This actually did get a two-season animated tv series on adult swim with the cast returning to reprise their roles. Episode titles contained such gems as:
"Just Beat It" or "Jackson Five Across Yo' Eyes"
"A Crisis at Christmas" or "The Dark Side of the Dark Side of the Moon!"
"Honky Kong!" or "White Apes Can't Hump"
"The Race War!" or "Big Black Cannon Balls Run!"
"Roots (The White Album)" or "The Blacker the Community, the Deeper the Roots!" or "Those Cotton Pickin' Crackers",
"Black Jaws!" or "Finger Lickin' Chicken of the Sea"
"Mister Rogers' Revenge" or "Please Don't You Be His Neighbor"
"That Seed of Kurtis" AKA "Father Is Just Another Word For Motherf***er!"

Love this movie. I heard the director talk about making it and while there are obviously intentional goofs in it, some of the stuff was actual bloopers left in on purpose. When the guy doesn't put the car in park correctly for instance, that was just the guy messing up on the day and they just left it in because it was funny and the older films it was based on had stuff like that in it.

This movie is so accurate in its parody of Blaxploitation movies. The more of them you see, the funnier BD becomes. For example in the movie WIllie Dynamite, there is literally a meeting of pimps where they discuss "the game." It's hilarious in its own right because it's played completely serious but it's absurd. If I have one complaint about BD I think it kind of falls apart at the end when he's fighting in the White House; it feels like a TV sketch and most of these blaxploitation movies start and end at street level-- more grounded in reality.

  • @The_Texorcist
    @The_Texorcist 2 роки тому +2

Black Dynamite is one of my favorite comedies. Many people say it’s a parody or that it lampoons the Blaxploitation genre. To me it’s more than just simple parody. With movies like Airplane or Naked Gun they took a genre and went over the top to show the lunacy of their perspective genre. With Black Dynamite there was a sense of verisimilitude. They didn’t take a genre film and add a ton of humor or lunacy onto it, they took a genre and in earnest highlighted many funny flaws within many movies in that genre.
It was common to see the boom arm in many of those movies, they did hire theater trained actors to play parts in those movies (why Black Dynamites brother sounded like he was from a Shakespeare play), actors readings screen direction etc etc etc. They took what was already there and just packed all those existing genre stereotypes into the movie. There was a level of care and reverence for the material that I think sets it apart from other parodies or spoofs.
For this reason I think it stands up with Superfly, Foxy Brown, Dolemite, Coffy, Shaft, Cleopatra Jones etc.

@@88trapordie Nah, it's all good fun bud. It's just a goofy comedy, take Predator, NOBODY is going into combat with a 5.56 beltfed General Electric Minigun + the pack of ammo. It's funny, I have a Ruger PC Charger 9mm Sub-Semi Carbine, a 33 round Glock stick mag on Semi-Auto goes much faster than you'd think, so I can't imagine a full auto Submachine Gun stick mags would last at all.

This is a perfect parody. Especially because they shot it on 16mm color reversal stock. Nowadays, you expect a parody or homage film to be shot digitally and maybe post processed for a filmic look. But the coarse grain, harsh contrast, and garish colors of the 1970s' preferred low budget film stock really bake in so much of the period authenticity.
There's also the meta level to the humor. Maybe my favorite gag in the whole movie is when the one militant dude is saying all his stage direction out loud, and at first, MJW - in character not as Black Dynamite, but as the running back turned actor *playing* Black Dynamite - looks confused at first, but tries to keep it going...but as the dude keeps saying the stage directions, he looks off camera, like he's waiting for the director to yell cut. The look on his face is just pure 'Are you seein this shit? Are we seriously not doing another take?' It kills me every time. 😂

Fun fact: When the three hitman come out of that white car to shoot Black Dynamite, and the driver forgets to put the car in Park and it jumps, that was a genuine good by the actor/stuntman driving the car. In discussing whether they were keeping the take in or just shooting it again, both Michael Jai White and director Scott Sanders finally came to the conclusion of "well, in those awful cash-grab blaxploitation flicks, they had no budget so they'd keep the take in". And that's what they wound up doing.

Many others have already commented on some of the specific scenes and gaffes inspired by classic blaxploitation films front the 70s. If you haven’t already done a thorough exploration of the genre, it would be well worth your time. Sure the exploitative nature of turning up racial stereotypes to 11 is messed up, but many of those films are truly entertaining and a unique snapshot of that period of time. I’m a huge fan of the Jim Kelly films, especially his scenes as William in Enter the Dragon, and of his classic starring role in Black Belt Jones (there were several nods to BBJ in Black Dynamite). Great reaction and not surprised you liked it. They really nailed the feel of those films, technical flaws and all.

This film is one of my favorites! It's a parady that doesn't disrespect the films that it was inspired by. Michael Jai White is a beast!

1970's Blaxploitation movies are an important part of film history and you got to see a lot more skin than white movies and when you are a 10 year old white kid that is the icing on the cake.

Funny enough, this was developed to be a serious movie and part way thru development they realized it was more of a comedy and changed it. Worth looking into.

This is one of the funniest movies ever made. Michael Jai White should have been such a bigger star. One of my favorites.

Jai White is a beast, should of been way bigger than he is. Also this movie is amazing.

at 3:36, he saying it like that to parody and, more accurately, pay homage to the black actors of the 1970s who went to schools like juliard and were clasically trained actors and who were also stars on the stage only to find that in hollywood they could only get parts in blaxploitation films

Hey James - crazy idea but why not make your own Black Dynamite series for UA-cam? I bet a ton of people would love to help and it would allow you to put your filmmaking skills doing something you would really enjoy.

I thought the did make a show of that show right? I’ve never watched it, but I think they made a cartoon version. But that might the acid flashbacks talking.
