  • "Who am I?" is the title given to a set of questions and answers bearing on Self-enquiry. The questions were put to Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi by one Sri M. Sivaprakasam Pillai about the year 1902. Sri Pillai, a graduate in Philosophy, was at the time employed in the Revenue Department of the South Arcot Collectorate. During his visit to Tiruvannamalai in 1902 on official work, he went to Virupaksha Cave on Arunachala Hill and met the Master there. He sought from him spiritual guidance, and solicited answers to questions relating to Self-enquiry. As Bhagavan was not talking then, not because of any vow he had taken, but because he did not have the inclination to talk, he answered the questions put to him by gestures, and when these were not understood, by writing. As recollected and recorded by Sri Sivaprakasam Pillai, there were fourteen questions with answers to them given by Bhagavan. This record was first published by Sri Pillai in 1923, along with a couple of poems composed by himself relating how Bhagavan's grace operated in his case by dispelling his doubts and by saving him from a crisis in life. 'Who am I?' has been published several times subsequently. We find thirty questions and answers in some editions and twenty-eight in others. There is also another published version in which the questions are not given, and the teachings are rearranged in the form of an essay. The extant English translation is of this essay. The present rendering is of the text in the form of twenty-eight questions and answers.

Vegans / PETA members / Western spiritual seekers would find this image to be unsettling, no doubt, but it has been an age-old Indian yogic tradition to use tiger / deer
skins to practice yoga/kriya/pranayama/meditation. Shiva is often shown
as being draped in a tiger's skin as well as sitting on it. Ramana
Maharshi occasionally sat on a tiger skin because devotees thought that
it would be appropriate for specific occasions. By doing so Maharshi was
in no way endorsing tiger hunting or violence against animals, he was simply following a tradition and agreeing to devotees' requests.
In a book named 'Letters from Sri Ramanasramam', in letter 74, Maharshi
explained that he sat on the skin because some devotees liked him to:
"Someone brings that tiger's skin and requests me to sit on it. I accede
to his request. Some one else comes here and says, 'Please will you get up? I
want that tiger's skin.' So I get up. What do I lose?'"

I'm more bothered that he is an enlightened bum. He didn't work, his productivity was zero. He lived in the temple on the handouts of others. Great message, but Jesus delivered a similar message better he worked as a carpenter, doing real things for real people.

You are a sheep my friend. Jesus incarnated to save people, but Ramana took birth to become enlightened and to clean his karmas. Jesus was an avatar and had no karma to clean and he took on other peoples sins and cleared them. Ramana followed the creators commands, as did christ. When one becomes enlightened then God either chooses them to spread the message or clear their own karmas. Ramana just by sitting changed the world for the better and he knew anything pure created in this world will be distorted by Lucifer and ultimately promotes Lucifers message. Now Christianity is controlled by Lucifer for his own agenda. Ramana wanted people not to follow him and follow only God in their heart and use the heart to know from good vs evil because the Lucifer manipulated our DNA so we follow authority like the sheep we are, eg: hitler, mussolini etc. And Ramana said Silence is not inaction but it is the greatest action, and you will never understand that truth unless you had a glimpse of the infinite. Both Ramana and Jesus Christ are great messengers, because you are ignorant does not mean they are bad.

Yes Jesus did provide teaching and It is called Bhakthi Yoga, like Kabir and Shirdi Sai Baba(Moral Code). Ramana preferred no teachings and the devotees sitting silently near him was his most important teaching but he was instructed by God to provide the scientific method. This method of self inquiry would not have worked during Jesus's time, people were very superstitious those times.
Also only Christianity revealed the hidden manipulator called Lucifer, the fake God, that still manipulates human beings to think he is the father. We are living in his world or computer simulation. So which ever prophets came they came with great risks to themselves and had to obey the rules of this computer simulation. The biggest teaching that is hidden in Christianity is Lucifer the Devil who pretends to be God. No other religion revealed that truth. Ramana knew that Lucifer existed and he called him the Fake Ordainer and Lucifer has no control over anyone who has realized the self. But that was Ramana hidden teachings to the awakened souls. Hinduism called it Maya.
Ramana teachings is truly revolutionary, a direct way to enlightenement, but bhakthi Yoga is fastest enlightenment if you truly and intensely seek the seer.
The best and fastest method would be Ramana teachings and bhakthi Yoga combined. Ramana method: See yourself Seeing, bhakthi method: Surrender yourself totally.
So the method is: "See yourself seeing" while surrendering yourself completely with compassion, faith, persistence, intensity(intense earning for the consciousness or divine and to be free from rebirth) and humility. You have to make a complete circle of this everyday and in every moment the whole day. In 6 months, you would see the all pervading awareness, Brahma.

      Workdove.
First, "working" as you appear to define it here, is not the only measure of "productivity.
Second, "productivity" is not a valid measure of the worth of a human being... or anything else for that matter. It's an arbitrary abstraction.
Third, Jesus only did his ministry for 3 years. There's no record of his working as a carpenter at that time. There is record of them collecting/maintaining reserves for the poor/ministry.
Ramana actually did a lot of work. He worked in the kitchen of the Ashram. He designed, laid out, and built the buildings for the Ashram.
Finally, It's well understood and acknowledged, even by Ramana himself, that he did not want an Ashram built around him. He actually tried to get out of it three times by his own admission. It just happens that the Universe/All saw fit for the Ashram to be built and his ministry be the center of it. He didn't simply do his ministry through talking either. It happened through his spiritual energy. In fact, that was the primary vehicle for his ministry, not talking.
Pleas consider opening your mind/heart for a broader, more complete understanding of things before disparaging people. You deserve respect. All beings do. So does Ramana.

This is what happens when mind thinks of things without heart at its center. We are all brainwashed to use mind in a certain way and it has become a deadly habit that causes all sorts of trouble. At least Ramana was not crucified for spreading spiritual blessings, Old India had a open heart towards accepting Spiritual beings.

There's no one more kind to animals than ramana was. There are countless stories with him with various animals. He had a cow named Lakshmi who he claimed was enlightened. Finally there the story where he stood and allowed all these hornets to sting him because he was sorry he disturbed their home. Like others have said this tiger skin is a tradition thing. Very old fashioned raj era stuff, Thankfully it's no longer practiced nor condoned. Don't forget humans and especially shamans used various animal skins because of the supossed power and energy it would give to the shaman. But this was a sign of respect for the animal

Somewhere I ran across a mantra that had something to do with Ramana... and for some reason I just liked it. It is "Om Vachad Bhuve Namaha" ~ so I am passing it along in "good faith" for whoever may know about it, what it relates to (or not) & where it actually occurs in the "Archives." In the meantime, as far as I'm concerned, it is: "One of the Mysteries." All I remember is, that He said it had "Shakti."

Who am I? for understanding who am I ? in simple way, who is there in the body, before death, who has leaved from the body after death, it is the one and only we all calling it has Atma, when it is in the body we are calling Jeev atma, when it is leaving from body we are calling death, what ever we are doing we are thinking our body is doing all, we are accepting atma is one of the part of our body, but everything is doing by atma through our body, if it is negative karma or positive karma, or thinking, taking, doing, whatever, when we are in body conscious, we are comparing each other with body qualities, Anger, Lust, Ego, Greed & Attachment. when we are in the original form of Atma we are all equal, with original qualities of soul, Purity, Peace, Prosperity, Love, Power, Knowledge, Bliss, so we are all souls, body is the combination of the five elements Earth, sky, Fire, Water, Air. it forms with these five elements when we take birth, and it dissolves when we leave from our body.

What word is he using throughout this audiobook? like in 19:02 "When one self becomes ...... all becomes ......."; is he using the word "quiescent"
    Thanks
Edit: Yes he is using the word "quiescent"

    • @almagore1
      @almagore1 9 років тому +8

boksaboki Maharshi teaches that "when the mind becomes "Quiescent", only the Self will be seen (or appear). Quiescent means more that the lack of thoughts in the form of words, but complete mental silence of all kinds. The mind is the consciousness of the Brain and is not our "Central Consciousness". It is like the Sun and the moon. The Sun represents our self and the mind is the moon. At night when the Sun is not visible, the moon gives off light but it is only the reflected light from the Sun. When the Sun rises, the moon disappears. It is the similar with the Self and the mind. As long as the mind (moon) is active and visible, the Central Consciousness can not be seen. When the Mind becomes "quiescent.", then only the Self is seen. Obviously there is more to this but if you get the "Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi" he explains everything clearly.

Who am I? is difficult to find and to experience, for many of us, we have spent the last five years in research and creation of the methodology to help reach to this point of the SELF and that could be accesible for all, Why? we were motivator and scientific researchers that we had to deliver something better to help in this world.
In a very positive way, one stage of the development took us to a SET that we named ENQUIRY and has now started to help in conflicts such as the one in Colombia that after 52 years of war and many kinds of conflicts is now starting a process to understand, accept and feel peace and the others around us.
Making people feel and experience PEACE, and not listening or reading about it is for us a KEY to reach the SELF.

I don't find any guru worth his salt who uses dead animals (that are probably killed for the purpose) as mats to sit on. A real guru is supposed to have non dual compassion for all beings. I don't know what's the story behind this image but I can't believe he was not aware

Ramana Maharishi was a great Saint, but he failed to recognize the importance of his body in communicating his teachings.
He could have live much longer had he prioritized physical health.

Workdove I dont think that he "parasited" off of other people, the other people just wanted to serve him and if he was forced to, he would do his own work but would not care he would only do the bare minimum to survive and devote all of his other time towards spiritual practice and therefore he accepted his followers love and care for him to devote more time to spiritual practice. His body was worthless to him as he believed he was the soul and the soul is eternal. He was interwoven with non attachment as he had separated his soul from the world.

An excellent eye opener video full of true knowledge! I am Highly Grateful! 1 Question:
Does constantly holding on to the thought, "Who am I?" mean constantly, repeatedly creating the thought "Who am I?" or would it suffice if other thoughts as and when these arise, are nipped in the bud? To me, second alternative appears to suffice, as ultimately mind has to fall silent by merging in the Eternal Self. I shall be grateful for confirmation or guidance on this point.

It seems to me that "Who am I" is actually a pointer and not a set of words for chanting. It points towards the witnessing awareness and, when in action, is bound to stop the chattering of mind. Words and language are not important.

i listened to this discourse and have been practising this for some time.if anyone of you is a devout follower of bhagvan would it be advisable to immediately render the mind empty or let them linger for sometime and examine them?though in the discourse we have been advised to do it immediately

Ramana said in the discourse that there is no point examining tattvas because they are qualities of the senses - trash, no need to examine the trash, just get rid of it and focus in source/Self.
Or did I misunderstand his interpretation?
Everything wants to live and examining it focuses upon it and makes it live - then the inner Self/Source is not focused on and steps back while the sensory stuff moves forward.

Who Am I? Is the most important question in the world! It has been said by some people that Maharshi taught that all one had to do was to "be", but listening here to His true teachings how could one simply "be" when to ask truly and sincerely, who am I? is such difficult work to do. Or is Who am I the simplest work there is I..

it is the subtlest act of attending back to one's being from any any thinking.
the first layer of desire is natural desire for self's effortless happiness.
rest of the karmic layers falling on it so so rapidly that the jiva misses it in his perception and he is bound to think that his desire is for some object.
so now our duty is to bring our attention back to first layer 'i' and finally that too will have to die (or sucked by Real undivided Self) bcoz it cant survive without the layers of impressions. am i right sir?

It's very nice to watch this video. But the one thing is missing. There are no running scrolls. Rather than depending upon the captions which are unedited and therefore not worthy; please make a concerted effort or an attempt so that the entire text appears on the screen simultaneously with the oral presentation. Of course you may keep whatever photo of Bhagwan in the background. In this way the watcher could watch the video with complete ease and attention.
