Discovering America by Bicycle | PART 28: ON TO THE ERIE CANAL

- From Niagara Falls, we head east through the less scenic part of the city, until we reach the Erie Canal Trail, which we will follow for the next several hundred miles. Here we find it paved, and it leads us into Lockport, a must-see city which was where a series of locks for the canal were carved out of the Niagara Escarpment, a vital link for the canal and the reason for the town’s existence. And then we continue east along the canal, marveling at the countless lift bridges, perfect little canal towns, and abundant wildlife, with the most spectacular fall weather imaginable, until we reach the town of Albion.
In my opinion Roland/Julianna and Flyscout Rider have the best Vlogs for bike touring. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Bobby, we'll do what we can to keep it up. We're working on a trip around France now. And when I say working on, I mean riding. So far, lots of great stuff to share. Hopefully ready once the US series is done.
Awesome video as usual!
Thanks Dennis!
Lots to enjoy in this one. Fascinating information about the locks and the Erie Canal. I love the ease with which you enjoy each new community. Still look forward to each new chapter!
Thanks Tracy, you're why we do this!
I really look forward to these, thanks.
Thanks Don. We so appreciate that you are following.
What a ride. Just so much history around if people want to look for it. Thanks for another great video. Take care, Al
I love the old history in the east. Where we're from in Colorado, the history gets pretty murky once you reach 150 years back.
I was on UA-cam and your new video popped up and I was excited as I've finished the previous ones. Lovely travels on the Eric Canal.
Thanks riverbliss. Love that you're enjoying them!
And as a BTW, having followed you from the Pacific Ocean, I find it remarkable and inspiring that after multi thousands of miles (3,000 ?), something like 1000 of that is on bike paths (Katy/Rock Island, Ohio-Erie and now Erie Canal). Good route finding.
Thanks! It was really a matter of finding some of the rail trails I've always wanted to ride, and connecting the dots. America has a lot of great long-distance trails.
I have been riding the canal in pieces for the last couple of years (I live in SE Connecticut), and I have family in Batavia, NY. My last section is this part and I am now looking SO forward to it next spring. I loved the Maid of the Mist boatride, so much fun. Those falls are amazing!! Can't wait for your next video!!
Thanks Amy! Every portion has its highlights, I loved the history in this section. We were also blessed with outstanding skies and weather.
Magnificent series guys. Ride safe and take care. JP
Thanks Jay, that means a lot. We're actually in France now, riding the Loire. And, yes, riding safely! Didn't you recently complete a ride on the US west coast?
@@TheBicycleTourists Wow! What an amazing place to ride. I toured there in the early 90s and loved it. I'm sure you'll have a great time. Make sure you visit some of the wineries as they're some of the best in the world. I'm back now from riding the PCH. I rode from San Diego to San Francisco. Take care.
For those watching, the Erie Canal Trail is a mostly complete off road trail from Buffalo to Albany, about 525 miles, has about 85 miles on road. Its part of NY's Empire State Trail, runs on road to Canada, part on road, part trail to NYC. The trail is rail trail from Kingston south to NYC a distance of 100 miles or so, leads you right into the Bronx.
Thanks Steve, for the info. For clarity, it is the Empire State Trail that goes from Canada to NYC, as well as incorporates the Erie Canal Trail. The Erie Canal runs from Buffalo to Albany, across the entire state, and makes up a major part of the Empire State Trail. Would love to ride the trail into NYC some day, what an adventure!
You’ve got about a month to go 😳 how long did the trip take? Loving the adventure 👍👍😊😊
Thanks Paul! The ride took about 3 and a half months. We slowed down a lot once we hit KC, knowing that we wanted to hit New England in the autumn.
Thanks for the videos. They're a source of great information for those with similar aspirations. You may want to correct a typo in the text above. Albion is east of Lockport.
Thank you for watching, Bob. Just trying to pay forward some of the great inspiration we got from similar series. Appreciate the correction, I think it should be fixed. I'm sure it's not the only one!
@@TheBicycleTourists You definitely have got the film making down. Combining your travels with the additional task of putting together and editing the segments while on the road is no small thing. I don't think I could do that. Thanks for the efforts. Me and my girlfriend, Denise, await your segments with much interest and anticipation.
Did you see the tunnel under the canal just east of Medina?
IJ believe we rolled over that, and didn't see under.
@@TheBicycleTourists it's a unique feature, easy to miss. I grew up not far from there and didn't know about it until last year when my wife and I returned to NY to ride the towpath.
I had to look it up with the Google Man.
Yet another "very good"!
Thanks Tom!
It’s a lift bridge.
What would we know? We're from Denver. The biggest river here you can literally walk across.
