Thank you very much Bo. Just what I wanted. This seems like a lot of fun. Now I have some "hobby-ing" to look forward to. Cheers! :)

You forgot the ROKS 2 option for the flammer team as it prevents snipers from one shooting the team, yes it is 5 points but a small insurance policy from it happening. The only down side no other infantry units that have flamethrowers (engineers) can take it only the single flamethrower team.

Perry miniatures American civi war cav with your warlord soviets chopped in half and glued on top. If you can get your hands on some Japanese sword arms and a British airbourne bugle arm it helps the kitbash. So much better than using warlords metals.

Does the Soviet Winter Starter Army from Warlord Games come with a good selection of competitive picks or is it best to buy units individually?

Starter armies are good value for money, esp. The infantry sprues. The vehicles that WG includes in the box are 50/50 on utillity. The tank in that set is not massively usefull.

IT is a concept I have been working on the last year, inspired by the spanish Meta. The idea is to make your Lt into a miniature infantry unit with free smg's. He hides early game like allways and once the midfield is clear pushes up to objectives. I never run small team Lt's anymore unless he is a solo Lt-tax

I've been doing this for years, and have been advising people on the bolt action sub Reddit to use the assault team Lt and getting shit for it for years.
You've got to ask yourself how much does your Lt really contribute? In most games he spends most of the battle hiding behind something giving a leadership buff, if he's out in the open he's dead anyway small team or not. But if you add a couple of extra guys you get three free SMG's or assault rifles for Germans and you can make yourself a handy little assault team for later on in the battle when everyone's beaten up.
For a skirmish army I drop the SMG's and just take rifles so the Lt can contribute to the firefight especially if I'm playing British with the rapidfire special rule.
The other thing to mention is I think it actually makes your Lt a little more survivable in some circumstances, you've obviously got an extra wound, if you just lose one guy you don't have to take a leadership check for running away, and if someone snipes your Lt the other guys still get to hang around and contribute.
