Thanks, buddy 👍 It does wind me up when some well "respected" channels give out duff info and the poor viewers lap it all up as gospel! Have a super week!
Some fantastic tips there. Thank you! I particularly like the tip for the leggy tomato plants in a 2 litre bottle. And guess what. . . . I just happen to have a leggy tomato plant and an empty 2 litre bottle to hand, so that's my task for today 😊🍅🍅🍅
Hi digy/Steve this is the best video out there of explaining about tomatoes and yes I have watched a lot. I do love spill the beans and I think this one is going to get high viewings for you. Any one would learn more in this video than looking at a thousand.
This was very imformative. I will add that I've lived in the northern states except for a brief time in Georgia and I had never heard of rooting suckers until recently, and all from UK sources. There just isn't enough time for a second planting.
Hi Steve Sat here in Trevone Cornwall on a blustery rainy Saturday trying to catch up with watching videos. That was an Excellent video, very plain and informative, must admit when I first started gardening (many years ago) I did not know about the leggy tomato tricks. Thanks again. 👍👍👌👌🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅
Cheers Rob. It does amaze me how many "respected" channels give out totally the wrong info on growing tomatoes. I do feel sorry for their viewers! Have a great holiday mate 🎡🎢
Hey Steve, Regarding the side shoots, I always remove the side shoots from the F1 tomatoes and place them in water and plant them after 10 days when many roots have formed. This is how I buy 2-3 F1 plants and end up with at least 12 or so in the end. Approx 10 free plants every year. Really great video today so much good info. Cya next thyme, Steven
Afternoon Steve great video full of information mate I have just lost 7 tomatoe plants in my greenhouse I think it’s to much water have a good week 👍🥔🌱
Excellent video Steve, although I'm not sure about leaving on some of the side shoots, having said that you did caveat the suggestions fairly comprehensively : All the best - Steve
Cheers Steve. Strangely, the UK is one of the few nations that go all out on removing sideshoots. It will be interesting to see if there is any real difference, mind you that Sweet Million with its 5 leaders did well last year! Maybe there is a less noticable size reduction with cherry toms, could be a disaster for beefsteaks to allow more than one leader. I might play with that idea next year. This time I just want to see if the overall growth/health is improved as it is claimed.
Hi Steve very interesting video my friend And seeing you with your tooth brush adaption reminds me of the tomato nursery I worked for many years ago , we would have a buzz bar and go up and down the rows buzzing the trusses just like you did there.
Great video. I would only challenge one item...the last one. Tomatoes sold in the grocery store have been hybridized for shelf life, not taste. I don't think they would taste much better if they were "vine ripened". Get a tasty variety you can grow that may have a short shelf life but tastes great. One of the most important reasons for growing them yourself...in my opinion.
Thanks for the info! Yes, grow your own is the way to go! I have 45 varieties this year as I am still seeking my top 10 of all time. My tomato taste test videos always throw up a few good ones and quite a few that i would nevr grow again! Sungold for example - nice tomato if you eat it straight away - there are a few better now, like Tim's Taste of Paradise and Santium Sunrise! ua-cam.com/video/vmZze1_8mG4/v-deo.html
adventitious roots i think was the word you were looking for, steve. i understood where you were coming from because if a plant were to fall over the roots are more adventurous appearing all along the stem. the worst time to sideshoot a tomato is when they are in need of water. anyone who believe sun is needed to ripen the fruit can't be regular visitors on a morning to see the colour intensify overnight. an excellent summary in growing tomatos, steve...................brian
I have always used the green garden velcro you can usually buy from cheapy shops, it works brilliantly and is reusable. I have the soft side on the inside around the plants and canes etc.. Super easy to put on, adjust, cut down or add more too if a bit short, easy to take off and very strong and durable.
Brilliant! I used the same on my runner beans (and a few toms) this weekend. My problem is that at the end of the season I throw all of the snippets into a drawer - the following year they come out as one big alien mass LOL
@@DigwellGreenfingers Hahaha! yes that can happen, I was partially good last year, I was rolling them back up into a round, but then got lazy, so half is neat and half a jumble, but hey, still works out in the end :D
Really great show Steve. As you know, heat is our main problem here in northern Arizona, but nighttime lows can be an issue too. Due to our travel schedule, we have to plant at relatively odd times of the season. We’ve found specific F1s that have better results than others for us.?BTW, isn’t scientific fact disallowed 🤔🤣😉. Take care buddy!
That makes sense! Always grow what works for you. I've seen so many plot holders fail with crops that are no good for our region. Have a super week guys
@@DigwellGreenfingers Truth in those words Steve. Since we had wildly varying insect/fungal/bacterial pressure every year, it's a delicate dance to find new varieties that work here. Unexpected heat here has created some new issues for us. 😬
WoW! Steve this is the most brilliant video tutorial ever. I don't know how I will remember everything - there is so much useful info- but glad I can reefer back to it when i need to. Just potted my tomatoes on earlier before watching this. Is the treatment for blight organic? I've never had blight, touch wood, but I have been told there is so much blight on the allotment that I have grown blight resistant varieties for the first time this year. I will still grow my usual varieties at home and in the greenhouse though. Thank you gain. Happy gatdening 🙂
So glad to be of help! The Bayer treatment is not organic, and while the JBA Blight Guard is not organic, per se, it does say this in the specifications, "This a 100% natural product with no chemicals and is safe to use in your garden." IMHO no product that comes in a plastic bottle can be organic, so there are many false claims on labels!
Hiya thanks for sharing i thought i knew it all about toms thanks for the tips you forgot to mention tom's are carnivorous plants so planting to deep can endanger the plants natural defence structure , i only re pot up to the top of the the purple end of the stem . take care
Well presented assortment of great advice. Impressed with the root show in the bottle, very effective.I use strips of my wifes tights, a bit fiddly but stretches as long as not tied too tight. Oh and Marigolds distract the slugs and makes themselves a sarifice 🙂
One of the best gardening videos I've seen in a long time - packed with really useful information for growing tomatoes. Thanks Steve 👍
So nice of you, Mike. Cheers!
Have a great week mate.

That was very interesting Steve - no longer will I leave them to ripen on the windowsill! But that time to pick was so useful! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful, Kerry! Have a great week

When I snap off tomato side shoots, I snap upwards first, then downward...less of a 'tail' left behind. 🌱💚🍅
