brains combo
Also leadership.
Intelligence? She got 0 questions right including a basic medical question in the previous round despite her studying Medicine
@@AylaFMD Studying medicine at a top-tier university is a pretty good indication of intelligence. More so, I dare say, than the ability to recall facts coupled with a fast twitch response.
I will give her only beaty
Very Nice
yikes henderson literally did not contribute at all. even on the japanese related questions
5’23” Kang: why are you making such a fool of yourself?
Birkbeck Macmillan!
Sawh is gorgeous
Incredible comeback! Bravo to UCL for not simply packing it in. Great spirit. On the other hand, let's just say I'm not heartbroken to see Trinity - and especially the petulant Jaksina - lose.
Petulant??? What are you on about?? That’s ridiculous!
27’40” LOL Yaksheena doesn’t look happy :))))
'Jaksina'
@@ellentronicmistress4969 LOL :)
I can see these two meeting again in the final.
no way
Imperial have to shit the bed hard to make it happen though
I’d always rooted for the winners before tonight but that guy on the left is really annoying!!! I still like the rest of the team!!
Can you do better yourself? Anyways we are through to the finals so yes we are actually good
UCL sawh kinda useless, she always relying on izzadust
Thunder Cat. Useless scholars.
Finlay in the clutch.
Izzatdust?
No, it's the Chemical Brothers!
Gave Sawh Troilus and Cressida and shouldn't have.
