the way the commentator talks about killer moves and monster knights together with a fitting accent is making these videos so great to watch :D, ty for sharing this seriously :)
Borris spassky was afraid of Tal's counter attack or hidden trick! That is why he did not took the pawn. Even, once in a game, Bobby Fischer did the same. He avoided the best move . Tal asked fischer "Why you did not play a certain move in the game?" Fischer replied," Because, you laughed when I wrote it down" This how much super masters feared tal's attack.
I am truly big fan of him..when I watched his first game I was forced to watch the whole series of his games on this channel ...but in every game the moves were just amazing and I couldn't even imagine that this could happen ...haahahhaahah nothing to say he was really a "Tactical Genius".
+Vishweshwer Mangalapalli Thank you. Can you please make that comment here: ua-cam.com/users/MatoJelicdiscussion chessschoolsa.wordpress.com/about-mato-jelic/
Dear Mato, I have been watching quite a lot of your videos off late and learning chess. Just taking a moment to truly THANK YOU and if you are ever in India, I would like to be of great help in every way I can. With greatest gratitude. Victor.
After 22. Ng4 by Tal, another line is: 23. Rd1 by Spassky (Qe7 cannot move to avoid check mate at Re1xRe8), so Tal moves Rh5 to Rh1 (check). After Kg1xRh1 by Spassky, then Tal makes 3 consecutive checks at H file, ending with mate. Thank you Master Mato. It is a 2-cent from your youtube channel student!
As so often, I find the sac almost plays itself; it is the obvious follow-up from the position. But how did Tal reach such a position? How did he get an opponent of the caliber of a Boris Spassky to let him achieve the Queen's Indian player's dream set-up? Ah. That's the sorcery that made him "the Magician of Riga." :-)
Thanks to your videos I am improving my chess. I still got a long way to go, but I keep learning from your comments and explanations. Thanks again, Mato. Tal was so aggressive! And accurate.
I couldn’t get over the persuasion that Spassky’s best move WAS to capture the Pawn, but figured it would immediately be demonstrated to be the wrong move because of some sacrifice by Tal that I just couldn’t detect! Tal made Spassky refuse a material advantage by reputation alone!
hi Mato , thank you very much for all your videos , they are great . by the way i think that if Spassky had captured the pawn then Tal would have sac'ed the bishop on h2 just like he did later .that knight protects the h2 square and it's too risky to move. i wish you good luck with your chess and bye for now :)
I think it's worth mentioning the following option for Spasky (which would not work as well) If instead of resigning Spassky played, Rook E1, then Queen H4 no longer works in light of Rook takes Rook on E8 checkmate white! Instead, I assume Tal would have continued with Rook to H1 check. After king takes on H1, Queen to H4 check. King must move to G1 there is no other option. Then Queen H2 check and after king to F1 Queen takes on G2 checkmate Keep up the god work Mato
After the black knight went to G4, at 5:42, white should respond: Pawn to F3. Now queen can't come to H4 because pawn takes the knight on G4, and at the same time creates flight-square for King at F2. I know that the queen is covering F2 (if she is on H4), but if she tries to go to H1, then the F2 square would be available.
Tal offered the pawn to drive the defender away (the night on f3) but he traded it off anyway a move later and reached the position he desired for the winning sac.
Thanks MATO. You did not tell me, can today's programs play the way TAL played? Isn't it true that TAL would have been the only player who could beat today's programs?
It is important to note that if Spassky had played Re1 instead of resigning, Tal had the rook sacrifice Rh1. Spassky perhaps could have waited for this move before resigning.
Love Mato's videos. Maybe worth at the end pointing out that black's main threat is Rh1 check. This is how he would meet Re1 when Qh4 immediately is no good.
At 2:29 white could play similar killer move that tal played. Bxh7+, knight cannot take it because of Qxg7#. Of course, there are defenses, but white could have a bit advantage in position.
I think Tal had calculated that Spassky wouldn't take the pawn, and made Spassky move just where he wanted. That's why Tal's sacrifices are so strange sometimes!
This is the correct way to view Mato's videos. 1) See Mato has a new video up, 2) start video playing and click "like" before he says Hi, 3) watch video at least twice.
Mato, I anticipated MT's "killer move." My immediate thought was Spassky should have left the bishop alone, and make an alternative move. Would that have let Spassky able to avoid a resignation? At least, for a time.
As soon as the Knight left the f3-square, that attack was coming. That's why Spassky didn't accept the pawn sacrifice. It came, anyway, a couple moves later.
I loved and it seemed like ever time I would ask a question boom you answered like you heard me in was a dope experience you good I loved how you made it yours
the same king vulnerability can be seen in the french defense too where the kingside knight is forced to retreat due to the advanced white e pawn to e5. bishop can take h7 if black is not vigilant
Hello Mato. In 2:50 after 16. cxd4 you say that best move is to capture with knight. Wouldn't that be followed by Bxh2+ for black resulting in checkmate just like later in the game?
I thought about it as well and maybe this continuation is winning for black: 1.Re1 Rh2 2.R:e7 R:g2 (now if Kh1, Rh2 and after Kg1 Rh1 mate), so 3. Kf1 Nh2+ and now if 4.Ke2 Bf3 5. Ke1 Rg1x or 4.Ke1 Rg1+ 5.Ke2 Bf3x. Am I missing something?
in this match it was clear that spassky lacked confidence against mikhail tal It is strongly suspected that 1996 1997 and 1998 were the peak years for Tal's appearance
Another variant - 22...Bxg2, then if 23.Kxg2 Qb7+ 24.Kf1 (Kg3 is a messy "King Walk" that prolongs the agony) ...QH1++, as the rook defends the E file. If instead the king stays put, say 23.Re1, then ...Rh1+, and taking the bishop is forced. Then 24...Qb7+ 25.Kg3 Kh5+, and another King Walk. If, instead, 23.f3, then the pawn falls to the bishop with an attack on the rook and the king completely exposed.
When that Tal sacs a piece, time to throw the "Tal" in, Ain't no master at his level, I said that Tal is Tal-ented. His swiftness grips your army, rips it with his Tal-on, To you it's just a chess piece, to Tal it's a Tal-isman.
I think that the same, but after White rook to E1, Black rook to H1 (check), then white King take Black rook on H1, then Black queen can move to H4(check), follow by H2(Check), and lastly Queen to G2 or H1(Checkmate). Black queen combine check with knight and Bishop.
It seems that Spassky was psychologically overwhelmed by Tal , this is one of his known weaknesses , Fischer new how to exploit it to win the world championship against him ;Spassky after that loss never recovered again ,he fell in a melancholy for long years .
4:09 if knight takes the pawn black has bxh2 available queen takes is also unpleasant because it's on the same file with the black rook obviously it makes perfect sense
This is the variation I see after f3: Rh1!! then Kxh1 then Qe4 then Kg1 then Qh2 then after the white king moves again it is a back rank mate with the queen.
Mato, i found another final move. please correct me if i'm wrong but in the last move if Tal plays queen to C3 instead of moving the knight Boris would have been resigning as well.. no way to stop that as well.. correct?
Hey Mato, @ 3:29 you asked why Spassky did not capture the hanging pawn on D4. I think Spassky was protecting the E5 square from the black queen. If he capture the pawn on D4. Talk would have moved the black queen to E5 (with dark square bishop already on D6). It is checkmate in 2.
+nsakic Not really, if you meant the check-mate to occur at H2, the knight on F3 is protecting that square, even if the knight does capture the pawn on D4, after black queen moves to E5 the knight can go back to F3 and/or move the g2 pawn to g3 safeguarding any sort of mate
I go thru Tal's games not for instructions but for relaxation and joy. What a player!

Hello Mato.

I thought about it as well and maybe this continuation is winning for black:

I love how everyone here plays at the top level and claims to have found a move that stops mate, when Boris Spassky himself resigned.
How about White Rook to E1
+david hosni - then Ne5 and black can force mate after the exchange
+david hosni
Then rook to h1 and after queen to h4
I was thinking abut the same. Here is the answer-
Rh1+ followed by Qh4+ and then Qh2 and Qh1
How to be sure that it's a Mikhail tal game
hello :) what is wrong with QC7 instead KG4 ? thanks a lot Mato for your videos !!!!
ok sorry ...if QC7 so white can play F4....!!
after watching many tal games, i knew the move would be a variation of the "greek gift," his favorite move.
“If queen to f4. How do you stop checkmate now? There is no way to stop checkmate.” Lmao love you mato
Very instructive strategy
Queens Indian made easy...
I never understood which was better King or Queen but I will study Queens Indian more in depth because of this one game
Today's programs are stronger then Tal
On move 22, after Ng4 can't white play Re1? That would stop the queen from going to h file. I must be missing something here.
There's also Re1 as a defense in the end, but a forced mate of Rh1+ KxRh1, Qh4+ Kg1, Qh2+ Kf1, Qh1#.
in this match it was clear that spassky lacked confidence against mikhail tal
It is strongly suspected that 1996 1997 and 1998 were the peak years for Tal's appearance
He can, but to what purpose?
A reverse Greek gift with an extra rook ready to play? Yeah that's game over.
First, how to sac my queen, then rook, then bishop, then knight, then pawns. - Mikhail Tal (on what he thinks about after his opponent moves)
What if Spassky (white) play Qxd4 on move 17 instead of Qa5?
at 5:53 why not why not Re1 by spassky? attacking the queen and also if it leaves the rook behind it..... mate
because it is mate in 3
rook h1 check and you can guesss the next 2
Actually it is mate in 4 moves Rh1-Kxh1-Qh4x-Kg1-Qh2x-Kf2-Qh1xx if Qh1 where I stated Qh2 then Kxh1
Thanks Per Stahlberg I didn't see that
Another variant - 22...Bxg2, then if 23.Kxg2 Qb7+ 24.Kf1 (Kg3 is a messy "King Walk" that prolongs the agony) ...QH1++, as the rook defends the E file. brutal back rank checkmate threats, thank you mato
Откуда взяли этого Спасского, не пойму!
I think Tal is the most spectacular player ever!
Would rook to E-1 work for black (so the queen couldn't move to H-4)?
I think that the same, but after White rook to E1, Black rook to H1 (check), then white King take Black rook on H1, then Black queen can move to H4(check), follow by H2(Check), and lastly Queen to G2 or H1(Checkmate). Black queen combine check with knight and Bishop.
@@katink1425 Aha, thanks!
There was no checkmate
in my opinion,,5:46 If white play Re1,there is the continuation..
1.Re1 Rh1+ 2.Kxh1 Qh4+ 3.Kg1 Qh2+ 4.Kf1 Qh1#..or i miss something ?
Dear Mato,
I really enjoy watching your videos. But I have a question: what if rook from d1 comes to e1 pinning the queen ?
then rook gives gives check at h1 and after king captures it queen comes to that file gives check and further on check mates at h1.
It seems that Spassky was psychologically overwhelmed by Tal ,
this is one of his known weaknesses , Fischer new how to exploit
it to win the world championship against him ;Spassky after that loss
never recovered again ,he fell in a melancholy for long years .
What if white goes Rook to e1 at 6:15? Now black can not maneuver with it's Queen because of the threat of checkmate by taking Re8 if Queen moves.
I think this is the possible variation if White plays Re1: Rh1+ Kxh1, Qh4+ Kg1, Qh2+ Kf1, Qxg2++.
right
thank you sir
greetings mato, from montreal!
4:09 if knight takes the pawn black has bxh2 available
queen takes is also unpleasant because it's on the same file with the black rook obviously
it makes perfect sense
Lesson: Castled King should be planned to defend before castling Mato. Am I right?
at 5:50 ,
wat about rook d1 ?
instead of resigning, why not Re1 threatening check-mate with Re8 if queen moves?
Great game!
This is the variation I see after f3: Rh1!! then Kxh1 then Qe4 then Kg1 then Qh2 then after the white king moves again it is a back rank mate with the queen.
Mato, i found another final move. please correct me if i'm wrong but in the last move if Tal plays queen to C3 instead of moving the knight Boris would have been resigning as well.. no way to stop that as well.. correct?
mato in the end is it possible to play queen to c3 if pawn is pushed to stop mate then mate with rook at h1 what do you think ?
Hey Mato, @ 3:29 you asked why Spassky did not capture the hanging pawn on D4. I think Spassky was protecting the E5 square from the black queen. If he capture the pawn on D4. Talk would have moved the black queen to E5 (with dark square bishop already on D6). It is checkmate in 2.
