      I had a 1989 Crown Vic with that 302 and I did almost all highway driving at the time; and yeah I could easily get in the mid/high 20s for mpg if I drove reasonably. And believe me, when the fuel gauge broke I got VERY in to tracking my fuel economy!

  • @MtnBadger
    @MtnBadger 2 роки тому +19

    As a (retired) ASE tech, I wasn't thrilled about my wife getting the 4cyl. w/turbo because I know the cons but... It was what she wanted and there are some pros, primarily the gad milage. We have a 2018 GMC Terrain, bought new and she gets about 32mpg, which ain't too shabby for an SUV. The thing I do make sure happens is that every time she has the oil changed, A) they use the right oil and most importantly, B) which is to disable the fuel system and prime the turbo before restarting the engine. Dry starting turbos (yes, some purport to "stay wet" and be less susceptible to damage) because starting *any* turbo after draining the oil can lead to premature wear and early replacement. The early Ford turbo (i.e. the mustang in the early 80s) chewed up turbos and spit them out after 20k miles or less.
    It's not as bad now but still a huge difference if you don't dry start your turbocharged car. Trust me, you'll thank me later.

      Nope, just driving back and forth to work. I just checked and i stand corrected, max was 32mpg, no hybrid. The savings in gas will help pay for the early rebuild later (and she gets the GMC extended warranty). I told her about it and she'd rather save the money on gas now.

      The Ford evap valves for most 20xx Ford SUVs is known to fail. It's an electrical connector and I think 2 bolts, extremely easy to reach under the hood and takes 3 minutes to swap. $20 part, too. No reason not to replace them if there's an evap code!

    Scotty, it's the purge valve stuck open. Unable to bleed up fuel tank and rich condition? Pull the valve and blow through it I bet it's stuck open. Tap it on the bench and try again. Bet it closed. $30 bucks for the new valve. Cheers!

    • @danuffie6340
      @danuffie6340 2 роки тому +3

      Brian, you are 100% correct. The normally closed purge valve on the engine is stuck open. And only gets tested above 41deg f. And there is no evap system pump on this Scotty. Only on hybrid Fords will you find an evap pump. To test the purge valve read your ftp volts at key on engine off with scanner. A good value is 2.61v. With engine idling the ftp should not drop in voltage. If it does the purge is flowing assuming the valve is not being commanded on. Unplug the 2 wire connector on the valve to verify. Replace the purge valve if the results are not as described above.

That was the main reason why I picked the Toyota. The Ford Kuga (Escape where you are) sometimes had problems (only 2 wheel drive) with traction while in the grass or on gravel. Other than that, the Ford had a more solid drive and had a lot more silent engine than the RAV4. Quality wise both cars are about the same I guess. The 2013-2016 EB 2.0 was a Mazda/Ford design, with better reliability and no start/stop button. The 2017-2019 Escape 2.0 is a Ford product with twin-scroll turbo and the stupid start/stop gadget. Unfortunately many of these also have the coolant intrusion issue.

    I have the same car but a 2018 titanium. I just had a new engine put in because of a very nasty leak between the cylinders and coolant chambers at 47k miles. It happens a lot with these escapes. Mostly within warranty, but still. Buyer beware...if your coolant starts to disappear and you get a code for the spark plugs, run to the dealership before that 60k mark. I still love my escape tho...I still drive her everyday. :)

    Trouble is the overwidth tires on many, many new vehicles.. ,beside the ridiculous price, is they cause wind drag. Especially in the Winter.. they tend to push snow rather than cut through it and the extra width means less weight per square inch ... less traction. Not everyone needs Monster truck or Indy car profile tires. My two cents.

    Hi Scotty, I love your video's. They are very informative. I'm curious to know do you ever have any service work for an 08 Acura MDX? The SH-AWD CEL is on. I took it to the Acura dealership for a full diagnosis. They recommended a new rear fuse box/multiplex control unit as well as the fuse and relays as well as the A/C relay because the A/C needs to be manually turned on and off, the power steering feels tight, to be its a rough ride and the front heated seats do not work, nor the headrest dvd monitors that I know are aftermarket installed. This vehicle also has an aftermarket Code Alarm security system that added a remote start. All the aftermarket items were already installed at purchase by previous owners. I was advised by Acura that the multiplex control unit would fix all these issues with the fuses and relays, but while replacing that, they came and told me I needed a new wiring harness that costs $3500 because it has been chewed by rats and needs to be replaced as well. I agreed to do the first job which was about $900 with the diagnosis, but only charged me about $750 since I agreed to have the rear fuse box ordered and installed by Acura. After advising me about needing a new wire harness, Acura completed adding the rear fuse box. Nothing they advised me that would work once the multiplex control unit was installed worked like I expected. I don't understand why Acura didn't find out I needed a new wire harness initially with the full diagnostic as well as when they determined I needed a new multiplex control unit to explain that replacing the multiplex control unit wouldn't fix my issues? Yet, I digress. Does it need to be reprogrammed after the wiring harness installation or when the rear fuse box was installed? The SH-AWD CEL is still on and everything is still not working. Plus the day I drove it home, it was pouring down raining and I believe I got a little shock through the driver seat that wasn't on. 👀💯 Please help me. Since I had the multiplex control unit replaced, I thought the truck would work, but I'm not fortunate to purchase your recommended diagnosis tools, so I'm trusting your many years of knowledge and expertise to help me out. I know this inquiry is loaded, but I truly need your help. I recently purchased this vehicle and the used car lot was willing to pay the repair costs, but like me wondered why Acura didn't find the bad wiring harness when the full diagnosis was originally done, had we both known about it, we could have made different arrangements, but now too much time lapsed. Also, now since the Acura dealership worked on it, the used car dealers say that they don't know if Acura caused the wire harness issues. I don't know what happened, but the truck cranks up fine, the motor and transmission sounds good, it just doesn't have the Je ne sais quoi I know the Acura MDX with SH-AWD should have after driving my 2007 model since 02/2019 that someone hit me and damaged the front quarter panel and frame that totaled it. The 2008 steering wheel feels tight and the car feels heavy and I won't turn on the comfort/sport mode until it's properly repaired because I don't want to mess anything else up. I just need a reliable working vehicle that I don't believe is electrocuting me that everything's working as it should. I thank you for your consideration.
    Best regards,
    An humble UA-cam subscriber
