Jack (Griffin Dunn) visits David (David Naughton) from beyond the grave to warn him of his impending curse.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
While wandering the English moors on vacation, college yanks David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) happen upon a quaint pub with a mysterious patronage who warn them not to leave the road when walking after dark. Irreverent of such advice as characters in horror films always are, the two decide to find a short cut....David wakes up in the hospital with a nasty bite wound to his shoulder; the freshly deceased, and rapidly decomposing, Jack arrives soon after to deliver the grim news that, unless he commits suicide, David will become a werewolf when the moon is full. David dismisses the encounter as a hallucination, but all indicators point to lycanthrope; evenings of barking and bloodletting follow closely behind. While the story is thin and much of the tongue-in-cheek humor is overdone, there are plenty of genuine jolts thanks to makeup guru Rick Baker's eye-popping special effects. The werewolf, resembling a cross between a bear and a wolverine, appears frighteningly real, and, given the fantastic premise, the gore is most convincing (although surprisingly and refreshingly scant). The hospital dream sequences are creative, and the scenes in which the werewolf runs rampant through downtown London are particularly good. In all, An American Werewolf in London is an original, atmospheric film that manages both to scare and amuse. While dismissed by most American critics upon its release, the film managed to secure a place in the annals of American cinema when Baker won an Academy Award for his amazing effects and creature designs.

Jack as a corpse gossiping to his best friend about his crush sleeping with his school rival is just so funny to me.
Wait so is that actually his corpse or just his spirit??? I’m just now coming back to this movie after a long time and this is confusing me. I assume it’s his actual corpse now because of what everyone is saying and also because jack looks even more decayed in the next scene
@@Joey7Z7Horror He's technically a ghost who's soul is trapped on earth in limbo, but he's forced to appear how he was at the moment of death and then is made to decompose as if he were a physical corpse. It's all very supernatural as he ends up rotting down to the bone a lot faster than a corpse would in reality.
@@J_C_CH I mean, that’s kind of the first thought I had since that’s actually my depiction of how a ghost should appear like but everyone talking about actual corpses was throwing me off
I like that tbh, it really shows that despite being an undead spirit and a werewolf, Jack and David can still carry out normal best friend conversations

The actor who played Jack(Griffin Dunne) actually got depressed while they were putting the make-up on him because he started to imagine if that is what he would look like if he really was torn apart. He was also concerned about how his mother would react if she saw him like that in the movie. The practical effects were that good.
When she finally saw it she was greatly disturbed I met him at a convention and be told me back in 2017

What’s really depressing is that Griffin’s real life younger sister (actress Dominique Dunne) was murdered by her boyfriend about a year after she filmed Poltergeist. He talked about it a little in various interviews.
The scariest part of the movie is the fact that his friend is so candid in telling him to commit suicide, I would be so terrified in daves position
I began to debate mentally about that situation that difficult to have to commit suicide
At least in the ending of the movie, the curse was finally broken, but he's dead.

the sad thing about this film is that's the two guys are very likable and makes the outcome for both even more tragic
Simon wadsley Like Landis says about the first scene, they start the film in a meat wagon, which gives you a big clue as to where they'll end up. But that's part of it's beauty; no franchise, no sequel. A stand alone masterpiece in filmmaking

I like how Griffin Dunne portrayed this despite being undead he's pretty much stays in the same cheerful mood as he was at the start of the movie.
Yeah and apparently Griffin hated the whole make up on his face and neck, thinking that it would ruin his career and nobody would know who he was.
I don't get why was he still in the same cheerful mood from when he was still alive

Forty years later and the effects still stand up, even in HD. Now _that's_ artistry!
Why do you expect things to get better over time? You realize these people who did these special effects were extremely talented artists right? Not everyone can do that. You hear many people like Mozart or see paintings like Van Gough lately? Exactly.
Practical effects tend to be more realistic looking

I just love the werewolf lore this movie creates. The fact a werewolf in human form is haunted and tormented by the ones they kill. You could create a whole series based on this.

Fun fact: Originally the piece of toast Jack eats was going to fall through his open throat and he would brush it off like a fly, but this was deemed FAR too horrible.

Thats brilliant acting. Griffin Dunne executed this scene wonderfully.
I just love how Jack explains the situation to David, you really get a sense that he's delivering a message, that he's memorized what someone from beyond has said to him. He uses the lycanthrope term too, he's very thorough about it. The ''Beware the moon, David!'' is very eerie, he takes that very seriously now.
Every scene is equally horrifying and hilarious. Love this movie.

I wish there were some kind of supplement to this describing things from Jack's point of view. It would entail him witnessing his own funeral, learning from the other undead why he is stuck like this, dealing with his rapid decomposition and his final release.

They did an amazing job with Jacks makeup. I miss practical effects. Now we're stuck with garbage ass CGI.
oh shut up, its make up. Anyone can do this. They use cgi on things that people can't do or can't easily do.
+WeaponizedLizardMen actually no not many people can do this, that's why the old school monster makers and design artists are legendary, now a days they like to use CGI for everything cause it's easier and cheaper in many respects...they go overboard with it all the time.

It's not that it's terrible, it's just that it's really unnecessary sometimes.

This movie scared me spitless and I was 24 years old, a supposed adult and a confirmed horror fan. Now, its one of my favorites!
The throat torn apart is so disturbing and gross but the way it's played off, it just adds to the comedy.
Went to see this in the theater years ago. It was there I witnessed the best reaction to the amazing work done on Jack for this scene. The girl sitting behind us didn't scream. Didn't run from the theater. Didn't throw up. Just sat there, wide-eyed, with her jaw hitting the floor. 😂
I can see why this won the inaugural Oscar for Best Makeup. Rick Baker earned it.

Now this is a classic film! The characters, the music, the effects and all the emotions throughout. 100x better than some of the crappy cheap horror films these days. This has to be in my top 5 favourite films.

I love this film I do wonder though Jack keeps decomposing to if David kept living what would happen as it would get to the point he is a feeble skeleton that cannot longer stay standing - so how could he walk about haunting him ?
I believe Ric Baker, the makeup designer in this movie, oversaw the makeup on the werewolf and zombies in Michael Jackson's Thriller.

FANTASTIC fucking makeup! Seriously even though this isn't one of the things people would generally want to do, I would give ANYTHING to sit down with Rick Baker and just share a beer and hear his story. I mean, the man has won fucking 7 Academy Awards for Makeup Design. I would absolutely LOVE the chance to just hear some of his stories and techniques over the years of making films. Its just one of my secret cinema wet dreams... most people would want to meet a Brad Pitt/Anne Hathaway/George Clooney/Robert Dinero but I would just love to meet some of the lesser know publicly, but most important people in the films we know and love like Rick... Holy shit the questions I would have to ask him! And just a side note, I fucking LOVE whoever is acting as Jack (the mutilated guy) in this scene. His demeanor, attitude, and influence on this film was just spectacular even though he died within the first 30 minutes of the movie. I honestly think this is THE best Horror/Comedy film ever besides Sean Of The Dead. And I have a feeling Edgar Winter took a few cues from t his movie to create his masterpiece of Horror/Comedy. This is clearly the better film though, that being said. I just love to speculate about the influence older films like this had in modern movies!

The way it just wiggles back and forth like it completely realistically would have in a person who suffered those degrees of injury just blows my mind... So I haven't seen every movie or TV show ever made but besides The Howling, what movies have had prosthetic makeup/effects that are so convincing since this? Like I said, I'm not trying to piss anyone off, I just love film and am genuinely curious if anyone knows of a film with better prosthetic makeup design because I will watch it in a second then get back to you on how much better of a movie you picked then me... Lmfao!
