I carried a SINCGARS too but I never recall the KY-57 being used with a 'manpack'. All of the SINCGARS models could be deployed in 'manpack' configuration. I recall only those designated as a PRC-119C/E/F (i.e. RT-1523C/E/F) were ever carried. Carrying a crypto device in the field was something we never did. The models I used already had an integrated KY-57 built in. And, just an FYI, the PRC-119 was not fielded until 1996.
@@AngryMarine-il6ej yep, crypto and frequency hopping was built in, just needed programming, typically via the ANCD and time sync via PLGR. Our division G6 gave a load of grief and refused to allow issue of the PLGR, his rationale was we should all know how to navigate without a GPS. When the CG asked why we weren't frequency hopping, per his orders, I was kind enough to show him the memo from his G6, who was shortly thereafter directed to retire. Got the unit, got time sync, we hopped merrily along.
if it's a SINCGARS radio, it has to keep up, it's part of a standard. They came with crypto, frequency hopping capability and were programmed using an ANCD that really didn't change much between radio iterations. This ain't pop's PRC-77 single channel tone squelch toy that to add crypto needed an add-on module and programmer for the module.
Its funny how some are using the word Nostalgic to describe this radio when the technology is light years ahead of what we were using when I was in service.
Thank you for your comment. I live in Japan. Many years ago, I traveled to the United States. I had seen them at a flea market held every Sunday in the parking lot of a munitions company building near Gardener, California. Recently, they have been banned from being exported from the U.S., so they are no longer available in general. (The FBI and CIA track the radios individually.) It seems that U.S. military personnel stationed in Korea and Japan are bringing in small quantities by hand-carry, but they are expensive and illegal. We will have to wait for a long time for collectors of military radios from the era of no restrictions to give them up.
@@jimpiper5297 they do sell civilian models on ebay. Called the PMR-119 or you will occasionally find the real deal on ebay. Its just a matter of looking for it.
I carried both those radios in 1992. I can still remember the functions. I also had an item called a KY57 hooked to the Singar for secure comms.

I remember using the Vinsons in the late 80s mid 90s before SINCGARS

OMG, clearly so powerful but out of the reach of us mere mortals.
